Read moreIt was ok. The confirmation email did not provide a check in time, so I called the front desk but didn't get an answer. After a few minutes of the phone ringing, I decided to send them a facebook message with no response but I didn't mind because I knew they wouldn't be on 24/7. A few minutes later, someone finally picked up (Almost 10 minutes total just to get someone to pick up the phone, by the way). When I logged onto Facebook later that day, I saw that the hotel read my message but did not bother to reply.
When we went to check in, the young man at the desk saw us-- he looked up from his phone and made eye contact-- but continued to text for about a minute or so before he came to help us. Our room was beautiful, however, when we went to sleep, we got bit all night. The next morning, some of us had bite marks all over our backs and arms. We checked both the beds for bugs, but didn't see anything, so who knows, could be the bed sheets and the detergent used. Sadly, there's no housekeeping unless you ask for it, and they take out from your deposit, so we didn't even ask for new bed sheets.
A lot of guests were Chinese and they can be rude! They will push you in the elevators and lobbies to get to their destinations and don't expect an apology from them (I know the hotel doesn't control rude behavior of guests, but thought I'd share).
When we checked out, we were aware of the hotel's LONG list of rules, so we made sure not to violate any because we knew they would keep our $100 deposit. Upon checking out (and since we paid our deposit in cash), the front desk staff had to page someone to go check our room before he handed us our deposit. Some of the rules included: no smoking, keeping the shower curtains inside so water does not spill on the floor, not bringing any of the complimentary breakfast into the room, etc. The list goes on. The hotel was especially adamant on the no smoking rule. When our room was cleared, we finally received our $100 deposit, but I continued to check my bank account because I've heard of people getting charged extra later on (I paid for the room with a credit card).
This place was our last resort, otherwise we probably would have never stayed here. We actually migrated from a motel not too far from LA Crystal that had cockroaches! I do admit I enjoyed the complimentary breakfast at LA Crystal though. From what I remember, they had scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, rice, toast, ham, fruits, salad, waffles, sausages,...
Read moreThis time in LA, I decided to pick a hotel further from downtown, as downtown hotels were extremely expensive. I chose LA Crystal, next to Artesia station, as I would be relying on public transit. However, Metro has closed the station entrance on the hotel’s side of the tracks, so it was a ten-minute hike to the hotel, which came as an unpleasant surprise.||||Once at the hotel, I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist. I got my room at 1 pm, ahead of official check-in time. I was happy to see the room fulfilled four-star criteria: It was large, came with a wide and comfortable double bed, a sitting area with armchairs and a coffee table, a desk, ample closet and drawer space, two 0.5 L water bottles (replenshed during cleaning), a fridge, efficient (but noisy) A/C, sockets by the bed etc. The curtains did a good job keeping the room dark. However, there was no safe and the wifi connection was spotty. It was free and unlimited, but especially uploading was difficult at times, and sending emails with attachments simply didn’t work as the connection timed out every time. There was some traffic noise, but it didn’t bother me. They hosted some parties on the ground floor during the weekend, but no noise reached my room on the 5th floor.||||The decor in the room felt a bit oldfashioned, but the room was clean and everything was in good condition. This is what hotel rooms looked like 25 years ago. Cleaning is on request only, so every other day I asked for the room to be cleaned, and this was done when I was out.||||The bathroom came with your typical American low bathtub + shower combo, with a wall-mounted showerhead with good water pressure. Amenities included minibottles of shampoo and body lotion as well as small bars of soap. I find these a lot more hygienic than the containers some hotels choose to place on their bathroom walls to save money.||||There was a microwave and an ice machine in the hallway. The swimmingpool (open 9 am to 10 pm) was a bit too cold for me but I enjoyed the hot tub on the pool deck.||||While the room was really nice, the hotel doesn’t otherwise offer any amenities. There is no breakfast and no restaurant (there are plenty of eateries in the strip mall a ten- minute-walk away, as well as a Target and an Aldi).||||I do prefer a downtown location, but value for money is definitely better here and I can very well see myself returning. Special thanks to Mike for being so helpful...
