My husband and I spent 3 nights last week. This was our 5th stay at this hotel. Over the past 5 years there have been some great improvements but also some big problems. First let me say that the hotel is beautiful and the location can not be beat. The improvements: the wifi has gotten much better. I didn't have any connection issues during my most recent stay. Next, the pool is much more clean and clear since a switch to salt water. Last, there has been an attempt to upgrade some of the furniture particularly the couches in the rooms. Now for the bad. My husband called a few days before our stay to add an extra day. When he called there was no answer twice. Finally, he spoke to a rude person who informed us that our reservation had been cancelled. After a few awkward minutes on the phone she did find our reservation and added the extra day. This problem with some rude staff members has been a problem with all of our stays. Some of the staff (Diana and Chelsea) are fantastic and are always pleasant to deal with and others (including housekeeping) are rude and very short with you. As far as our stay this trip we had a problem checking in. We called on our way to the hotel from New Orleans to inquiry about check-in. Chelsea was very pleasant and told us we could check in as soon as we got to Biloxi. We arrived and checked in and were given our keys. We went to the room and the door would not open. When the key card was swiped the light turned green and when you pushed the door it appeared locked. We then went back down 5 floors with a full luggage cart to report our problem. We were given keys to another room after checking to make sure it was the same type of room we requested. Up 4 floors with the luggage cart and the room was not what we had requested (we asked for a balcony door off the living room not the bedroom.) Back down to 3 again and finally we got our keys and unpacked and hit the beach. Do yourself a favor when you first check in. CHECK EVERYTHING!!!!The bed, shower, kitchen items etc. Make sure they are all in good order and that the room is clean. It wasn't until later that night when we went to bed that we realized that the bed was so broken down that when you laid on it you rolled right into the middle. By the time we figured this out it was late so we decided to tough it out. WORST NIGHT SLEEP!!! The next morning my husband went down and explained the problem and the rude person at the front desk remarked with a giggle that we had already had quite a few problems with rooms. We were given new keys and we spent the next hour packing, moving and unpacking. I was pleased that when I left something in the previous room someone from housekeeping brought them to my new room. When she did I asked for another blanket for the bed and more towels she explained it would be difficult because their laundry suppliers dryer was broken but she'd see what she could do. She did find a bedspread and 2 skimpy little bath towels. The final straws were a broken coffee maker, lots of normal things missing or unusable condition in the kitchen and a shower that dripped all night. Also, we thought we had out smarted the dripping shower when we closed the pocket door but the door just kept sliding open every time it was closed and no way to keep it closed as the lock is on the inside of the bathroom. After a few minor problems and calls to the front desk that went unanswered. The phone just rings and rings. Finally my husband went to check out. He explained our concerns to Diana and she was very nice and explained she would have a manager call us. We checked out on Friday morning and as of today (Monday morning) there had been no call. We will continue to stay at the South Beach because it is the only hotel on the beach and that is important but I would hope that there will be improvements to the staff and upgrades to their attention to detail. The South Beach Biloxi should be glad they have no competition for accommodations...
Read moreLet me start by saying the hotel itself should get 5 stars. I gave it 4 based on the restaurant which I will explain later.
What can I say but this hotel was exactly what we were looking for! Went in and the staff was friendly and very helpful. We got to our room and it was clean! NO BEDBUGS! Fridge in the room, coffee maker, hairdryer, iron, etc. Everything you need to relax including a couch that makes into a bed if you need it. We had a balcony over the street which was great! Sure it was noisy with the door open but close it and nothing but silence.
The bed is comfortable, the pillows are comfortable...let's just say we slept pretty well. The shower could use some more power but that's just my preference. We did have the DO NOT DISTURB sign on our door however one of the staff came in anyway. I was there, she asked if we needed anything and then apologized and said she didn't see the sign. Not a big deal, didn't mention it to the hotel...seemed like an honest mistake. I think she was embarrassed, I'm just glad I was in there talking to my family instead of showering, changing, etc.
