NOT a conventional sushi restaurant. I don't think there are any Japanese or even Asian chefs who work here. The vegan rolls are good, but my friends and I hated the traditional rolls. The fish didn't seem fresh (the salmon looked gray) and the type of crab (?) used was very pungent. When I looked over to the sushi bar, it seemed like the fish they were using was just left on the counter and not stored in a fridge in between orders... The fried part of the shrimp inside my roll was sponge-like and not what tempura should feel like, texture wise. And the cilantro??? There was so much cilantro in one of the rolls that at first I couldn't taste the fish. I've never had a roll with cilantro before and that's probably gonna be the last time too. Everything I tasted in this restaurant that didn't come prepackaged had an off-taste to it. It was sushi, sure, but a little bit to the left. The waitress we had was very nice and I didn't have the heart to tell her that the food sucked. I could tell that she was super stressed. Thank god I didn't eat all of my rolls because I had a feeling I would get a stomach ache like other...
Read moreBest sushi restaurant in all of Santa Cruz! Here they serve lots of creative rolls and other excellent Japanese-inspiried cuisine. The decor is tastefully done with touches of pink, and the lighting is romantic at night. During the day the windows provide ample sunlight and it's suitable for brunch! The restaurant as a whole is clean, including the spacious and nicely decorated bathroom. There's only one, so on busy nights it can create a wait. The waitstaff are extremely friendly and aren't at all too pushy about clearing tables, letting you digest at a reasonable pace. This place is definitely family friendly, and good for dates and/or small parties. They have a back half walled off room which I imagine they can convert for larger parties if you call in with a reservation. It can get a bit loud but it's to be expected for a popular restaurant! Try the Unforgettable roll if you're really looking for something new, it's smoked fish and herbs covered in a...
Read moreWalked in and stood there for 5 min for in an almost empty restaurant for someone to acknowledge us. “Server” looked at me with a “Yes???, what do you want?” attitude, and when I told him a table for 2, he grumpily told me to pick a table, once again with the attitude, like I should have known to seat ourselves . Waited some time at the table without menus, so I finally found some at the front and helped myself. Sat there for at least 10 minutes longer without him coming to take our orders or bring water. Restaurant had to be at least 90 degrees and miserable. There was only one other table seated, so it wasn’t as if they’re were swamped. Even the sushi bar employees never greeted us or paid any attention when we stood there waiting for a table in almost empty restaurant. I was so excited to being my husband here for our anniversary dinner and instead, we walked out and grabbed a burrito downstairs. One of the worst near-dining...
