So glad I booked this hotel at the last minute as it was the perfect location for my meeting. When I was pointed to the basement, I said to myself, “oh no”. But on seeing the bright, spacious, well appointed and comfortable room I was pleasantly released. Gorgeous ibig bed, bedside angle poise lights, heavy drinking tumblers and a bottle of water were great. The bathroom was well stocked with eco-friendly body-care products sans SLS and paraben were a nice touch. The fixtures and fittings in both the bedroom and bathroom were excellent. There was a card on the table which said the hotel is big on sustainability snd so am I. How thoughtful to provide good quality coffee, camomile tea and oat milk on the tea tray. And the tea is from a factory powered by solar energy! And just what I needed for a creased linen dress, an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe! My vegan breakfast was lush, great ingredients and so much I couldn’t finish everything. The Continental was lovely, watermelon and pineapple slices (mind the air miles), plant milk and plant milk yogurt, delicious banana smoothie. A bargain but the only thing missing was a cafetière of filtered coffee rather than machine coffee. Lovely stay. One night stay but would definitely return for eco-luxe!

The George hotel isn’t some five-star giant, but honestly, it’s better-think cosy English boutique inn done right. The rooms have that proper modern British style, crisp linens, and a bed so comfy you genuinely don’t want to get up. Mine overlooked the road, yet it was dead quiet-no traffic hum at all at night, Everything you need’s there: coffee machine, kettle, hairdryer, safe, even a proper iron that beats half the ones in luxury places. Front desk leaves out fresh fruit and lemon water every day-little touches like that add up. Breakfast is flexible-continental or full hot spread. I just ordered shakshuka; it was restaurant-level good, not hotel-generic. And yeah, the coffee machine in the lounge is free all day. Cleaning crew’s quick and quiet; we’d come back and the room would already be perfect. Everyone’s friendly. I nearly booked via Booking.com, but the site promised upgrades for direct bookings, so I did. Got the hotel’s biggest room and checkout pushed to 1pm. Ads everywhere remind you to skip the middleman-I see why; places like this need direct support to stay afloat. Worth it.

Can’t praise the staff enough, location was exactly where we wanted to be. The hotel as whole was clean decorated in a heritage style fitting with the area, we had 2 rooms, both room plan and decoration different yet stylish, with tv, large wardrobe with room for your luggage and a selection of books to read In the bathroom was towels (very soft and fluffy), shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion and hand soap all made from natural ingredients of good quality. Refreshments in room large bottle of water, tea, coffee (including decaf) milk, oat milk and both white and brown sugar. There’s a pantry (tuck shop) available for sweet treats, snacks and even phone chargers should you have forgotten yours. We had a cooked breakfast which was excellent and freshly squeezed orange juice. The continental breakfast had a wide range of foods to choose from. Although there’s only breakfast available we booked a table at the suggested near by Tavern which was again first class all round.

Upon arrival I was informed that I owed an extra £15 for the children’s bed, despite the fact that there was no mention of this on my email booking. When I questioned this it was brushed away as a standard charge and was in my email somewhere etc. This felt like an underhand charge and unnecessarily greedy when I was already paying over £300 for a one nights stay. This was later explained as an error and the amount refunded but not before I had questioned it with the manager. As other have mentioned, there is a general hands off attitude with the service here. There is often no staff around at all, with no bar and often no one on reception. The manager on check out was also serving breakfast and the only one on the dining room floor. So the limited staff present were also spread too thinly across other areas.||The rooms are nicely decorated but the corridors are painted in very dark colours and dimly lit. Breakfast is in an attractive basement but has limited offerings on the continental side. Most annoyingly, guests were just advised to sit where they want and so this resulted in parties of 2 taking tables of 4 and 6, meaning the 3 of us almost had to put up with a table for 2 until we found 2 next to one another and pushed them together . Completely ridiculous and another example of a fairly hands off attitude permeating through the hotel.||Our large room was asthetically pleasing although the carpet had seen better days with holes and pulls in various places. The bathroom was large and attractive but we soon discovered that the showerhead needed attention as the large showerhead dripped cold water the whole time the small showerhead was in use making a very unpleasant shower experience. Also the toilet brush was just in an open pot, no lid, so you could see that it wasn’t very clean etc. Very odd and unnecessary.||The child’s bed, that I had been charged extra for, was a very small basic camp bed and was only just big enough for my small 12 year old. So I would be very careful about booking this for anyone much bigger or older. Our bed was two single beds pushed together and very uncomfortable.||On top of this, there was a strange mechanical type noise sounding in the room at intervals through the night which kept us all awake. It sounded as though it was from above the bathroom, I would suggest you definitely investigate this as I’m sure we won’t be the only ones to complain. ||I’m afraid we’d booked the George as a bit of a treat and it did not live up to our expectations. In light of the issues I have raised above, alongside the problem with the overcharge, I did request that as a measure of goodwill we were not charged the £6 for a drink I ordered but we were charged this anyway. When we checked out someone else was complaining and getting a refund.||Extortionate amount to pay for the experience and service we received and we definitely won’t...

