My husband and I were already planning a trip to York and were wondering where we could go for food. After much deliberation, we saw that reviews looked good for Miller & Carter, so we decided to go for it!
We booked our table for 6pm which gave us plenty of time beforehand to have a walk around the shops, squeeze in a trip to York Dungeon, and work up an appetite. We were immediately greeted by a lovely member of staff who showed us to our table and informed us that our waiter would be Joshua. The restaurant was very clean with tables nicely spaced out, giving us the privacy we wanted while we ate, and the decor was quite sophisticated (reminiscent of Hawksmoor) with the occasional piece of American steakhouse-style decor dotted here and there.
After a few minutes, Joshua came over and he was absolutely lovely from start to finish. As we were first-timers, he kindly explained the menu for us and nothing was too much to ask. We also had a great chat with him about where he's originally from in the USA, and had a laugh about the variety of British accents too. He is a credit to the team at M&C, so before I continue, please remember to give him some praise!
We ordered some drinks, which came within minutes, and ordered our main courses, opting to miss out on a starter so we could enjoy a dessert without being too full. I ordered the 8oz fillet steak (rare) with thick cut chips and beef dripping gravy, while my husband ordered the Black Angus 8oz ribeye (medium well) with Camembert mashed potatoes and bone barrow bearnaise, and we shared a brisket/short rib mac n' cheese. Our steaks also came with an "onion loaf," which was like a slightly more refined version of the typical onion rings you tend to get with steak, and I loved mine so much I also stole my husband's (he doesn't like onions)! Everything was spot on. My steak was cooked to perfection, very juicy and easy to cut through - I didn't even need my steak knife! Easily one of the best I've ever had. Adam's steak was perfectly cooked too, and he particularly loved the mashed potatoes, while we both thought the mac n' cheese was fabulous.
When it came time to decide on a dessert, I was quite full so I picked the smaller option of a miniature dessert that comes with a coffee. I chose caramel profiteroles, which came with berries and chocolate sauce, and a latte, and my husband ordered the full size chocolate brownie, which came with ice cream and a chocolate straw, and a double espresso. Both coffees also came with a scrummy biscuit too! The brownie was fabulous, it was dark and moreish without being overly rich, and it didn't make you feel horrendously full like most chocolate desserts do. The profiteroles were also delicious and certainly deserving of being made a full size dessert option!
All in all, we had a brilliant time eating wonderful food, and it was the perfect end to a great day. We look forward to...
Read moreI dined at Miller & Carter York yesterday and had an exceptional experience that I feel compelled to share.
Service: First and foremost, the service was outstanding. I accidentally booked a table for 3:30pm instead of 5:30pm, yet the team managed to find us a table on a busy racing Saturday. Their accommodating nature truly made our evening special.
Kid’s Menu: The kid’s menu is wonderful—great quality and definitely value for money! The portion of the starter is the same size as adult's, It was a nice touch that they offered it without me having to ask, especially since I had my son with me.
Professionalism: The staff struck the perfect balance between being attentive and non-intrusive. I appreciated their willingness to check with the bartenders about which cocktails had lower alcohol content to suit my preference. They were patient and approached us only when we needed assistance.
Product Knowledge: Usually, I order my steaks medium rare, but the server recommended a better option based on their unique doneness ratings, which enhanced our dining experience.
Food Quality: While the food was of great quality, it was slightly less flavourful than I expected. However, it still met my overall expectations.
Tipping Flexibility: I also appreciated the option to tip based on the service received, which is a refreshing change from many other establishments in York that impose a fixed service charge regardless of the experience.
Restroom Accessibility: The only downside was the restroom's distance, requiring a trek down many steps and a long corridor. Improving accessibility here could enhance the overall experience.
Overall, I’m thrilled to see the transformation of the former Post Office into such a wonderful restaurant. I will definitely be returning soon! Highly...
Read moreWe booked to visit miller and carter on a Saturday evening for my daughter’s birthday so expected it to be busy which wasn’t a problem. The restaurant itself looks very sleek, cosy, dark and moody which is what we were after. We started with drinks at the bar which were lovely. The restaurant was wonderful in the fact our table was booked for a time but one of our party was delayed due to issues trying to park. We had not anticipated how hard it was to find parking on a weekend evening. Our fault completely but the restaurant were really great and held our table until they arrived which was much appreciated. Our host was lovely and couldn’t do more for us which was fab however the food itself did not represent the prices we were paying. We booked the restaurant on the reviews of others claiming to be the best steak house in York yet I don’t think we could agree. The food was okay at best but at £30-£40+ for the steak dishes, we expected more. Maybe we haven’t caught up with the times of our expectations for the money paid but for instance our son had the kids fish fingers: his allergies restricted what he could have, he received one small piece of fish and some chips. Extra to pay if you wanted veg or anything to go with it which I just thought for £15 just felt ridiculous. Again this is just our opinions. Our daughter had the kids steak: steak cooked okay but bland and fries very much overcooked. The Mac and cheese tasted floury which was a shame. The Camembert mash was delicious. I don’t know if it was because the evening was so busy but the food did not match the reviews. Overall it was okay. I most likely won’t go back simply feel it was overpriced for what we got in my opinion. Again this is just our experience and hopefully you will...
