The Monarch Cove Inn in Capitola is charming, as is all the staff (office, cleaners, handyman). The woman who checked me in was extremely friendly and accommodating, and available by cell phone if I needed anything. ||If you're looking for a sterile Hilton, this is not for you. But it is perfect for independent people who like style. If you need brand new carpet, etc., then there are more expensive newer hotels you can stay at. But if you think a little paint chipping just adds charm to a historic building, then you might love this place!||I stayed in the Lavender Room, which has a wonderful view of the Monterey Bay and the grounds. A lovely breakfast was brought to my room each morning: fresh toasted bagel (I expected it to be cold, but it was still very warm!) with cream cheese and butter and jam options, a parfait of delicious fresh fruit, a special request of hot water and tea (instead of coffee). It was quite satisfying.||The grounds are lit up brightly so you can find your way back to your room after a night out with friends, and feel safe walking around. ||If I stayed in winter I would ask for a space heater because the bathroom would be quite chilly, and not sure if the electric fire/heater would warm the room enough in winter. It was probably in the 50s during my stay in March and it was plenty warm enough. ||The bed was very comfortable, and it was the perfect cozy place to come 'home' to at the end of they day. ||As a side note, the owner donated adjacent land to the city where the monarch butterflies hibernate in winter, so this park land is available to the public for free and includes public bathrooms. ||My only real complaint is not about the room, but that the owner wants to sell the property, and instead of selling as-is (I saw a letter from a realtor assessing it for $3.1M a few years ago), he is trying to get permission set up for the next owner to be able to ruin this beautiful property with 40 units. This would make it as sterile as so many other boring hotels, and I would hate to be one of the neighbors who has my peaceful neighborhood ruined with all that...

The Blodgett family ownership saga continues, but we had no idea when we booked. The website photos are decptive, taken from years ago even a decade ago, as are the photos ubmitted to online booking sites. And it is not an "inn" at all. There is no "inn" -- just a series of run-down cottages divided into rooms that have not been kept up to any decent standard, and the "breakfast" is comprised of a stale bagel cut in half for two people, two dry pastries, two glasses of canned orange juice, a parfait of chopped fruit, and a carafe of coffee. The owner will not refund your money, and communication is essentially non-existent.|This place is part of a huge drama within Santa Cruz County, and I highly recommend that you do not stay here. Friends don't let friends stay at the deceptively named Monarch Cove Inn in...

I am on Hospice through, UCD, Sacramento, Ca, who along with the Dream Foundation aka dreamfoundation.org arranged for me to stay here, as my end of life wish, with my family. The rooms are classical as well as magical, full of character and charm. Just driving up, took my breath away. The Inn is over a hundred years old, so the history is evident. Walking underneath arbors, filled with beautiful ferns, tropical colorful flowers, with a beautiful fountain to sit next to, brought me such peace. The provided, a spectacular breakfast, with trays filled with pastries, fresh juice, cut up glasses filled with fresh fruit, various yogurts, fresh coffee & cream, which was such a nice morning pleasure. The staff is professional and made me and my family feel at home. The Monarch Butterfly Inn, is all about the view. The water is calm here in the cove, you can look out and see paddleboarders off in the calmness paddling at measure, along with canoes, and people fishing.
