Well maintained park with ruins of saint Mary's abbey in it and also York museum and another building called the hospitium which is sometimes used for weddings and craft fairs,as well as a small astronomy observatory which has been open to the public on on occasion. There are several entrances to the park, one on lendal an another on at Mary's with others next to to the river, though these can be locked when the river is in flood. The gardens are a good spot any time of year to sit and watch the squirrels though some areas do get muddy. Open all year round apart from new year's day, there is a coffee kiosk near the entrance at lendal and occasionally a bird of prey stand there. dogs are to be kept on a lead at all times and drinking alcohol is not permitted although at the moment there is a thors tipi tent bar there for Christmas.

Lovely gardens on the banks of the river Ouse. Very idyllic on a summer's day and very relaxing just wandering around or lazing about on the grass. The ruins of St Mary' Abbey are situated within the gardens as are Roman ruins, and there are Roman sarcophogi scattered about the grounds, some now being used as flower and herb planters. Fascinating place, history lying about your feet, and if you want more, the York Garden Museum is right there to. There's also a lovely old building called the Hospitium dating back to the 12th century. So go for a wander through history in beautiful botanical York Gardens, as with all of York, you won't want to leave.

Vibrant and luscious garden surrounding an elegant museum! When the plants are dewy and damp, and the sunlight hits them in the early morning, the effect is absolutely otherworldly. I came here in the soft slanting sunlight before a long day of adventuring throughout York. I believe that this place should be experienced in such a way: as a calm and nourishing interlude between exhilarating and wild chapters of life, whether other parts of a trip, or simply the chaos of the everyday world. The life force of spring seems to flow through all of these damp and shining plants, from two laps to daffodils to even elegant sakura trees.

Lovely park as a whole, however they close it off at 6pm so getting from town centre to our hotel was a massive pain as they seemed to have "guards" letting people through, but not us 🤷🏻♂️ seemed only locals were being let through. Also the area around we had to walk on was flooded, not great but overall the park itself is really nice and scenic Edit a year on: visited again exactly a year after this review was posted and is also when I took these photos, exactly the same issues with shutting at 6pm and flooding. Still remains a really nice place

Been here a few times in the last few weeks. Really easy to get to, giving you a lovely park to walk around and visit some local history (with St. Leonard’s Hospital, Multangular Tower, York Observatory & St Mary’s Abbey in the gardens). This is definitely a place I’d like to visit in all the seasons to see the changes they make. There are a lot of cute squirrels around (hunting for food when I’ve been), as well as other wildlife/nature so I have been practicing with my camera. Plenty of room if your trying to social distance.
