I have just returned from a weekend visit to the Fairfield House Hotel and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The hotel is in a great location by the sea with a reasonable sized car park. As a guest you get use of the gym, swimming pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna. The changing rooms are small but adequate and you are provided with a towel and use of the lockers. The pool wasn't busy in the mornings and set me up for a nice breakfast after a leisurely bob around in the water.
The staff were AMAZING, and that extended to all staff from reception, the bar/restaurant, the facilities and the housekeeping staff. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful, fitting us in for dinner, giving extra coffees for the room, answering any queries etc. Really nice people.
The breakfast is hearty! You have a choice of a full Scottish breakfast, with a vegetarian option available, or eggs benedict or a couple of other options. On top of that there is a lovely selection of continental breakfast foods, pastries, croissants, fruit, yoghurt, cereals, cheese and ham (the ham was delicious!) Plus your usual tea, coffee, toast etc. with a little selection of jams, honey, Nutella as well. I couldn't eat all of mine and my partner happily ate half of my cooked breakfast too - but that's my fault because I was so happy to have ham and cheese that I overdone that before the breakfast! So I'd recommend eat breakfast first then tuck into the continental if you fancy it. The scrambled egg on my breakfast was fantastic, really tasty and nicely cooked. The second day I had the eggs benedict, which came on a crossiant and not your typical muffin, it had 2 poached eggs and again was a bit too much for me but I enjoyed it all the same.
We had an evening meal in the restaurant and it was delicious! Lovely combination of flavours. I chose the duck with fondant potatoes and my partner had the sea bass with truffle and brie mash - we followed this with a caramel cheesecake with hazelnut ice cream (which was beautiful!) and my partner had the 5 cheese plate which came with oatcakes, grapes, celery and chutney. I haven't had such a nice, flavoursome, meal in ages and I really enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it so much that I have recommend this to friends and family already.
There were some areas where improvements could be made or that were a slight downside and I am going to mention them to give an all round picture of the hotel and facilities - however, I want to really point out that this did not affect my enjoyment of the trip at all.
So, firstly, the car park is also for non-guests using the gym facilities and as such it was quite busy. There is on street parking as well though so not the biggest issue. On our first night the Ayrshire jazz club were in the function room below our room - and they were VERY loud. Unfortunately I can't stand jazz, but if you like jazz this may have been a welcome bonus lol. Luckily enough the event was on late so didn't affect my enjoyment of the trip. Our room was on the second floor and you could see that there had been water ingress. There was evidence of water staining and dampness on the walls and the room looked like it needed the carpet cleaned and a fresh lock of paint. The bed was also very firm. Did this affect my stay? No, not at all, but for £125 per night on a B&B basis off peak I would have expected a slightly more luxurious room. Room facilities were a little odd - we had lovely little shower products etc, but only 1 plastic cup for rinsing after toothbrushing. I prefer not to share a rinse cup so I would have liked 2 cups. The coffee cups were made of paper, I don't know if this is a post covid step but again, one paper cup each for a few cups of coffee wasn't ideal. The tea/coffee etc looked like it was only for 1 person ( 1 biscuit, 1 spoon, etc) so I don't know if maybe I was accidentally allocated a room for 1 person. Again, didn't affect my trip but its just a nice little touch that was sort of missing. Hence 4*s and not 5.
Overall I will definitely be back, I enjoyed and...
