This was my wedding venue. We had excellent room block rates and the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception were all held at the W. We had an event manager, who left during our planning, and there was such a smooth transition to working with Ariel. Ariel was greatly helpful through the planning process with problem solving and always responded promptly. The venue has great facilities for each need of our event. The banquet manager was very attentive during the reception.
Feedback: Upon getting a welcome bag for my hotel room, I discovered that the weekend agenda card was not on my bag. This was a concern, as the card included important information that hotel guests who attended my wedding needed. If the card weren’t on my bag, what if others also didn’t get their card? I shared this with the desk, and I was informed that if they don’t notice it, there’s nothing they can do about it. This showed very little care for the guests or my wedding. As a result, I asked for all of the welcome bags back, so I could make sure all of them were securely tied. It isn’t the best look for the bride to be handling this in the hotel lobby, because the employee at the desk was unwilling to support with the issue and make sure guests had what they needed. The groom then made a call, which resulted in Ariel and Hugo from operations to come to the lobby to address the issue. This is just a reflection of one employee and not the W. I was stressed, so asked Ariel if I could see her dog, and she happily let me. Puppy therapy was much needed!
One of the cocktail hour stations included chorizo empanadas. Due to dietary restrictions, we were not serving pork. Beef empanadas were the substitute. After the ceremony and my dress was bustled, I made it to cocktail hour (at least 15 minutes into it). I found chorizo empanadas. The husband of one of our officiants informed the staff of the issue.
A couple guests shared that the moving of guests from one location to the next was unclear. Guests began arriving while the bridal party was in the halls after photos. Guests were directed to the lobby, which was helpful. However, some guests felt that it wasn’t clearly communicated for when it was time to go upstairs for the ceremony. A guest, who arrived close to the ceremony starting shared that it was unclear which room to go in for the ceremony. The ceremony room door had been closed, because the bridal party was about to lineup for the processional. Since no staff member was in the hall giving direction, a guest entered the bridal party holding room.
Communication between the venue, band, and parents (who paid for the event) as different aspects of the event happened could have been better, as my parents missed the groom and me singing on stage with the band and father of the groom missed the cake cutting.
Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding venue. It was so convenient having great facilities to have everything all...
Read moreSituated on the west bank of the Hudson, the W is 27 storeys tall, surrounded by residential units, a few offices, and the long tree-lined Esplanade. The area feels safe and I felt fine going down late at night with my camera to photograph the NYC skyline. There are parks nearby including a small well-kept kid's park.
The hotel lobby is not particularly imposing, but check-in and out was efficient. Cups for the welcome drink were in short supply, but this seems to be a trend in the W's I've visited. The Bliss store and spa is connected to the lobby.
We were upgraded to a Fantastic Suite which was Fantastic since we were a family. The room was well-maintained, and warm enough to lounge around in PJs despite it being winter. The balcony is small but with the constant wind blowing in from the Hudson you are unlikely to want to sit there, especially in winter. The view, as has been mentioned countless times, is Fantastic, and can be appreciated through the windows of both the living room and bedroom.
The living room has a long countertop/sink which extends to the desk which serves well as a mini-kitchenette. Our plan did not include breakfast but 2 blocks up a not-too-steep hill is Washington St which has many decent restaurants and small stores. The bedroom was tight but had a king bed. We had an accessible room so we can't really comment on the bathroom though it was more than sufficient for our needs. Soundproofing was a little bit of an issue - despite the very heavy door, conversations could be heard from the passage.
This being our first visit to NYC/Hoboken, we spent most of our time out of our room. As such, we did not patronise the hotel facilities, and cannot comment. Likewise we did not have much need to call on the staff except for simple things. There is no hotel restaurant but there is room service which we did not use.
The PATH station is about 10mins walk, 5 if you walk fast, along the river which is very pleasant and feels safe even at night. We also explored a small area around the hotel and Washington St and found all the necessities like food, groceries etc. PATH trains take about 10-15 mins (including wait time) to reach the first station in NYC, and run frequently, feel safe and are clean. We did not have issues getting a train even during rush hour.
I must say that this seems to be a hotel for the well-heeled and almost like a getaway spot for the weekend. Well-coiffed "beautiful" people were constantly passing us in the lobby. Our little family with two young kids felt a little out of place :). Nonetheless, we were always greeted at the lobby, doors opened for us and we were made welcome.
We enjoyed our stay, and the upgrade. Despite the added travelling time, the W Hoboken is a very reasonable choice while...
Read moreWhile we always loved staying at the W when we had plans in the city and likewise recommended same to friends and relatives coming to metro area, it unfortunately has lost its luster. W promotes itself as modern "luxury" or luxury liberated, but our recent stay (w/e 2/15) was anything but luxurious. The hotel does disclose on its website that it is in the process of remodeling public areas and rooms, so we expected diminished access or perhaps limited room choice. We did not expect a deteriorated room and non-existent luxury. We asked for a room on an upper floor and the W did deliver a twelfth-floor accommodation. Regrettably, however, the room would not meet even the most generous definition of luxury. ||The desk chair was completely abraded, the round lounge chair by window had both tears and stains, the shower mirrors were de-silvered and as I went to take a shower, I realized the bathroom had none of its previously offered/ expected toiletries (shower cap and its other "vanity" items). I add that on another occasion (in the immediate 'post-pandemic period') we likewise had no toiletries, but on that occasion wrote it off to pandemic aftermath. Since this was a repeat occurrence well beyond pandemic turmoil, when I called the whatever whenever line reporting the absence of shower cap and such, I expressly asked if the hotel was no longer providing same or if we had to expressly request same before arrival. I was assured that was not the case. It seems it was just a repeat failure by both housekeeping and any supervisor. As noted, we acknowledge the hotel disclosed it was renovating, but it’s hard to imagine they let all the rooms deteriorate to the level we encountered before remodeling. Presumably, the remodel starts with the rooms in the worst condition so begs the question: this was the best the W had to offer? The room (booked through W Hotel not a 3rd party) did not come with a disclaimer or a “deterioration discount” rate. ||Consequently, it was a very poor representation of the “luxury” brand despite luxury brand price. On the positive side, the whatever whenever staff was pleasant when we spoke, and they did promptly dispatch someone to the room with the missing items so we could get ready. The server who brought room service was also a bright spot with his welcoming smile and attitude, although the in-room dining menu was lack-luster. Perhaps the W will reclaim its pre-pandemic luxury-state post-renovation, but until then, it is a disappointment...
