Situated in the heart of the city and in a prime location on St Helen’s Square, York’s Mansion House is undoubtedly one of York’s finest buildings and is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York. I was invited to attend one of their guided tours, which have been adapted in light of the current situation. The tours started again on the 22nd July with smaller group sizes and hand sanitising stations are in every room for you to use as much as you like, guests are also asked to wear a face covering throughout the duration of the tour. The slight modifications and the steps that have been put into place didn’t at all detract from the fantastic experience of our guided tour.
In the entrance we met with our tour guide who was very informative about the history of the house and she had a wealth of knowledge about Mayoral life in York. Home to York’s Lord Mayor for 800 years, our tour started by following our guide up the sweeping staircase to see all four floors of the building. From the beautiful State Room to the perfectly restored 18th century kitchen, which was my favourite room of the house and definitely one of the highlights of the tour, every room is rich in history and has a story to tell.
With each tour lasting 45 minutes it was certainly a very enjoyable visit. They have a large assortment of paintings, silver, glassware and furniture, holding one of the largest collections of civic plates in England, outside of London.
The house is actually still a home to the Lord Mayor of York and is very much the beating heart of this vibrant city. Also if you’re lucky enough to live in York, you will receive 50% off admission prices. I’d definitely recommend...
Read moreA surprise in the city centre. Very closed to Betty's I never thought this was a house people could visit. They've been open for only two years and it's not advertised as other attractions. The staff was very friendly. My daughter did a gingerbread trail and she got a nice gift at the end. Spread on 3 floors, this mansion is beautiful. The kitchen has a big table where kids can play an interactive game cooking old recipes. Someone from the staff also showed us how to cook a gingerbread recipe from Georgian days. Some rooms need a little more improvement I think (being a little bare) . Second floor is a grandious state room with dressing up available for both kids and adults. Third floor has a silver gallery where children can use crayons to print coins designs. It took us over a hour to visit. Some visitors had a tablet with them with a voice explaining the rooms. It wasn't offered to us for some reason. The entrance price is reasonable with discount for...
