This is potentially an absolute gem of a hotel, but under its current ownership and management, realising that potential looks a dim and distant prospect indeed. It sells itself as an AA 4 star hotel but this is anything but a 4 star hotel and it really shouldn't be marketed as such. The decor is showing its age and there's an air of scruffiness throughout what should be a beautiful property. Maintenance is so bad that the catch on our bedroom window was broken so the window didn't shut properly, leaving us with a nasty draft. Staff didn't seem either interested or empowered to deal with it, either; they seemed friendly enough but generally exuded an air of being demotivated and exhibited signs of being undertrained. Don't expect to see a welcoming guest brochure in your room either; there isn't one. The TV signal is patchy, seemingly fed by a faulty Freesat attachment. The swimming pool and gym are currently totally out of action, the hair salon looks like a ghost ship and yet inexplicably they still advertise themselves as a Country Club hotel. The snooker table is badly torn and stair carpets are badly worn in parts. All of this just serves to underline the general air of decline and decay that prevails throughout. The room itself was clean and well-presented but the bed was quite small and really not the most comfortable. The ensuite was fine enough but the mirror over the sink was wonky and there was no bulb in the mirror lamp unit. The shower was good and powerful but it's a bit of a mountaineering job getting in and out of the bath tub. Temperature control for the shower seemed to carry between very hot and scalding; the tap simply wouldn't turn towards cold even when we tried. Breakfast is OK, but it's not up to a 4 star standard, and is served in a dark internal room, with restricted menu options, and on my second morning there, the sausage wasn't even properly cooked. I didn't bother complaining because by this point I just wanted to get out of there. It's such a shame, because all that's needed is a bit of tasteful redecoration, staff training, business savvy and proper investment and remarketing and this could and should be one of Moray's most prestigious hotels. We won't be back.

The gentleman at the front desk was friendly. Our shower was broken and partially removed with a piece of plumbing sticking up and leaning over with a handwritten sign not to try to use it. The bathroom floor felt unsafe in this area, as though it may give way. There was a tub/ shower on the opposite wall. The full tester bed was gorgeous, although the my husband felt the mattress was a bit worn and lumpy (that could simply indicate a feather topper). I would have toned down some of the red, especially in the crushed velvet of the sofa., but it is still a beautiful room. The first floor architecture was beautiful but unfortunately the furniture arrangement made it overcrowded, as it seemed set up ( probably trying to promote personal conversation groupings) made the flow awkward and overcrowded. Some of the furnishings did not compliment well with the historical period. The ‘leather’ sofas were worn in a very bad way. The center foyer table should be moved to a different area and the tablecloth and artificial flowers removed. (I left that out of the pictures.) This building exterior is absolutely beautiful!!! The restaurant within the hotel was closed at the time of our visit. They have a large billiard room and size of the space in each room make this property a good choice for groups! This BEAUTIFUL property has great potential, but is somewhat of a work in progress! The new owner just put on a new roof and is making repairs (such as the bath) as quickly as possible!

I think the coolest thing about this place is the history. I know the charm of this place is in the fact that it can take you back, but there are certain areas that need to he updated. There were multiple areas in the room where the walls were peeling. If this issue is happening in multiple areas, this should be taken care of ASAP because it makes the room look like it isn't being taken care of. I can honestly say this was the worst sleep we have ever had in a hotel. When we walked in I noticed the bed looking a little lumpy, but assumed it was the covers making it look off. Later in the evening when we finally settled in for the night, we realized how bad this mattress needed to be swapped. The springs poked my back and there were serious indents of where others have slept. My husband and I woke up several times throughout the night, & around 5 am, decided to turn on the TV and wait for breakfast to be served. We let the reception know about this when they asked about our stay, and they were apologetic. I just think that this should've been taken care of a long time ago. I don't think the condition of this mattress should've ever gotten to this stage. It was literally SO LUMPY AND OLD! The staff were super nice and the area was great, plus breakfast was pretty nice. The rooms are in need of some serious TLC

Stayed for two nights.|Pulling into car park the sign says Mansion house hotel and Country club 🤣.||Beautiful looking building blue sky I thought this is lovely, ugly housing estate around the driveway which could be planted up so it’s shielded from this hotel.||Upon arriving the carpet is grubby and seams bursting open the whole length, tripping hazard, just peel the carpet away and show the wooden floor boards as shown in an old photo on the wall much better. Both open fires wasn’t lit this would have been so nice to see, also very musty smell.||We found the miserable reception area and receptionist wasn’t much happier no details offered about the building, no hello just looked up and said “Name” was given key to room 4, told where to go didn’t offer us a nice stay or any conversation.||Got inside the room big old furniture what you would expect with the building but a massive tv on a modern Glass unit. Very weird choice then saw the carpet was filthy. The armchair only chair in the room was badly stained. Windows filthy and the headboard was badly stained. We only unpacked upon seeing a very clean bed and bathroom.||Leaving the hotel I spoke with the happy reception guy again and said if the breakfast wasn’t any good in the morning we want a refund for our second night and will be leaving to go elsewhere, he didn’t seem bothered and gave us a website to express our feelings. We emailed but no one has a acknowledged us so far 4 days now ||We went down for breakfast |and was greeted by a really lovely lady called Lyndsey she was so lovely, breakfast was ok very hot but bacon was dry and cheap sausage.||We decided to stay for our second night and went to see reception but he doesn’t start until 2.30pm we were told.||Went out for the day got back about 4pm and I ran the bath stone cold, my partner went down to reception as no phones in the bedrooms, he came up and offered us another room went to look at room 7 carpet filthy and free standing shower with a massive pipe out of the floor not connected.||Water came back on so we decided to stay in room 4 had our breakfast the next morning lovely young lad served us no one else in the hotel. So we left and put our key on the empty reception desk||All in all for £311.00 it was a total rip off and wouldn’t bother staying there ever again. Needs a lot of money spent on it, so to charge these prices out of season, is a rip off.||Also walked around the back of the hotel to find an empty swimming pool full off rubbish, mattresses and tools. Also a fully equipped gym with all treadmills etc just locked up and out of service to use.||Don’t bother staying in...

The hotel was booked in person prior to our stay. When we arrived we were put in the lodge rather than the main hotel. Initially when we asked to be moved the manager argued with us that we had asked for the lodge and that this had been confirmed to us by phone call from the hotel. Neither of these was the case. We had actually asked for a walk in shower and had been told that this was available within the main building which turned out not to be the case. Nevertheless we were given a room in the main hotel which was fine. |Sign in the room suggested there was no dinner available yet there were people eating in the restaurant in the evening with no option to book dinner offered at check in.|The shower ran cold. There was a flow control on the wall that said ‘do not touch’ but with little alternative we did turn the hot flow which fixed the shower temperature but the control itself then proceeded to drip on the floor overnight. We managed to fix this next morning.|We asked for glasses, ice and water to be brought to our room in the morning and this was done with some face pulling and reluctance from a young female member of staff. |Breakfast staff were great albeit we didn’t get our toast and observed one other guest having to ask for theirs twice.|On checkout we had asked for a late checkout. When we went to the desk to checkout there was no staff member but a sign asking to wait a few minutes. We did this, then rang the bell and asked a domestic staff member for assistance who disappeared and returned 10 minutes later with no one. She agreed we should leave the key and go. We had been due to pay £30 extra for the late checkout of 2.5 hours which we agreed to. We couldn’t pay this as no staff however our bank account was later charged 1 pence for some reason!|We are disappointed with some of the aspects of our stay and in particular as this was actually our wedding weekend which the hotel was aware of. Not even a complimentary bottle of water...