Read moreBoth my friend & I have mobility issues, which we clearly informed the hotel of beforehand, more than once. We both have spinal issues and my friend has also just recovered from successful hip surgery. The room we were told was best for us (No 55) must've been the furthest away from the reception, pool & restaurant! Thankfully there was a lift, but there were also lots of heavy fire doors in between. Not easy when one needs crutches to walk, and the other uses a stick. Our bathroom had a walk-in shower which in itself was fine, but NO grab rails in the shower or bathroom to hold on to. The toiletries provided were lovely. Another major issue was that the 2 beds appeared to be on wheels. My friend stumbled getting up, the bed moved away, causing her to fall onto the floor. Due to our mobility issues, it was quite awkward getting her back up again, plus she'd hurt her knee & back too. Our room was quite warm, and we were extremely grateful for the fan provided and the right hand window that opened. The left hand window had been nailed shut, with the nails very clearly showing. We were also concerned with health & safety in the case of a fire. For two disabled people, this room was extremely unsuitable. The actual decor was OK in itself, although we felt a bit like we'd been stuck in the attic. The room felt oppressive as there wasn't much daylight got in, due to the sloped ceilings. Both our beds dipped in the middle, giving us an uncomfortable 2 nts sleep. The lamps, and walls behind them, were quite dusty. The bathroom only had one small glass shelf. They could've done with another shelf as there was literally nowhere to keep our toiletry bags, meaning you had to put the toilet seat down and use that instead. Taking them in & out each time with you. Being an older building, there seemed to be a lot of doors banging, and floors constantly creaking. The floors creaked loudly even from the room next door! We were B+B. Our orders were quite mixed up on the first morning plus no-one explained about the cereal/toast/cold drinks area. We were only asked if we'd like tea or coffee and that was it. It wasn't immediately noticeable due to room dividers. It would make sense to seat 'less able' clientele closer to that area, since it can be quite tedius when you only have one free hand to carry things! Second morning we were served by a very cheerful & friendly lady this time, although still weren't told about the cereal/toast area. We'd worked that out for ourselves from the previous day. (top marks to the chef for my extra mushrooms!) The disabled parking wasn't great. Only ONE space, and numerous blue badge holders, making it a hit or miss whenever you returned. Being a RAD customer, and living locally, this stay was a treat for my friends birthday. She'd travelled down from Glasgow. Having stayed in quite a few of the RAD hotels, I felt this one let us down. It's listed as a 4* hotel. I felt it was more 2* B+B. Considering I've had stays in other RAD hotels, and also Seamill Hydro (definetely a 4* hotel) and far superior, for less than I paid for this stay, we felt quite let down, and disappointed. It put a damper on what should've been a celebration. There needs to be some 'proper' accessible rooms for less able customers. I'm not sure how a wheelchair user would cope in this hotel, which is quite sad, as the location is really good. The staff (esp Nicola on reception) are indeed an asset & a credit to the RAD Group. I do think an overview on accessibility needs to be done to encourage older/less able (I'm 58) clientele to return. Otherwise we'd just stay in Travelodges, which are perfectly accessible and much...
Read moreUpgraded to Executive room when booking for an extra £20 as this was the only rooms available according to reception. Allocated Room 38 which didn't have a key to the door. Eventually the key situation was resolved by giving us the master key from housekeeping who had informed us the lock had been changed just before arrival and the maintenance person hadn't handed the keys to reception. Immediately unimpressed by the room at first glance. No hotel welcome booklet or any information on room details etc. Quickly scanned the hotel website to check room descriptions and ours looked exactly like the one advertised for a basic classic room going by the picture being advertised. Asked house keeping what this room was classed as but they said they didnt know because ‘Rad’ had just taken over (assuming this meant the Radison chain group have bought over the business). Asked reception to clarify room and they said it was definitely an ‘executive’. Room carpet needs a thorough deep clean as its very dirty, walls marked all over and needs refreshed, the window looks directly onto a stone wall with no view, one window frame is actually ‘screwed’ shut with a random metal screw through the pvc. Bed frame ledge was thick with dust, mirror, radiators also thick with dust and behind the pelmet curtains another layer of dust you could run your finger along and retrieve thick layer. Looked to have only been cleaned at eye level. Bedding clean but marked. Bathroom was at least clean and acceptable and looked like it had been refreshed recently no issue here. Good shower. Dinner was ok nothing special and didn't have any scallops or duck available from set menu which limited options. Breakfast was positive and good quality and service from staff on breakfast shift also really good. Halls and corridors to the room extremely grubby looking and needs attention. Would not return which is a shame because a...
