On arrival we were seated in the front area of the restaurant which from previous experience doesn’t get well served from the waiting staff. we ordered drinks and starter and main course altogether and made specific requirements that one of us had a food allergy and did not want the chips but asked them to be swapped over for a sweet potato mash. We also asked for the jalapeño crème fraîche not to be served with the sweet potato mash.
All food came together and the steak that was asked for specific requirements came with skinny fries and a side of sweet potato with the crème fraîche on. I explained to the waiter that I have not ordered it this way round and asked for the chips to be swapped out for the sweet potato. which they just picked it up and carried it off no apology. Eventually the sweet potato came at this point my steak was cold and just slammed on the table no apologies again for getting it wrong or for asking if I wanted my steak heating up or anything like that. When you are paying £28 for a steak and small portion of chips from a restaurant that is offering quality food I would expect more service from the waiters. The food itself was okay my complaint is with awaiting staff the only one that showed any attentiveness was the young lady but sadly not our waiter.. Nobody came over during the meal to ask if it was okay, or if we required anything else or any more drinks. We had to ask for more drinks. We ordered dessert which was fine nothing special and then ask for the bill and I had to go to the counter to pay the bill no conversation from the staff at all really poor. I appreciate if they’ve been there all day by the end of the day they are tired but maybe you should give them shorter shifts or a little bit of staff training on how to deal with customers. I run a business where we deal with a customer base and if my staff came across to my customers like yours did I would have to send them on some serious staff training. I also find it strange in these times nobody asked if we had specific dietary requirements on ordering or even offered to take us through the menu on the different items on there would you would expect in a better in restaurant. I also agree with one of your previous customer reviews which you have not responded to Mr Paul Ainsworth Lord about the mandatory service charge that you put on the bill and agree that because we’re British we don’t ask for it to be removed I also never questioned that you had charged me for the sweet potato which was swapped out for the chips and I still got charged a side order for it for 12 1/2% service charge for the service given I think he’s substandard...

Incredible menu. Haven't seen Orin Swift in York since I've been here (a year now). A dirty Martini with the owners vodka phenomenal. A glass of Pinotage, so lovely. If you haven't had a Pinotage please don't dismiss South Africa's competitor to a Cabernet. So much more better per cost.
Smoked salmon, beautiful presentation but I would have liked a little more creme fresh and pickles. I loved the pickled carrots tho, and the rye bread accutermonts were incredible. Bread is so different in the UK. The sprinkling of cavior was a nice touch. So delightful.
The steak... Well my first reaction was "they didn't season it", which may be a Chef's choice. You can always add your own salt and pepper. But I did have an initial reaction of "Ohh...". The char was lacking, clearly cooked in an oven and not grilled. Maybe a broiler. A Texan might turn up their nose. However it was perfectly cooked. And the broccoli side dish was without criticism. Absolutely delicious!
Overall one of the finest dining experiences I've had in York. Honestly the next closest experiences has been in Dublin and that's a bit far to go for dinner. So, I cannot overstate the dining pleasure that The Whippet Inn delivers. It's what we all need - dare I say weekly. What else are we working our assess off for if not for an evening being catered to and dining on some of the finestly prepared foods that money can buy. Michelin you...
Read moreVery underwhelmed by today's Sunday lunch here after reading so many amazing reviews. Lovely decor and atmosphere very much let down by mediocre food. The roast beef was sinewy and chewy in parts. We had a 12pm booking so being one of the first served, I'd have expected piping hot fresh food. The veg was all luke warm and the cauliflower cheese was quite dry with hardly any sauce. It was all tasty but lukewarm and just a big let down. The Yorkshire puddings were however amazing and probably the best I've ever had, really light and fluffy, even though weren't hot either. Sticky toffee pudding was great. My partner had booked it for my birthday and I didn't like to make a fuss and bring it to the attention of staff for his sake so in fairness, I didn't give staff a chance to rectify it whilst I was there but I was expecting so much more from one of the supposedly best places to eat in York. Surely getting a roast dinner right isn't that hard for somewhere so highly rated. The table next to us had the chicken and they didn't look to impressed either, it looked dry and they were struggling to cut it, they left their cauliflower cheese too. Infact, thinking about it, everybody in the room looked pretty underwhelmed, I certainly didn't hear anybody getting excited or raving about their food. Maybe we were unlucky and caught them on a bad day? Didn't live up to the hype for me...