Reasonable quality hotel but overpriced. Breakfast was nice. There was a problem at the time of booking with the website. When I tried to book it took me to an error page saying ‘page not found’ and I then booked again and was successful and received a confirmation page with booking reference. Unfortunately unbeknownst to me I had accidentally typed in my email incorrectly the first time and so didn’t realise that despite the error message, the booking had been successful, had I had the confirmation page as I should have had, for a successful reservation, I would have realised my error with the email address when no email arrived to confirm the booking. I only noticed this when I realised I had been charged for the double booking on my credit bill, no one picked up on it in the hotel before or during my check in and stay. Despite being able to show evidence of the problem with the website with screenshots and photos of a WhatsApp conversation between a friend and myself who had exactly the same issue at the same time I have been told that I ‘clicked back’ to get the error page and that the confirmation screen did display the first time (it didn’t). The fact that two intelligent women very used to making hotel reservations etc had exactly the same issue at the same time with the same error pages and the same double booking and have evidence to prove the issues is no coincidence. Yes I typed in the incorrect email but the webpage was not working correctly which I have been able to demonstrate but still no acknowledgement or apology for their mistake just excuses, blame on me and a fight to get back my money. I have been issued a refund but it has been a huge battle and as I say, no apology and not even a phone call from the manager despite repeated requests and promises made by staff that I would get a call back more than once. Be careful as they are not helpful or fair. I have been asking for a telephone call with the manager regarding this for 24 hours now and no one has called. It seems once they have your money, legitimately or not, they will not refund. I notice from the reviews that others have also had issues with unauthorised payments being taken and not refunded. DO NOT BOOK HERE they are not...

Absolute rip-off (Google does not have option for zero stars which would be the appropriate rating for this hotel). DO NOT rely on the pictures posted on their website. The rooms are nothing like what you see on the website. The entire place needs some serious renovation. The rooms are dark and dirty, paint is peeling from the walls, carpets in hallways are ripped and plumbing is in disrepair. There are no furnishings in the rooms - no place to put anything, no drawers, shelves, etc. Only small nigh stand, small table with a coffee maker, couple of hangers and a small safe bolted to the floor so you have to crawl on your knees to get to it. You basically need to live out of your suitcase or leave stuff on the floor while at this hotel. The hotel is located in the city center in walking distance to several nice restaurants. Given its central location, it is understandable that the hotel has a rather limited parking. We were fortunate to get a spot right in front. That is where the good things ended for us. Unfortunately, there is no elevator and the stairways are very steep and narrow. No assistance with luggage was offered or available when we were checking in. After dragging the luggage ono the upper floor, I decided to take a shower. The shower valve was broken and there was no way to adjust the temperature. Fortunately, it was set to a relatively warm and acceptable temperature. Couple of minutes in, the the hotel manager was banging on the door, yelling that I needed to stop showering immediately because water was leaking into the room below us. After relocating into another room on a lower floor I noticed a large stain on the ceiling, likely from a prior leak from the room above). Fortunately, we did not experience any leaks from above during our brief stay. Another broken shower valve, this time the temp control was working, but could not switch between rain and handheld. No big deal, but it paints a rather bleak picture of the overall maintenance of the hotel. Bottom line, DO NOT stay at this hotel if you can book...
