I can't begin to tell you how terrible this hotel is. I'm a loyal lifetime Marriott platinum member, and this hotel was a pathetic excuse for a hotel. Marriott management should immediately visit, evaluate and close it down for a complete overhaul. To be fair, the rooms were nicely appointed in terms of furnishings, technology, bathrooms, rugs, cleanliness, etc., but that's where the positive ends. I chose this hotel since it was on the airport grounds and a quick shuttle ride to the airport. What a mistake. At check-in, I was not treated appropriately by the staff, and wasn't offered lounge access as I should have like the elite Bonvoy member ahead of me. I couldn't help but feel there was a cultural reason for it, as I was spoken down to during the entire check-in process (curt, to the point, etc.). My member status wasn't recognized either, which is not typical of well run Marriott properties. Our hotel key card worked for the lounge, so we were able to make use of it regardless. Unlike the Marriott hotel at Newark airport, this IAD Marriott lounge offered only potato chips and a fridge with soda in it. No other food was offered and the room was completely unstaffed. The lounge was useless and should have been used for the adjacent poorly designed restaurant if it wasn't going to be used as a lounge with food options. Now to the restaurant. It is a bar/restaurant combo with a few giant sized tables suitable for parties of 5 or more, and some low couch type bar tables. Not nearly enough tables for the crowd that was staying the evening we stayed. The few tables had couples or small families using only a small portion of the table, so there was no place to sit and order and have a nice meal with my wife. Had they used the useless lounge next door with tons of smaller tables, all guests who wanted to eat in the restaurant could have been accommodated. Restaurant and lounge poorly designed and utilized. Marriott failed in this regard. We had to order from a local establishment, which was ok, but food was cold due to the delivery time. Now to the WORST part of this hotel....The rooms. No heat, no hot water on a freezing cold 20 degree night. Are you kidding me? The in room ventilation system was ancient and didn't work. Unit would turn on for about a minute and turn back off with no heat coming out of it. Thermostat was set properly, it just simply didn't work. I read other reviews that complained about the in-room ventilation, so shame on me for not taking that into account. We froze, but fortunately the bed was extremely comfortable and had very warm blankets on it. We figured we'd get up in the morning and take a nice hot shower before heading to the airport for our flight back home to Hawaii. Much to our horror, NO HOT WATER in the morning. The water was so cold, it was as if it was just above the freezing mark. We ran the hot water in the sink as well as the tub for 30 minutes but not even luke warm water was available. What a freaking disaster this was. Not worth complaining to the hotel staff, as it was obviously known there was no hot water, and there is nothing they will be able to do about it. I'm not big about complaining to the hotel staff about basic things that should be in full working order like heat and hot water. This hotel sorely misses the mark on being a full service Marriott branded hotel, and needs to be dropped by the brand or undergo a complete overhaul (plant, equipment, staffing, management, etc.). Stay away at all costs. If you are loyal to Marriott like I am, they have other properties a short distance away that are much newer...
Read moreConvenient for airport stays, with a building layout that results in plenty of walking. I've come to dislike hotels that have their lounge at the front, and then require you to make a 3-10 minute walk to your room. Unfortunately, due to the arrangement of the buildings, it was quite a walk dragging heavy checked baggage down the hallways to my room.
I would still stay at this hotel, but didn't find that it provided any time savings over other hotels in the area, and would recommend other locations.
Upon landing, I checked for the hotel shuttle details, which the team at the hotel had emailed to me. I appreciated the webpage they've setup, which allows you to see the exact location of the shuttle, and whether you should run to make it to the pickup point, or make your way there leisurely. It was a full bus, and upon arrival at the hotel I only had to wait a few minutes for check-in. Note that there is no "Elite" desk/line - just a general understanding that everyone should wait their turns.
The room was a standard Marriott-brand hotel room, which was in very good condition - no signs of wear and tear in it. It faced inwards towards the courtyard and pool, so of course you need to close your blinds for privacy. Plenty of room for the king size bed, dresser with TV atop, desk, and a sitting chair, without it feeling crowded. My room did have an adjoining door, and I could hear my neighbor talking clearly through the door; thankfully a towel placed around the bottom of the door muffled the sounds a little.
Although the room was listed as a "Concierge Lounge Room", the lounge was placed on the other side of the lobby, not on the same floor/area as the Concierge Lounge rooms. Instead, a Crew Lounge was located on that floor.
While I understand the closing of lounges in primarily business hotels, this is an airport hotel with plenty of frequent flyers using it. Unfortunately I was told that the lounge was closed for the weekend, with the exception of breakfast. The lounge could have been left opened and not served hot food, to allow elites to access it for water and coffee.
The hotel is located "on" the airport, although you'll still need the ~5-7 minute shuttle ride to get to it. This means that you're not just walking from the terminal to it, but that it lessens the sound of airplanes taking off and landing.
The hotel offers two pools - one indoor, and one outdoor, both of which are a...
Read moreMy husband and I have been Starwood and now Marriott Bonvoy members for about 20 years. We both have traveled for work and vacation extensively, and have almost exclusively stayed in brands under these memberships for that time period. This trip was a combined business and pleasure trip - my husband had work in the area and I accompanied him as we have family in the area that I visited with.
We have never stayed in a hotel that was LESS up to the brand standards than this property. It is old and very dated with very uncomfortable beds. Our first room was in the wing of the hotel that apparently has an outdated HVAC system that can't handle switching from heat to A/C at the guest's control - our room ended up being 76 degrees when I was trying to cool it to 68 - and when I requested maintenance to look at it, we returned to find that they had simply switched the thermostat off completely and left a portable fan running in an attempt to cool the room.
Further, when we returned to the room at 11pm that night, we discovered that the deadbolt had somehow become engaged and had to break into our own room because the Security team came ill equipped with just a couple of key cards. We finally asked to switch rooms and we're given a room with two doubles as they had no king bed rooms available. I will mention that while we were packing up our stuff to relocate to the new room, the gentleman at the front desk went the extra mile to personally confirm our new room was at our desired temperature.
Unfortunately we were not able to resolve these issues and get settled in our new room until well after midnight, and with a 6am wake-up call for work, my husband was incredibly inconvenienced and did not get a good night's sleep at all.
Needless to say, as long-term members of this brand, we have never been more disappointed in a brand hotel than we were with this property, and will never willingly choose to stay here again. The Marriott Bonvoy brand should be embarrassed by this property - we can only hope that renovations are planned very soon to bring this property up to their...
