We really enjoyed our stay in the Canandaigua room at the Dartmouth House. Gary was extremely welcoming and prepared fantastic breakfasts for us on the days we were able to enjoy it. I wish we would have been able to stay long enough for breakfast on our last day, but our flight left too early. A grab and go bag would have been a nice touch. The house was quaint and cozy, and we felt more like guests at a friend's house more than visitors at a hotel. It was close enough to the airport for convenience, but far enough away you felt like you weren't in the hustle and bustle. There were also some great dining options in walking distance.
There were a couple issues that we had, and those are the tub-in-shower configuration of our bathroom. I know they put a disclaimer in the room descriptions, but I feel like the addition of anti-slip material on the lip of the shower that forms a natural step would be very helpful. The bed was also a weak point of the room as it seemed a bit past its prime. It was extremely soft and had obvious worn in spots that would pull you into them, making getting comfortable difficult for both of us.
I'd like to mention a few things that I don't want to hold against them because they're out of their control. Street parking is the number one issue. We arrived somewhat late at night and it was kind of difficult to decipher what the parking signs said because the lighting was poor. The breakfast service was somewhat slow, and there was a lack of cleanliness. There was visible dirt inside some of the water glasses, and spider webs in both the breakfast area and our room. Gary had mentioned he was basically running the place solo because Milena was out sick. If that is the case and the true reason for these things, I commend him for doing such a good job and keeping it running as well as he did without risking the health of the guests by having a sick host. I just wanted to mention this here in case it's a long standing issue.
Overall I would highly recommend the Dartmouth House, and hope we are able to stay there again some time...
Read moreAs indicated in previous reviews, Dartmouth House has a great location in a beautiful, walkable neighborhood, it's a charming, restored old home, the innkeepers (who are not the owners) are gracious, friendly, and accommodating, and the home-cooked breakfasts are fantastic. They emailed in advance of our stay inquiring about preferences, and they accommodated every one of them. We booked Dartmouth House in part because they have a Tesla charger, which we were able to reserve for our stay. Unfortunately, it wasn't working when we arrived (they had courteously emailed us a day ahead to let us know, so we wouldn't arrive with a depleted battery). They were able to get it fixed on day two of our stay. Things to know that I didn't see mentioned in previous reviews: (1) The house is centrally air conditioned, but there was no thermostat by which to control the temperature in our own room. It was unseasonably warm our first day there, and it was too hot in the room for my taste despite opening windows. (2) It's an old house with creaky floors. We were in the Keuka room on the second floor, and we heard the squeaking whenever anyone walked up the stairs. We also heard every footstep taken by the guests in the room on the third floor -- squeaky floorboards! The charm of the house and the innkeepers went a long way toward making up for these negatives, but these issues definitely detracted...
Read moreWhat a lovely gem of a b&b in our hometown of Rochester. My husband and I decided to do a staycation for our anniversary and, after reviewing our options and reading the reviews here, we chose Dartmouth and the Hemlock Room. The house is a beautiful old home. Our bed was very soft and comfortable and we soaked in the deep claw-foot tub both the evening we arrived and the morning after. Everything was immaculately clean. We also loved the gorgeous dining area; we had delicious crepes (thank you for the vegetarian options!) and homemade muffins for breakfast. The innkeepers were great and came out to talk with us while we had breakfast. Milena was especially responsive and even made it possible for us to check in early if we needed. It's within walking distance to Park Ave and lots of adorable restaurants (we recommend Roux and Verns!). I will be recommending this place...
