Hotel-Restaurant Bernerhof — Hotel in Kandersteg

RESTAURANT ONLY - We were extremely disappointed with the way we were treated upon arriving at Restaurant Hotel Bernerhof in Kandersteg. Our group of eight arrived to find the restaurant completely empty, yet we were told we’d have to wait while they “prepared a table” which would have been understandable if it had been busy. Instead, the host made a point of telling us that “normally you’d make a reservation,” in a tone that was unnecessarily condescending and dismissive. What made the experience particularly unpleasant was the host’s attitude. He rolled his eyes, spoke to us in a curt, unfriendly manner, and created a very uncomfortable atmosphere right from the start. We felt unwelcome and judged simply for showing up without a reservation, despite the fact that there were no other guests present at the time.

We understand that larger groups can sometimes pose a challenge, and we’re always happy to wait or be flexible. What we don’t expect, especially in hospitality, is to be treated with rudeness and disrespect. Sadly, the poor reception set a negative tone so we left and went down the road to hotel Alder and had an amazing and welcoming experience, no reservations and no attitude at all. I recently stayed at the Bernerhof Swiss Quality Hotel with a group of five women for my first hiking experience, and it was truly memorable. The hotel, with its charming wood chalet exterior and warmly lit, cosy interiors, created the perfect atmosphere for our mountain getaway.

Our rooms were clean and offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains and nature, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty of Kandersteg. While the bathrooms were somewhat outdated, this is a minor point in an otherwise flawless stay.

The real highlight of the experience was the incredible hospitality. The team was warm, attentive, and truly committed to making sure we had a wonderful time. From the thoughtful table settings at dinner to the beautifully plated dishes, every detail was attended to with care. The staff also made sure we were well-informed about nearby hiking trails, ensuring that we felt both prepared and cared for during our adventure.

We cannot say enough about the wonderful experience we had this August at the Hotel Bernerhof. The hotel enjoys the best location in Kandersteg and our lovely double room had spectacular views of the valley up to the towering peaks of the Doldernhorn and Bluemlisalphorn. The room was scrupulously clean, well appointed and comfortable in typical Swiss style, with a nice en-suite bathroom and plentiful hot water. What makes the hotel truly special are the owners and hosts, Claudia and Gerhard. They take a personal interest in each guest and every day have a different and special way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. We enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast each morning and dinners were truly something special. Every morning and night Claudia changes the decorations and table appointments with flowers, linens, birds and hearts. The food was excellent and artfully presented. The hosts and kitchen were able to accommodate some very stringent dietary concerns with grace and style. We would give Claudia, Gerhard and the Bernerhof 100 stars if we could. We look forward to...
