After a nice day in Bern and on top of Niesen we decided to have dinner at Au Vieux chalet. It was a strange experience.
The meals are expensive compared to similar restaurants in Kandersteg. We ordered a schnitzel which was 25.5 F but we also had to pay another 7 F for the french fries. We thought that this was acceptable as long as it would be a great meal. However, the schnitzels were thin and not crispy and were served without any additional sauce or vegetables (we did get the lemon). Initially, we also got the french fries served without sauce.
The service was strange. One guy was happy and friendly and also gave us the sauce for the fries when we asked for it, but the other guy was not friendly and just served the food on the table and walked away.
There were several guests arriving after us who were told that the restaurant was full; however, this was not the case.
In the end we payed €90 euros for 2 beers 2 schnitzels and 2 portions of french fries. Normally I take pictures of the food to give a good representation, but I was to disappointed to take one. So, for now. Decide for yourself :).
Reading the reviews I see a lot of good ones in the past, And the schnitzels look better then the ones we got. So, hopefully this service was only today.
To end on a positive note. The location is great, with a great view on the mountains and the road where everybody...

This was the worst meal we’ve had in Switzerland.
We came to Au Vieux Chalet expecting a cozy fondue experience. What we got was a nightmare.
Let’s start with the fondue.
The texture was all wrong — thin, runny, and separating into weird oily layers
Instead of a rich cheese flavor, it reeked of alcohol — so strong it overpowered everything
It felt like we were drinking hot white wine with a hint of cheap, rubbery cheese
The smell was sour and off-putting
The bread was dry and hard, cut into tiny pieces like it had been sitting out all day
We each had a few bites and felt sick. Zero comfort, zero flavor, just a nauseating mix of alcohol fumes and old fat.
The waiter made things worse. He kept staring at us — not in a polite way. It was unsettling. No smile, no warmth, just long, uncomfortable eye contact. We couldn’t relax. We felt watched the entire time. Like we were being judged or monitored.
Then the bill came: 61.5 CHF. For one awful fondue and one can of cola. No side dish, no extras, no care. That’s not expensive — it’s exploitative.
No quality, no value, no respect for customers. Avoid this place unless you want to pay premium prices for an upset stomach and a...
Read moreThe food here is good. Friendly and attentive staff, and we had a good time here until we saw the bill. I was at the restaurant with my aged parents and since it was raining and really cold outside, my parents wanted warm water to drink which the restaurant provided in two cups, just plain hot water. But when the bill arrived, they had charged CHF 6.00 for the two ordinary cups of warm water which is ridiculous. I questioned the guy serving us and he said something about electricity to warm the water and then to wash the cups etc .. justifying his stand. And when I insisted that it was just water and that I shouldn’t be charged for it, he said that is the norm here in Switzerland. I've been living in Switzerland for the past twenty years and I know that ordinary water is not charged in restaurants. This not only labels the restaurant as unprofessional but also blaming that on Switzerland ( a wonderful country with high standards and professionalism) is completely absurd . This level of ineptitude and the slight attitude with which he argued was not charming or pleasant. So even though the food was good, the behaviour of the staff left a bad...
