We booked a stay at the hotel which included the meals here, the on-site restaurant was the weakest part of our stay. While the hotel and spa were excellent, the breakfasts, afternoon tea, and dinner fell far short of expectations for a five-star hotel.
Dinner On our first night we had the steak with blackberry jus and the pumpkin risotto. Both dishes looked appealing but were bland and lacked depth of flavour. I had requested my steak rare, but was told that because the steaks were cooked sous-vide in advance, this wasn’t possible, disappointing for a restaurant in a five star hotel. Our meal also included a side, a starter, two cocktails and a dessert. In total the bill came to around £150.
The following night, when dinner wasn’t included, we ordered from a local Bath restaurant for less than half the price (even accounting for drinks); the quality and flavour were far superior.
Breakfast On the first morning I ordered eggs royale, and on the second morning, avocado toast (photo attached — it speaks for itself). My partner had the full english both mornings, and the quality was very poor; we’ve genuinely had far better at our local greasy spoon.
Afternoon Tea This was visually underwhelming, with soggy sandwiches, slightly stale scones, and cakes that seemed mass-produced.
Staff The service, was excellent, but it's clear they are understaffed. Nam and Adam were absolutely wonderful throughout, doing their best under pressure while stretched thin covering seating, serving, and clearing tables all at once. Their smiles, patience, and kindness helped redeem the experience. They were easily the highlight of the restaurant.
Constructive feedback for the restaurant:
Re-evaluate the food offering; the pricing and quality don’t currently match up - especially given the five-star hotel setting.
Extend breakfast service until midday. The restaurant is part of a spa resort I don't think it's outrageous to suggest guests might want to sleep in. At 8:30am on a Thursday, there were queues out the door.
Hire more staff for breakfast service. The team did their best but were visibly overstretched. Nam and Adam in particular deserve recognition for their professionalism and...
Read moreAt the end of last year, my friend and I reserved a table to have lunch at the Vellore last weekend, and we had a very bad experience.
Firstly, we were told that they didn't have our reservation, despite receiving an email from OpenTable that same morning to remind us of the booking, to which I responded to say we would be coming!
Then the waiter told us that the reservation we had made was for a special offer from Christmas time, which was no longer valid. We booked the table at the time (Nov/Dec) with the special offer in place, so we don't know how this would be possible.
We then had well over an hour's wait from our original table reservation time of 14:30 to get our food. There were only 4 people in the whole restaurant: us and a couple sat next to us, who we understood were on a spa & lunch day, but we thought it was a bit inappropriate for them to be allowed to have lunch wearing bathrobes at a 5-star hotel.
When the food eventually arrived at 15:50, a chicken Caesar salad and fish and chips, the 'chicken' in the salad was dry, hard, and crispy and more like bacon. It was really not good.
All in all, we found the waiter to be quite 'off' with us throughout the time we were there. In the end, however, he did give us a discount to reflect the reservation mix-up.
It's such a pity, as I organized a client gala dinner here many years ago and had been very impressed at the time, but this was a very disappointing experience from start to finish. It was supposed to be a fine dining experience for us, but there wasn't even a hint of fine dining about it, and it seems the hotel has gone downhill since I was first there.
I do not usually like to write bad reviews, but sadly, I will not be returning or recommending it again...
Read moreWent along to this restaurant as we were staying in the hotel for Valentines day. While the hotel and spa were gorgeous, the same cannot be said for the restaurant.
We went for the valentines meal for two, which was £85 for two glasses of bubbly, 3 small cold canapes each, one steak shared between the two of us (which was cooked to the chef's preference), an incredibly overcooked small lobster, a portion of chips each, and 2 small chocolates each.
I had a Peroni and my girlfriend had a glass of the house white, and to our surprise the final bill was £120.
I don't have an issue with high prices, so long as I feel that I'm getting quality food with good service. Unfortunately, we often felt forgotten and it took a huge amount of time between courses to bring the next course.
The room was nice, but the atmosphere was somewhat brought down by the long wait times, and hearing other people complaining about their food to the waitstaff.
I would stay in the hotel again, but frankly I wouldn't touch this restaurant with a 10 foot pole, especially as there are so many gorgeous restaurants in Bath that are less than half the price. The Uber from the hotel would literally pay for itself and you'd have a far nicer...
