Cool hotel! 🏨 #frostburg #maryland #travel #fyp #hotel #usa #roadtrip

Wow! This one is beautiful. We rode the Western Maryland Railway from Cumberland to Frostburg, MD. The have a free shuttle on the Frostburg end that takes you directly to The Gunter Hotel. You enter through the basement. Passing The Speakeasy, some awesome museum esq displays, through the old jailhouse that has it's own little displays, and finally up into the hotel itself. The staff, from the railway to the hotel and everyone in between is beyond phenomenal. I cannot say enough wonderful things about them all. They love what they do and it shines throughout the experience. I only wish we could have had time to actually spend the night at the hotel. Hey, there is always next time! I've lived within an hour from this attraction for over 20 years and cannot believe I've not gone sooner. I would happily spend a week's vacation based around the whole experience that centers around both the Railway and The Gunter itself. Please, go do it for yourself! You will not regret it. Whether you just want to kill a few hours, want a weekend getaway, or just love adventure. This one has it all and you don't even have to be into trains or the history of the railroad industry to enjoy. The kids will love it too.

Great spot for a night in Frostburg: This hotel has lots of vintage charm. It's bicycle friendly, and is well worth the push up to Rt. 40 from the GAP trail to stay there. The rooms are clean and attractive. There is secure bike storage with clean-up rags downstairs stairs and an elevator to move things around. The lobby oozes character and has a small counter with espresso and baked goods. The location is right in the middle of the downtown business district with a number of dining options. We didn't eat at the attached Toasted Goat restaurant/brewery/distillery, but it looks good and I'd like to try it next time. The outdoor dining out back looks very nice.

My wife and I spent this past Friday evening at this hotel. We loved the place if a little grubby, dated and musty smelling. Once we checked in, we wandered the fascinating and unique building, had great drinks at the bar, headed out into the crisp mountain air to walk around town (it was our first visit), had a great dinner, walked back to the hotel, and went up to our room to enjoy quiet, relaxing, country comfort. That lasted about 10 minutes.

At about 7:00, with no warning, a band started blasting away outside our window. When it seemed like they were going to be playing a while, and they were actually getting louder, I went down stairs to see if an accommodation could be made - like moving us to a room away from the noise. It’s important to note here that the band was playing at the hotel itself, under the full control and with the full knowledge of the hotel.

The only person we could find to help us was the Bar Manager who said he could do nothing for us, no other rooms were available, we would have to wait it out, and the bands stop at 9:00 anyway. Frustrated, I called the phone number the hotel provided, and left two voice messages. No response. Turned out we had to endure the music for three hours - they wrapped it up at 10:00. If we wanted to hear music, we would have gone to see a band, that’s not why we rented a room. We’re experienced travelers, and pretty game, but this was just rude and totally unprofessional.

I am flabbergasted not just at the fact that a hotel would rent a room to unsuspecting guests when they knew full well that a loud band would be playing outside their window, but at the fact that the issue was not addressed, never mind resolved. The final disappointment being that I emailed to them about this and they ignored my email as well. Someone needs to go back to...

We knew the hotel was historic and looked forward to its unique character based on some reviews. All was fine on arrival - quaint lobby, little coffee bar, cute restaurant adjoined. I was a little confused when she said that the doors are locked at 9:00pm for the “residents living there,” but decided that added to its quirkiness. After parking in the back lot, we walked through the funhouse basement with varying degrees of fascination and incredulity over the “exhibits” - btw the Speakeasy and coal mine are super cool. But making our way to our room on the 2nd floor felt like The Shining - old red carpet, dark narrow hallway, exposed wires on old light fixtures. And our room itself was small and musty, with popcorn ceiling, one ceiling fixture, rock-hard bed, tiny bathroom - about like my childhood room at Grandma’s house. Exploring the rest of the 2nd floor, we noticed that ours was the only room that wasn’t a residence, and that the end of each hall had a cool little iron balcony - complete with mold and full ashtrays.|We didn’t expect the Four Seasons, but had some expectation of comfort - tbh we couldn’t have spent more than 5 minutes in our room without a feeling of impending doom. They need to either convert the entire building to residences or do a major rehab. No one should pay to stay here...
