I am compelled to write this review to share the appalling experience my partner and I endured at the Bath Spa Hotel, which disgracefully claims to be a 5-star establishment. Our stay, meant to be a celebratory retreat in honor of our birthdays and 36th wedding anniversary, turned into a nightmare that I would not wish upon anyone. From the moment we stepped into room 111, we were horrified by the state of the accommodations. The paintwork was not just neglected; it was in a state of shocking decay, as though the room had been abandoned and left to deteriorate for years. The walls and surfaces were scarred with deep scratches, giving the unsettling impression that the room had been through some sort of prolonged mistreatment or abuse. The carpet, far from offering the comfort one would expect, was a revolting tapestry of yellow stains—so repulsive that it made walking barefoot feel like a health hazard. The bathroom was beyond revolting; it was a cesspit of filth. The fixtures were stained with nauseating yellow marks that seemed to have been ignored for an extended period. The very thought of touching anything in that bathroom was enough to induce a sense of dread. The toilet, shower, and sink were all coated in a layer of grime that made using them feel like an exercise in self-contamination. We were left with no choice but to limit our contact with the bathroom as much as possible, resorting to basic hygiene measures only out of absolute necessity. To make matters worse, the air in the room was thick with the stench of mold—an odor so overpowering that it was difficult to breathe without feeling physically ill. Upon closer inspection, we discovered black mold infesting the window frames, an unforgivable oversight that poses serious health risks. This is not merely an issue of poor maintenance; it is a glaring safety hazard that should disqualify the room from being occupied at all. Our dismay extended to the dining experience, which was equally abysmal. At breakfast, we were greeted not with the elegance of a 5-star meal, but with the indignity of paper towels in place of proper napkins. Even the most basic condiments, such as pepper, salt, and sugar, were conspicuously absent, adding insult to injury. It felt as though the hotel was doing everything possible to cut corners, at the expense of guest satisfaction and comfort. Despite raising these serious concerns with the receptionist, we were met with a response that can only be described as apathetic. Our complaints were ignored, leaving us to endure this horrific experience without any attempt at resolution. The lack of accountability and customer care was as shocking as the state of the hotel itself. In summary, our stay at Bath Spa Hotel was not just disappointing—it was a complete disaster. The gross disrepair, filth, and utter neglect of basic standards make it clear that this hotel is unfit for any guest, let alone one claiming a 5-star status. I strongly advise anyone considering a stay here to rethink their decision, as our experience was nothing short of traumatic. We will never return to this disgraceful establishment and would warn others to avoid it at all costs. It is baffling that Bath Spa Hotel continues to operate under the pretense of being a luxury destination when it is, in reality, a health hazard and a far cry from even the most basic of accommodations.

I’m giving this hotel four stars, with the one star lost due to the disappointing quality of the breakfasts, afternoon tea, and dinner. That said, I will be booking a future stay - this time opting for the room and spa only, and skipping meals in the on-site restaurant. The spa was lovely, we enjoyed a couples massage and facial, we both left feeling amazing! What really stood out throughout our stay was the staff. Every single person we dealt with was warm, welcoming, and went above and beyond to help. I’d especially like to commend Gaelle on the front desk, and both Nam and Adam in the restaurant, whose patience and kindness made a huge difference to our experience. The staff are a big part of why this review is four stars rather than three. This was an impromptu two-night package break (check-in 26th August, check-out 28th), which included breakfast both mornings, afternoon tea on the second day, and dinner on the first night. Dinner: On our first night we had the steak with blackberry jus and the pumpkin risotto. Both dishes looked appealing but fell flat on flavour. I had requested my steak rare, but was told that because the steaks were cooked sous-vide in advance, this wasn’t possible. It's something I’d expect better flexibility on in a hotel of this calibre. The following night, when dinner wasn’t included, we ordered from a local restaurant for less than half the price of the meal the previous night (even accouning for drinks), with generous portions and far superior flavour. For future stays, I’d recommend treating yourself to local restaurants in Bath. Breakfast: On the first morning I ordered Eggs Royale, and on the second, avocado toast (I’ve attached a photo — it speaks for itself). My partner had the full English both mornings, and the quality was disappointing; we’ve genuinely had far better at our local greasy spoon. Afternoon Tea: Visually underwhelming, with sandwiches that were soggy, scones that tasted a little stale, and cakes that seemed mass-produced. Once again, the staff saved the experience with their attentive service. Constructive feedback for the restaurant: 1) Re-evaluate the food offering; the pricing and quality do not match up, even accounting for being a five-star hotel restaurant. 2) Extend breakfast hours until midday. This is a spa resort, and guests understandably might want to sleep in. There were queues out the door by 8:30am on a Thursday... 3) Hire more staff for the breakfast service. Nam, Adam and their colleagues all did a phenomenal job despite being stretched thin - seating, serving, and clearing tables simultaneously. Their positivity was truly commendable. Other notes for future guests: 1) The building is older, so expect some wear and tear. A little updating without losing the character of the site would do wonders. The room we stayed in was a double. It was spotless, comfortable and spacious. 2) Spa robes run small. We were provided with larger ones upon request (thank you to Gaelle, and the cleaner who brought them up), but even these were snug. If you’re a larger person like us, I recommend bringing your own bath robe for comfort - we will next time. 3) Surcharges apply to some of the meals, so worth bearing that in mind if you’re booking a package that includes them.

