I went to Indianapolis this past week and decided to stay at the Fort Harrison Inn. I had the King bed with sun porch room. Room 220. The bed is a standard flippable mattress so it is not a plush mattress. I like a harder bed so that was fine. It was quiet and wonderful to be able to read in the morning with plenty of Natural light. I don't watch TV so the TV was not of interest to me. There is no closet but a beautiful antique Dresser/ Wardrobe with plenty of room for your clothes. There are three chairs to sit in. There is another TV in the sunroom that's a little bit smaller in size.
The bathroom was lovely and had not just a regular shower but also enough room for a body shower as well. The shower valve is American Standard pressure balanced so if you don't know how to work it have the staff show you how.
THIS HOTEL IS QUIET. If You're an older person like I am, You will like the quiet. There are trails that you can walk. The Thai restaurant on the corner of Otis Avenue right up the street is FANTASTIC, with 3 generations of family working there. We ate there twice. Cafe Audrey which is right there on the base just a block from the Thai restaurant was also excellent.
The staff was Wonderful (shout out to Misty) and the breakfast in the morning was good, and satisfying. Coffee was delicious.
This is the kind of place you go If you like quiet and want to sit and rock on the front porch and read you can do that. They have a nice library with a bright light if you want to read in the library. This is an old hotel that has a lot of charm. I also was there during the heat wave where temperatures got up to 110° and there was no loss of air conditioning.
My only complaint is that I wish people would learn how to shut a door quietly and that goes for ANY hotel. People walk out of the door and the door slams and you can hear it slamming for two floors. This is not the Hotel's fault. It's the lack of consideration in our country now. If you're looking for a quiet, comfortable place to stay in Indianapolis, I would highly recommend this! Planning to come back...
Read moreThis past week the wife and I stayed at the hotel as we have many times in the past. We checked in with the reservation that we had made and were given the room card. We went to the room and dropped all of our baggage so that we could visit our son who lives 20 minutes from the hotel. My wife got a call stating that we were placed in the wrong room and that they wanted to transfer our baggage which my wife agreed to. When my wife told me what had happened I told her to immediately call the hotel that because I had a firearm I was reluctant to let anyone else move our baggage. When I got to the hotel I got one of the luggage room carts and immediately went to the room where we had been placed only to discover we were already locked out of said room, imagine my rage. I remained calm and let the desk let us in the room so we could collect our belongings and were transferred just down the hall to a room that was so small your knees were against the shower enclosure when using the commode and your arm was bumping the door when you were standing at the sink. This was nothing like the rooms that we were familiar with when staying at the hotel in the past. Next year the wife and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and we planned friends and family from Ohio to stay at the hotel to share that celebration with us. I can tell you that after this experience we will not be returning to the hotel, period. Such a shame to treat returning customers in...
Read moreReading other reviews, I'm annoyed at the term "old". Hello? It is an historic property -- and a well-maintained one at that. Don't know how to appreciate this type of stay? Go stay somewhere trendy and "fresh". Add roughly $25/night in taxes to any quoted room rate. Free parking (striping of lot not complete but in progress) and generous free breakfast hours 7 - 9:30 (serving waffles, scrambled eggs, meat, potatoes, cereal/oatmeal/toast, yogurt). It was our privilege to have a quiet stay on a busy holiday weekend. Multi-generational trip with a 'puppy' who was previously untested in public setting. Pet room 132 offered a roomy bathroom. Pullout sofa wasn't the most comfortable seating but it did allow 5 of us to congregate indoors. Nearness to dumpsters would make this a bad room to occupy on garbage day. Due to proximity of parked vehicles car alarms were an unwelcome reality. Zig-Zag hallway to Room 200 & 202 was fun and felt secluded. The L-shaped sun porch was a blessing as oversized furniture in 200 made the main room feel tight. Likely would rebook 202 which seemed roomier even with a smaller porch. Furniture/TV set up seemed to dismiss idea of opening door between the units so we didn't inquire. We took advantage of nearby trails and missed out on some interactive features that we needed to have fit into day 1 of our stay as they were closed the rest...