One of my favorite parts of the stay? The voice in the elevator. She seems so happy to stop at a floor or to say, "going up". However, when it's time to descend she sounds so sad about it. What can I say, I enjoy the simple things in life.
They are close to Keesner Air Force Base which is very cool! We had several big air force planes take off / land and we could see them quite clearly. Each time we just watched it and smiled. We saw a couple kids there and they loved it, too. It wasn't a lot, so it wasn't annoying. In 2 days we saw a low plane maybe 6 - 8 times...just enough to be cool.
Now for the reason I took away a star. In the elevators there is a sign for the on-site restaurant. Nachos, beer...all the stuff I want. Stopped in at the front desk to check-in and there was a standee sign with an arrow pointing to the restaurant with their specials (again, teasing me with nachos and beer). After being able to resist no longer the wife and I went in to place those 2 specific food items in my belly. We walked in, nobody sitting down, nobody behind the bar. One young girl sees us and says that they are closed. "Oh", says the wife, "when will you reopen?". The response..."Friday". It was Monday. Huh? We were confused but thought maybe we missed something on the sign. On the way back up (with the happy elevator voice) we looked on the sign and it said nothing about weekends only, or not open during the week, etc. I'm still confused about it, but we went to Waffle House next door and were happy with that. Although I never did get my nachos.
The pool was clean, the grounds were well taken care of and everything worked as it should. The coffee wasn't that good, though. But it's coffee. We're not there for the coffee, we're there for a clean, comfortable place with friendly staff where we can enjoy the beach. That is exactly...
Read moreWent to Biloxi on 3 day weekend, off-season. Two adults, 3 children (aged 4, 11 and 16). Got 2 bedroom 1 1/2 bath suite with bunk beds. Overall, room was great, and family friendly. On the beach. Decent pool. Only issue in room, is one toilet did not flush... but with a second bathroom, it was not a terribly big deal.
Big complaint here though, is the guest service. After booking and paying for the room on 9/11/2013, I arrived on Saturday 9/21/2013, and at check-in was notified that they hadn't assigned us a room. Took 15 minutes to sort that out, and hovered dangerously close to not having a room at all - bad bad bad!
But the worst was yet to come... On checkout day, we decided to spend the morning from 8-9 am on the beach and let the little one play in the sand, then swim in the pool from 9-10:30 am and then leisurely, shower and pack from 10:30 - 11:30 and then hit the café before checking out - per the hotels checkout policy, at 12 pm Well, the hotel had other plans for us.
Management supposedly called our room at 11 am (which I didn't hear because I was in the shower, and no one else heard because they were watching tv and packing in the livingroom) to tell us we either needed to leave immediately or be trapped in our room all day - they were replacing carpet in the hall with tile.
Since we didn't answer the phone, a "maintenance" worker, simply barged into our room, without knocking, using his maintenance keycard, and told my wife that we had to "go now, or be trapped in the room all day"
Well, we weren't packed and ready, but we HAD to go because we had plans... So we quickly threw everything, haphazardly together, with no knowing what was packed where, and attempted to leave at 11:20 am, but found we could not leave because the maintenance workers had already started smearing tile glue everywhere in the hall. They so courteously left us a 1 foot "walking path" that was far too small to wheel our luggage through.
The manager ended up sending hospitality workers to help us lift and carry our wheeled items through to the elevator, but had they waited til 12pm - checkout time, to start work , instead of 11, we'd have been gone properly of our on accord...
But, the fact remains... we weren't quite ready to go, but in effect were kicked out. We weren't able to pack properly, get cleaned up, or visit the café, as we now had perishables packed "somewhere" in our car The management decided to start replacing the carpet without waiting for the checkout time to arrive, which is just awful. I hate to think of what would have happened if we had been out on the beach, just coming in... we'd have been sandy, and wet, hanging out in the lobby for hours with a 4 year old...waiting for tile glue to dry so we could get...
