Is there a better location for a hotel in Edinburgh?
The Rutland Hotel can be found at the western end of the main shopping street, Princes Street, the Johnnie Walker Experience is across the road, The Scotch Whisky Experience is nearby, as are the bars and restaurants on Rose Street for eating and drinking. Trams and buses stop just around the corner, from where you can reach the home of Scottish rugby at Murrayfield Stadium…and then there is Edinburgh Castle, which you can see from the hotel, and in fact from the room that we stayed in!
Checking in was quick and easy so we were soon in the lift up to our Castle View bedroom, and it did not disappoint.
The castle view room, of course, comes with a view of the castle, and also looks along Princes Street towards Calton Hill.
Apart from this spectacular castle view, what else is in the room? everything you expect – WiFi, a TV, a full hospitality tray including a Nespresso machine, a fridge stocked with drinks. There was also an assortment of liqueurs and cocktail-making equipment, robes, slippers, ghd hairdryer and straighteners, a safe and a radio.
The ensuite had an impressive-sized bath and rainfall shower, plenty of Arran Aromatics toiletries, an illuminated mirror, underfloor heating, and a heated towel rail to warm up those fluffy towels.
For food and drink, there are a variety of options in the same building. Kyloe Restaurant and Grill is mostly about steak with certified, dry-aged Scottish beef their speciality. If you want to continue your castle and Princes Street views then we recommend booking a table as the restaurant is a popular choice.
After a night of partying, or in our case trying to get some long-exposure pics of the castle, breakfast was the next item on our agenda.
We were almost stumped on what to order with a wide-ranging menu including classics such as Eggs Benedict – available three ways, with Brioche French toast, a traditional full breakfast etc.
Huxley’s hash: picante N’duja, fried baby potatoes, pico de gallo, poached free-range eggs, and chimichurri. We also ordered a full Scottish for me as I can’t resist a potato scone, served alongside Hardiesmill beef sausage, pork link, back bacon, haggis, black pudding, tomato, mushroom, potato scone, granary toast and a free range egg your way. This was a hearty breakfast that set me up for a day of...

Location: At the west end of Princes Street, and tucked away from the bustle. Perfect location for exploring the city and wider area.
Facilities: We stayed in a junior suite which was beautiful. A nice view of the Castle with a comfy bed and a sitting area. Our room had tea/coffee plus a fridge for drinks. The bathroom was ideal with a hydro bath and a great shower. The toilet was in an adjoining room (within the suite) which is ideal so.....well, you know. Robes & slippers were included and the welcome chocolates greatly appreciated. Loads of storage space for your purchases. Top quality GHD hair straighteners & dryer plus iron + board, basically EVERYTHING.
Staff: All incredibly friendly and professional. We had an issue with the room safe which was sorted out in seconds. Queries about storing luggage before arrival were answered quickly. We had a bonus and were able to check in early for no cost, which was really appreciated after an early (and grotty) train journey. Perfect - thank you to Jan & Stacey esp.
Dining: Exceptional breakfast in the downstairs restaurant, 'Huxley' with very friendly service. As a resident, you have your own key, so you don't need to leave the building to access it. It has its own page, but I highly recommend the experience and food here. It was popular with non-residents too, which is always a good sign. The steak restaurant on the upper floor, 'Kyloe' was awesome too, but will do a separate review.
We loved it here and will definitely stay again. The hotel was quiet and would suit a couple looking for a short break or a larger family group in the apartments, which are luxurious and a first class home-from-home. Staying at The Rutland made our Edinburgh City break a 5* experience; it's a wonderful city and The Rutland...
Read moreWe stayed in an executive double for 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary and my partners birthday. Check in was smooth, staff were lovely and welcoming. Hotel is in an excellent location, parking was about 5/10min walk and half price with hotel. We were on the 3rd floor which the lift didn't reach and reception told us it was only a few steps to the 3rd floor, it was actually a flight of stairs and then what we would call "a few steps" not great when you're an overpacker like me but it is what it is. The room was lovely, clean, except the used piece of dental floss that was stuck to a towel, and the fact the wifi didn't work in the room for the first 24hours rendering the tv apps useless and having to waste our data to listen to music and watch tv. The radio did connect via bluetooth which was a nice touch. We had booked the Rutland for some chill child free time and had expected to spend more time in the room however the lack of wifi did hinder this. We cannot recommend the Huxley and Kyloe enough, definate value for money and an all round great experience. The mini fridge ws stocked nicley however it did create heat in the cupboard it was in which resulted in melted tea cakes that were provided. Upon check out we found there were some cleaning works being done on the only exit to the building, and were told by reception "Oh you might just get your feet a bit wet" Not really ideal when these are slippy steps dry and having to carry our luggage down the wet stairs was not very 4 / 5 star. Overall, I feel like the stay was not worth the money, We would return if we got a good deal however full price we did not feel was worth it. There are definately better hotels for the price we paid, whilst we acknowldge we were paying for location also, we feel that we could pay less for more...
