Where do I begin to describe the drive up the hill upon a grand adorable surprise! We did not imagine our boutique Dar La Menara would be a gem resting on the top of a hill… as the meaning for the property, truly a sunrise and sunset beacon upon Sidi Bou Said, Tunis, and The Mediterranean Ocean.
It was as though the staff were patiently awaiting our arrival, big smiles and wide open arms as Samir, Wiem, and Zainab greeted us.
Quickly we met Karim, completing the front line team, explaining the Dar, the amenities, and our glorious room. This was the end of our 16 day educational trip on Tunisia, its culture and rich history of Islam and how Tunis was and continues to be the leader in helping Africa shine bright!
Breakfast was simply adorable, just as perfect as the hotel. Every morning you are greeted with those same true smiles from Samir, Wiem, and Zainab. You have so many options to sit just about anywhere to enjoy the skyline views while you have your coffee, tea, juice, and breakfast. Whether the room, the breakfast solarium, or down by the heavenly swimming pool. Eventually you will find Mohammad running around with the other staff ensuring everything is in tip top condition!!! And of course, the chief Murad is working hard to make sure everything is business as usual, will always make time for good conversation, and just like his team, he has plenty of valuable information to share about Tunis.
Must not forget to mention the amenities… the cleanliness is so comforting after a busy trip and many hot temperature days! The housekeeping staff such as Taouse always around to ensure your room was quickly tidied up within a blink of an eye, she is so quick and amazing!
The local bus, and train are barely 7 minutes walking distance from the property. The transit system is old… but it works, it’s adorably affordable, and the passengers are all helpful to ensure you are going in the right direction!
I recommend the dining at the bottom of the hill surrounding Mosque Al-Ghufra, or out towards the train station. Shopping, go see George for souvenirs next to the big grocery store. And don’t forget to meet Najeeba across the grocery store that has an amazing laundry service.
You are in Sidi Bou Said to see the old town… it’s gorgeous… there’s opportunity to take marvellous pictures everywhere, especially at the very top by the lighthouse and the back of the cemetery that leads to the very top of the hill fur breathtaking views!!
Take a stroll or two through the old madina for endless photo opportunities. If you feel like treating yourself… try haggling the vendors for souvenirs that you’ll probably find with George down the other side of the hill! Dare to dine in the old madina but be weary of the exuberant prices, especially at Café des Délices (Café Sidi Chabaane)… the staff are not honest, and the manager Abdulla is not interested in addressing the endless negative reviews about his cafe.
Take a quick train ride for half a dinar to La Mersa for more glorious views of the Mediterranean!!! However, you’ll need to bring your own supplies for the beach as there are no vendors providing beach chairs, umbrellas, and there are no amenities.
Find your way back into the middle of La Mersa and just a block away from the train station is Cafe Les Arcades for simple mint tea, coffee, soda, and shisha… all for 20 dinars including tip! The best shisha I have ever had, hands down, super sweet staff Mohammad and Sherrif!!
You will never go wrong with making Dar La Menara a part of your visit to Tunisia. We received tremendous love and warm good byes from all the staff as though it was our own family wishing us safe travels back home, and reminding us to consider future trips to Tunisia to visit them 🙏
Thank you to all the wonderful and beautiful people at La...

Read moreGreat, little boutique hotel located in the Sidi Bou Said area of Tunis. ||We stayed in the Syracuse room, located on the ground level by the pool. The room was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. ||The location of the hotel is up a pretty steep hill probably a 15 minute walk from the main town area. We had a car, and there is plenty of free parking directly in front of the hotel. Speaking of... there is also plenty of street parking in the town as well -- though it is a 2 Dinar charge/hour. ||We had dinner in the hotel in the evening, they had a pretty decent variety of Italian food offerings, and the pizzas we ordered hit the spot. The included breakfast the next morning was a small buffet, and could have used a few more bread/pastry options.||The only negative for us was that the music by the pool plays till around 10pm. Luckily, we didn't have too early of a flight the next morning, but if we did, we imagine it would be quite difficult to sleep with the music going. Something to keep in mind if you book a room on the ground floor (the Taormina or the Syracuse Room)||Overall, great stay and we will be back if we find ourselves...
