As you walk into the Celtic Royal you're met with the lobby which is two floors high and is graced with a beautiful light arrangement. A grand carved staircase takes you to the first floor, where are the stair to the upper floors? When we were there a few days ago the guests lift was out of order. Luckily we were on the first floor albeit as far along the floor as you could get. Our first room overlooked the venting system from what I guess was the kitchen. We moved to a slightly smaller room where we stayed. The Celtic Royal (CR) has a strange system of light switches, they are all on one panel by the door. So if you need the loo during the night, and don't want to put the bedside light on you need to follow this routine 1 Find the light switch panel by the door. Find the right switch and turn it on Go to the loo. Don't forget to wash your hands. Now the fan kicks in. Go back to the switch panel by the door and turn the switch off Return to bed and wait for the drone of the fan to stop. Then find your partner needs the loo and start all over again! Why can't they have a switch by the bathroom? The hallways are decorated in a half and half style with a candy pink and cream paper on the top half. Looks good. The brass work could do with a polish, we obviously missed it. Imagining it done would have been lovely. There's a restaurant and a more relaxed bar for food. The food we had on our first night was fantastic! However, on our return the following night it was not. So much so I was refunded the price of my meal. I'd opted for a vegetable stir fry with steamed rice. The rice was cooked perfectly. I wish I could say the same of the stir fry part, it was awful. Luckily, Asda is over the road and saved us that night. Breakfast were excellent the usual variety of self service hot food. Tea, coffee and toast is brought to your table. There was also an excellent range of food in the continental breakfast. The pool, steam and sauna are free to residents. Towels are good quality and are available for free however don't forget your £1 for your locker. We found the whole area of the pool and spa to be clean and well maintained. The staff were brilliant and couldn't do more to help. I think some of the staff must have wheels on their feet they move so fast. Just a last niggle staff chewing gum, especially on the front desk, it looks awful. Yes, I know they work long hours for probably basic pay and few breaks. Either don't eat gum or learn to chew it with your mouth shut. Would I recommend the...
Read moreThere is many good things about Celtic Royal Hotel based on my visit - but once again many bad things. Starting with the good things, the area is amazing, and there is many things to do and explore in the town. The reception/lobby area is brilliant. There are rooms available to walk in at any time (one with books, the other with a piano to use and TV!) to lounge in, and order coffee and/or tea. Don't get me started on the reception desk - the staff are brilliant, kind and extremely helpful, and will definitely point you in the right direction. The room was okay for the price, though there was a small TV, the bathroom tap pressure was unappealing, and there was little to no ventilation in the bathroom - so imagine what it was like to go after someone uses the toilet! The house-keeping service was brilliant. We ordered two extra pillows for everyone, and upon arrival they were already in the room for us. The food in the restaurant was brilliant, and so were the servers and waiters. Interestingly, the bar was the complete opposite. The next day we was told to have our dinner in the bar due to the restaurant being fully hooked. Once we arrived, we was sat at the table and waited 15-20 minutes, just for someone to tell us to go and order at the bar. After this, we waited another 15 minutes for the food and drinks, and the waiter ended up slamming the plates and cups on the table, almost braking them. This upset us, but we couldn't show them. After that, we quickly ate and left. Beware: if you get the bed, breakfast and dinner plan, the breakfast is all inclusive and it is pretty much an all you can eat, whereas dinner is up to a limit of £32.50, and because of this, none of us could get a starter. The pool was over chlorinated and caused my wife to walk around with a swollen face. Also, it is called a leisure centre - not swimming training centre, but when me and my family went to enjoy the pool serivce, we couldn't use half due to children being taught to swim. No one mentioned that this was taking place and it definitely caught us of guard. The cherry on top is that there was a £5 charge for 'renting' a lock to lock the lockers. Once again no one told us this, and therefore we didn't bring any cash or card down to the pool. Due to that we had to use the lockers at our own risk and worry the whole time if someone was going to take something. In my opinion, this is extremely stupid to charge a fee to use a lock. Overall, my stay there was decent and I would recommend it to other, but ensure they stay...
Read moreI am frequent traveller who has experience many hotels in different parts of the world and this one isn't a good one.
First the Room, I paid £187 for one night excluding breakfast, the room was swelteringly hot and it was only 21 degrees in the day outside. There is no Aircon in the room at all and I had to explicitly ask for a fan which granted was delivered quickly but it's not acceptable for the price. The rooms are dated, the bathroom looks like something you couldn't give away for free on Facebook. This hotel claims to be a Spa hotel, it's not. I've got an IPAD larger than the TV I'm not sure how relaxing eye strain is.
The fitness centre is not 24 hour access so you have to fit into their strange timings, to the point where I didn't even bother using it, it looks ok to average on face value.
The parking is a nightmare, you're basically parking at the top of Snowdon in the tiny spaces on steep Inclines, if you aren't a confident driver, good luck...
Most of the clients seem to be coach holiday types of an age which is all good. Unfortunately there was a large number of tourists when I was there speaking in German who were arrogant in how they navigated areas, walking taking up whole corridors and speaking at an excessive volume at inappropriate times.
The breakfast is confusing you have to book a time for no apparent reason as it's a buffet style breakfast. You walk in past the buffet breakfast area but it's not clear that you first need to be seated so you have to walk further down and then get a seat. You're not told anything you're just asked if you'd like basic tea or coffee as there is no self serve machine then you have to make the assumption yourself that the buffet is help yourself. You get a tray and loads up what was a fairly comprehensive breakfast and was of ok quality certainly not the best but passable and better than a travel lodge etc. when you get your tray back to your table there is nowhere to put it, they have the tables set out for a full 3 course dining experience so you have to faff about moving pointless cutlery just to be able to eat, short sighted and incomprehensibly ridiculous. They seems to have about 6 people working the breakfast area too, lots of doers and no thinkers.
To conclude, this isn't a spa hotel, the price I paid was excessive for the quality of the hotel. I would suggest the 3 star rating is too high, 2 stars would be more appropriate. Would I return? Nah, I'd just book in to the nearest Holiday Inn and run outside...
