We stayed for 2 nights in this beautiful new hotel in Richmond. The hotel was brilliantly located just 5 mins walk from Richmond Train station and maybe 10 mins max to the riverside down in amongst the action in Richmond. The building is a beautiful old Townhouse and it’s been done out really lovely with a refined elegant style. The room was a good size and very comfortable and everything is of a very high standard - from beautiful toiletries, the finish of the bathroom, the cleanliness and the top notch coffee machine and pods. The bed was comfy too. Only minor criticism was that the aircon didn’t seem all that effective so we had to have the window open into the road which was quite busy. This is a minor quibble though and didn’t affect the quality and enjoyment of our stay. A final nod to the excellent breakfast - overnight oats, beautiful (and massive) pastries, fruit, yoghurt and continental spread as well as the option to order hot dishes cooked to order. The staff were charming and friendly too. Hard to fault and very reasonably priced too. Thanks so much to the whole team!

During my travels through London, I have experienced numerous accommodations, and I must commend the Selwyn Hotel for making a truly remarkable impression. The atmosphere was exceptionally warm and welcoming, a perfect respite following our journey from the States. The comfort of the beds significantly enhanced our first night's stay. Located in Richmond, the hotel was an ideal base for exploring local sites. The staff consistently extended a warm welcome, making our visit even more enjoyable. The manager personally ensured that we were well cared for, further exemplifying the hotel's commitment to outstanding guest service. Each staff member we encountered was both friendly and professional. I am eagerly looking forward to my next visit to London, during which I intend to return to the Selwyn Hotel. This stay was a standout experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking exceptional hospitality.

The Good: ✓ Nice location and attractive property ✓ Friendly reception staff (especially the Italian gentleman on afternoon shift) ✓ First day's breakfast was excellent ✓ Eventually accommodated our request for adjacent rooms

The Not-So-Good: × CLEANLINESS was the biggest issue - rooms poorly maintained, trash not collected, sheets not changed. This alone significantly impacted our rating × Temperature control problems - A/C locked at very low temperature caused one family member to get sick (though fixed after complaining) × Family room surprisingly compact (typical of older British hotels) × Second day's breakfast was problematic:

Chef no-show Basic items missing 30 minutes after opening Breakfast supervisor was unprofessional and confrontational × Check-in confusion with attempted double-charging despite Booking.com prepayment × Missing basic 4-star amenities (no fridge, no tissues) × Poor pre-arrival room planning despite advance requests

Advice for Future Guests:

Verify your payment status before arrival Bring basic amenities Request room temperature adjustment immediately if needed Be prepared for smaller rooms if traveling with family Note that breakfast quality varies significantly day-to-day While reception staff are helpful, you may need to be proactive about any special requests

Value for Money: Below expectations for a 4-star hotel in 2024. While the property has potential and some staff members provide excellent service, fundamental issues with cleanliness and inconsistent service significantly impact...

My experience was somewhat mixed. I initially encountered some issues with my room, including cleanliness concerns with hair and bugs on the floor. When I requested a room change due to these issues, I was informed that there were no available rooms in my room category, which was disappointing. Instead, room service was requested and I had to wait outside until the floor was clean.

One of the main reasons I decided to switch rooms, however, was because the door in my initial room wouldn't lock properly. This was a security concern for me, and I felt it was essential to have a secure room. Fortunately, I was moved to a normal-sized room from my tight initial one, which was an improvement.

On the positive side, the staff at the Paisley Room, where I likely had breakfast, were outstanding. They were courteous and very helpful, which made for a pleasant start to my mornings during my stay.

It's worth noting that the hotel had recently added an elevator, but it was out of commission during my visit, which was a bit inconvenient.

In summary, while my stay at The Selwyn had its ups and downs, the friendly and helpful staff at the Paisley Room stood out as a highlight of my experience. The hotel could improve by addressing room cleanliness issues and ensuring the functionality of locks on doors to provide a more comfortable and secure...

Quite simply….. overpriced!!! My wife and I stayed for the night last night in a closet/laundry room/ broom cupboard which they called a cabin room, cant see why as the cabin on a Boeing 747 flying overhead was bigger…. By the way dont look at the pictures on the website as they are not a true reflection ( the photo of a typical cabin room didn’t show that the wall to the shower room is nine inches from the end of the bed with a huge tv on the same wall meaning only shaggy from scooby doo could squeeze past)(the picture also shows a desk and chair when in reality there is not even room for , and isn’t , a stool to sit on !!!! had the nerve to charge £140 for the pleasure plus £30 to park the car plus £20 ….yes £20 each for breakfast which consisted of ….. basically….. eggs. However……….you had a fantastic choice of how you wanted your eggs …….poached, scrambled , fried , soft boiled or omelet. Never had so many ways offered to do my eggs for £20. People who mark up this hotel as 5/5 can’t have traveled very much. I have recently stayed in hotels in London, Cheltenham and bath and honestly say the rooms were double the size, better appointed and had a far superior breakfast for less cost . The hotel has been recently refurbished and is overpricing its guests to recoup the cost…… in my humble...