We recently visited the Macdonald Bath Spa in Bath for a day spa experience and would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Spa manager and reception team, who were genuinely interested in addressing the issues we encountered. However, despite their attentiveness, several aspects of our visit left much to be desired. Firstly, the outdoor pool’s temperature should be clearly stated on the website, especially noting that it might not be suitable for people with certain health conditions. This lack of information can lead to uncomfortable and potentially hazardous situations for guests. Our experience with ordering snacks was particularly disappointing. Despite being asked about allergies the day before our visit, there was no follow-up regarding my query, leaving us unsure about the safety of the food offered. Additionally, when my husband ordered something to be enjoyed by the pool, the staff initially approved but later informed us that it wasn’t authorized, making us feel like we were at fault. Clear communication about rules and available options is essential for a good customer experience. Payment issues further marred our visit. Due to a poor internet connection, our cards couldn’t process payment initially. Later, when we arrived at the snack bar, a staff member rudely declared that our card had been declined twice, which was both inaccurate and humiliating. This was not the level of professionalism we expected. We had booked lunch for 2 pm, but no one approached us until 2:30 pm. When we requested to sit outside, we were warned about seagulls in a rather off-putting manner, though no seagulls were present during our meal. The overall delay and lack of attention were frustrating, although, in the end, the transaction processed without issue. The internet connection throughout our visit was poor, significantly impacting our experience. It was my birthday, and I had hoped to stay connected, but the signal was terrible and no reliable WiFi was available. Additionally, we were not informed beforehand that phones were not allowed in certain areas of the spa. This should have been communicated prior to our visit, as it affected our ability to stay connected and capture moments from the day. Moreover, finding the hotel was challenging due to incorrect location details on Google Maps, compounded by the weak signal. This added unnecessary stress to our arrival. Despite mentioning my birthday multiple times, the hotel did nothing to make the occasion special. While we did not expect anything extravagant, any gesture would have been appreciated. Instead, we had to continually follow up, which dampened the celebratory mood. In summary, while the spa facilities were decent, the overall experience, particularly the snack service, fell short of our expectations. It seemed that the focus was more on serving members rather than providing excellent service to one-time visitors. The Macdonald Bath Spa has the potential to offer a wonderful experience, but significant improvements are needed in communication, service, and connectivity to truly meet guest expectations.

