We hadn’t necessarily panned on staying in Escanaba on our way through the Upper Peninsula, but we are so glad we did! Beyond the beauty of the parks and lakeshore, this hotel was a great find for us! We didn’t have reservations - we just walked in and checked out room rates and availability. We opted for the slightly more expensive king bed suite that features a sleeper sofa (our son is young and small enough to just sleep on the sofa without folding it out, but the sofa bed was set with sheets and a blanket if needed). The rates were very reasonable and I feel absolutely fair for the accommodations - there are cheaper places in town, but the little extra really shows in the staff, amenities, and room appointments. There was a small refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker in our room, as well as a desk, seating area, and coffee table. The room was very clean and neat - the carpet and furniture were clean and stain-free. The bathroom was surprisingly larger than the average corporate chain hotel’s offering, and was well-stocked and clean as well. The parking and entrances are conveniently located all the way around the building, so we were able to park directly in front of our ground-floor room and access it quickly and easily. We stayed on a Tuesday night, so while I can report that the hotel was quiet and no too crowded, your experience may vary if you visit on a weekend. Reading reviews isn’t always illuminating when it comes to choosing a hotel in a town you’re just passing through, so I’d like to note that I only rate places that I feel deserve your attention - I’d definitely stay here again and would recommend it to...
Read moreDisappointed, expected much.much more from a 4.5 star hotel, service was shoddy, reception was rude and very unprofessional, collars bent hair unkempt, uniforms not pressed, 1 room was missing 1 light, dust and dirt on the counter tops, room service was OK at best. While eating the wait staff was running, but nothing was getting done, watched as 5 tables stayed dirty all the time, no bus staff. One waitress did the bare minimum while the other ran like a chicken with its head cut off, but tables stayed dirty. Kept hearing that from the one waitress " sorry hold on minute, all the tables are dirty." Waited for service about 10 minutes. When finally got served I had to wait 15 minutes for another cup of coffee, finally just got fed up and left and got a coffee at McDonald's. For the money....do NOT go here. The pool was maybe 68 to 70 degrees, colder than the lake where I'm from... Also got the room with the hot tub and fireplace but the fireplace didn't work and more than 2/3 of the channels don't work on the TV. Chairs were stiff and hard to sit on. Nothing really comfortable to sit on. No couch it was either a stiff wood framed chair or sit on the bed. Sorry that this place is even called a Best Western. Shouldn't have this name is have stayed in plenty of them and this one falls very short of that title. I will go to a motel before...
Read moreWe had a great check in at this hotel. Had to sign off on no pets and no smoking. Our first floor room was spacious with two queen beds, microwave, and a fridge. Second floor rooms had balconies. The hotel had an indoor pool, but we didn’t make it there. There was also a pub downstairs that was open from 5-10 p.m. but we didn’t make it there either!|A continental breakfast was included with our stay. Loved the breakfast room. It was a nice set up in a very roomy large space and there were lots of tables available. The first yogurt I took was past its expiry date, the English muffin had mold on it, and the coffee was not drinkable, but otherwise breakfast was good! There were cereals, fresh fruit (pears, bananas, apples, oranges), pastries, waffles for the toaster, pop tarts, bagels and breads individually wrapped, granola bars, boxes of raisins and cereal bars. The Rice Krispie bars had a handwritten note on the package reading, "Thanks for staying with us." Such a nice personal touch!|I asked about the Magnusson near Paradise, MI, but the front desk person didn’t know much about it; she said they are independently owned, and the Escanaba hotel is family owned.|The only cons to our stay were that we didn’t notice any recycling on this property, and there were no automated doors or ramps at the entrances. Everything...
