First off, I want to say that while I have some issues with this hotel, I have nothing but excellent things to say about the staff! To a person, they were warm and friendly, from the folks at check in to housekeeping. Give credit where credit is due -- they were all lovely!||Now, onto the hotel itself:||LOCATION/ARRIVAL: The hotel is located in the Cross Keys complex, and you will see a sign upon arrival into the complex. After that point there is minimal signage, and all of us had a hard time finding our way: You want to drive left and go around the back of the whole complex. Parking is in the garage or lot -- there was amble there and it was free. ||BUILDING/ROOM: Listen, the place has good bones -- it was built in the 1960s and the architecture is fun. But the hotel itself is in sore need of a full renovation. Wallpaper is peeling, carpet is outdated, elevator is clearly older, etc. Furniture was clearly on the newer side, but still showing signs of wear. However, bed was clean and decent, and the TV was newer and allowed access to things like Netflix and Pandora, with an easy option to log out anytime (also done automatically after check-out). If you care about views and lighting, ask for a room overlooking the courtyard.||OTHER ITEMS: Good wifi. Free parking. Free continental breakfast that went beyond the basics. Restaurant was not open, so you can't get any food onsite beyond the little convenience store (nothing onsite in the complex, either -- you're going to need to get delivery or drive somewhere). Some funky smells in the hallway. Not great soundproofing -- could clearly hear music from the room next door, even over our own TV.||BOTTOM LINE: I hope that the new owners of the Cross Keys complex work with Marriott to invest in renovation, open the restaurant, and get more going on in the complex in general. I expect that in 2-5 years this hotel will be a great place to visit and prices will go up significantly. In the meantime, it's a fine place for a night or two for those on a budget looking to be...
Read moreThis was a crazy experience! So I recently got a room here and the customer service was horrible. What has set me off is the customer service my son (14 years old) and I received. My son entered the hotel looking for the room, the thing about my my son is he likes to take the stairs not the elevator (plus there was a sign in front of the elevator stating the elevator was not in service) as he walked up a flight of stairs and realized he was going the wrong way (basically lost) a gentleman directed him back down the stairs and to the right direction. Now once he was in the main lobby the gentleman that handles the front desk- directed him to the 4th floor. Now here is where my problem kicked up: as I entered the hotel the two gentleman were now in the main lobby talking about they caught my son sneaking around the hotel, now I’m upset because I was watching him as I was coming in and that’s how I was able to catch their conversation. Instead asking if he needed help it was automatic assumed he was sneaking around which in turn could have made things go in another direction had police been called! This now has my attention peaked because of the gentlemen conversation - I had to say that was my son and he was not sneaking around the hotel he was trying to get the 4th floor. Both gentleman stop talking once I said that was my son, one guy walked off as the front desk guy stood there with the “Deer in headlights look” neither gentleman apologized for the mishap. Then I proceeded to asked if their were any matches - the front desk guy decided to say, “No this a smoke free hotel” however there was a guy outside the hotel front door smoking 😡😩🤦🏿♀️ I wasn’t asking for matches so I could smoke in the room but I did want them so I could smoke in my own car. I would not recommend this hotel if this is the customer service that is offered! The room is absolutely beautiful and the location is definitely a great location but again the customer service my son and I have received could have...
Read moreOK...first of all let me say the staff could not have been more pleasant. Good for them. They are trying to make lemonade out of lemons. They kept this from being a 1 star review.
However...this is a hotel I can only describe as 'bizarrely outdated'. I really can't even take the time to enumerate all the ways it is or all the little things that annoyed me...the franchise owners should just stay at one of the Hampton Inns in Baltimore that I usually stay at to compare. For example, the toilet in the room was the very early low water types that flush at a snail's pace and are VERY easy to clog. Most hotels/motels I stay at these days have updated to better ones. Maybe the one most important to mention is that the elevator control panels - and presumably the elevators themselves - are some of the oldest I've seen in decades. I think I last saw something like that at an old office building in Falls Church, VA, where my childhood dentist practiced in the 1980s. Truly a museum piece. Once, early in my stay, I wanted to return to the garage and tried to press the button "G" to go to the ground floor. It wouldn't light up. Luckily another guest was riding with me and said "you have to press that one really hard"! Oh wait - it gets better. A day later I was in the lobby - looking at the forlorn, heavily picked-over selection of food in the canteen/self-service area...and noticed one of the elevators was open but not leveled to the floor...about 18 inches too high. The alarm bell was ringing and a maintenance worker hopped inside to use his key to try to reset it and I guess get it to land correctly. Seriously? This is like a scene from Fawlty Towers! In my entire life I've only once seen an open elevator that wasn't level to the floor, and that was in a building under construction. Things like that can be incredibly dangerous. I like the location, it's convenient for me when I have to travel to Baltimore...but this place needs some serious investment...