BEWARE. The Hotel's response is completely false. They either have me confused with another guest or are just lying. Nice try management. No damages during my stay. We feel scammed. We experienced many obstacles that a 5 star hotel should never allow a guest to experience. The hotel is gorgeous and the grounds were stunning. The decor is very well done. Unfortunately the rest did not live up to the initial impression. The USB port in the room did not work and a maintenance person finally came to the room and determined it just didn't work and they provided us with a converter chord to plug into the outlet as work around. While the maintenance person was there I asked how to turn on the towel warmer as it wasn't seeming to work - he said, "the towel warmers in half the rooms have been deactivated. The iron leaked and got my garment all wet. The blow dryer has a, "safety feature" that makes the guest think it just doesn't work. I called the front desk and the attendant told me, "just push the button". I asked, "the cold shot button" she said, "no the button". She had to come up to my room to show me how to operate this ridiculous blow dryer and in fact while you are holding the blow dryer - it won't work unless you constantly hold down the cold shot button. This also means that the cold shot is not available because it is used as the, "on button". No instructions in the room but plenty of promotional literature asking you to donate to the MacDonald family's favorite charity and selling their spa products. Loose the promotional material and worry more about the money that the guest is ALREADY spending. The window was old and was stuck open and I had to really work to close it. The window had an old scrapped up sticker saying, "caution". Remove the warning and fix the window. The bar downstairs with the gorgeous horse paintings was beautiful but unfortunately understocked. I first ordered a martini. No olives the bartender said. The choice (all from the provided menu) was a margarita. They didn't have those ingredients either. Ok howabout the tattinger cuve also on the menu - did not have that either. We ordered breakfast the night before to be delivered to the room the next morning. Mind you this is 26 pounds per and an additional 10 pounds charge for the room service tray. A hotel of this caliber should have a room service trolly to roll into the room not a tray that they had to move our stuff from off the table to place this room service tray on the only free table top in the room. The breakfast was just shameful and the coffee was like barley coffee flavored water. So I tried to use the plastic nescaffe machine in the room only to find 3 pods of decaffeinated and only 1 regular. I called the front desk and asked if the same chef who made the breakfast also made the food for the dining room and she said yes. That was very unfortunate because we were planning on staying at the hotel that day to get our spa services and then dine in the lovely dining room. I could not reward this chef for a horrible breakfast and I was not going to trust this kitchen for 1 more meal. The day we were checking out there was some sort of wedding expo that was setting up right in the hotel guest common areas. We had to walk around that and couldn't help but notice just another thing the hotel owners were profiting from and not giving the guests the experience they were charging for. Get a management team that knows what a 5 star hotel should be. Get a maintenance team to provide resolutions not excuses. Seriously re examine your kitchen team. Have the owners stay in the rooms to actually understand the guest experience that their name is taking credit for. The staff was aware of all of our issues and nothing. I would suggest a traveler to bath stay closer into town considering this hotel experience did not justify the...

Only reason for the 2 stars is the location and the rooms were pretty decent. However that is where it ends with positive. There was a wedding happening and after it had finished they all.congragated in the courtyard where our room window was and they were there cheering and laughing and talking soo loud I window was shut and even then we could still hear them and it was 230am, I had contacted reception 3 times about this and to remove them from the courtyard where all rooms were instead dis nothing. So had the worst sleep. Then I went reception next day to complain and the reception staff seem very amateur and untrained in how to deal with these situations, so I just told her to forget it and asked for a toothbrush as I left mine, however I was shocked that they wanted to charge me £4.50 for a toothbrush, is this not a 5 star hotel? Even holiday Inn give toothbrush kit for free, then not only that they didn't have any at reception and told me they will send someone to the room with the toothbrush kit, waited for 2 hours and nothing, I tried calling reception but it seems no one wants to answer the phone. So I gave up and went into the city and did our tourist usual and bought a toothbrush in the city for £1.75 madness right? Then going back on final night we went to the bar waited 15min, at this point the 4 other people that came before us gave up and left, until someone finally came and didn't even acknowledge that we was waiting for so long or even apologised, I just went straight to him and said when you get a chance can we get 2 beers. We then waited again another 6 min until he came back and then gave us our drinks. We didn't bother going back after 1 beer as we didn't want to wait 30mim just for a drink. Then we ordered breakfast for the next morning, upon it arriving it had to be the worst breakfast I've ever witnessed. The food was cold firstly, 1 sausage 1 bacon and 1 toast for £26?!? My partner ordered gluten free toast, to which they gave normal toast and she almost ate until.i noticed it wasn't gluten free as she has intolerance to this, not only that they didn't give any tea cups , sugar, milk with the tea pot, were we meant to drink from the teapot ? The fruit salad we also ordered half was missing and seems as if they were just squished into the jar and just seem gross to look at. We called twice for the tea cups and sugar etc , they came and just brought tea cups and forgot the gluten free bread and the sugar and milk. We just gave up as by this time the food was just gross and cold. We complained upon checking out and once again it seems the summer hiring was all students and don't have any training in dealing with complaints as she then said she will get someone from the kitchen to come speak to us and I said we don't have time we need to leave and also we will tell them the same thing we just told you, what do you expect them to do about it? This was reception job to understand the complaint and refund us our breakfast which by the way I do not recommend £26 per person was ridiculous for what we were given.

If this hotel wants to improve its rating, when hiring maybe provide training upon how to handle situations, how to be attentive, ensure someone is always at the bar and they acknowledge customers waiting, sort your breakfast out, the portions are ridiculous for what we pay, also the spa needs to have time slots as when we went there was such an influx of people in there it was like sardines in a can, the pool was soo full we couldn't swim, thr outdoor pool was soo full we just stayed in the corner, the sauna was full and steam room so maybe best to do time slots. This was in no way a 5 star hotel, the service and the quality of food and spa was that of a...

If you go in expecting The Grand Budapest Hotel, you’ll probably end up feeling like you stayed in a budget youth hostel with chandeliers.

Before anything, I do want to mention that the staff were friendly and polite throughout. They were doing their jobs the way they’ve been trained and this review is not about them personally, but about the overall standard of service and management compared to the price charged. The issue is not with effort, but with how little luxury or structure there seems to be behind the scenes.

I stayed at this establishment for two nights with my boyfriend, while the property and location are beautiful (about a 15-20 minute walk from the main city centre), the overall experience was far from what i would expect from a 5 star hotel.

To start with, we reached the hotel on a Friday evening and there was no doorman at the entrance. None. Not even a bellboy wandering about. The main door looked like it had survived the Roman Baths era - heavy, outdated, and needing a heroic shove to open. Another guest had to help me with it, which felt more like checking into a student hostel than a luxury hotel.

At the reception, there was no one at the front desk when we arrived, and we had to wait around five minutes before an employee went to fetch someone from the back. The reception area didn’t give any luxurious or 5-star feel rather more like a standard Holiday Inn (which honestly offers a warmer welcome). Their card machine wasn’t working properly which accepted AMEX, and the other one didn’t connect to Internet, which I found surprising for a hotel of this calibre in the UK.

We were told our room was in a separate building at the back of the main one, and again, no one helped us with our bags, they did ask but my boyfriend declined🤦🏻‍♀️ the signage was confusing, and it genuinely felt like we were walking in the wrong direction at times. When we finally reached our building and in the lift, the placard outside proudly said the room was on the first floor yet our room was actually on the second. So after pressing all the wrong buttons and dragging our luggage around like lost tourists, we finally found it. Outside our door were dirty dishes and were there for our entire stay.

The room itself was large and clean, and so was the toilet and bathroom but the details were all wrong no phone to call reception, no plug points near the bed, no welcome note, no warmth. At that point, I started to think Il Duce himself ran this place unbothered, and allergic to customer comfort.

The bar experience was also disappointing. The barman had a temperament somewhere between Gordon Ramsay and a traffic warden on double duty. he literally drank leftover mixer of my cocktail in front of me! When certain drinks weren’t available, he’d suggest alternatives, but if we declined, he’d get visibly irritated. On our last night, he got upset and raised his voice at another guest loud enough to turn every head in the room which was quite uncomfortable. The barman in general was a good person but the service was not.

Breakfast was another letdown. It wasn’t a buffet, which was fine, but for £16 per person, the food quality and variety were poor. The vegan breakfast was especially bad with one rubbery sausage and bland beans.. The pastries, lentil patty and hash brown were the only redeeming items.

I have lived in India for most part of my life before moving to the UK and have stayed in 5 stars there and worldwide and this was nowhere close to that standard. The location and building might look the part, but everything else felt like a poorly managed hostel rather than a...
