The Peacock House in Lubec surpassed our high expectations (which were based on many glowing reviews!). We spent 3 nights with MaryBeth and Jim, and even with a full house they were incredible hosts. We have stayed in many B&Bs and it is such a delight to meet proprietors who love what they do, and go above and beyond in making their guests comfortable. The house was not only beautiful, but spotlessly clean. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a magnificent bed, perfectly outfitted in gorgeous linens. Each day we enjoyed an extraordinary breakfast served to us by Jim and Marybeth after it was freshly prepared. We enjoyed pancakes, breakfast burritos and an apple baked dish all to die for! And those were only the main courses; each breakfast was accompanied by juice, coffee/tea and a unique and tasty first course. The common rooms were welcoming and included a sun filled room where coffee and tea were available as well as a refrigerator for guest use. Wine and water glasses were available for guest use also. A library room was full of books and games, and the front room contained a piano and other instruments. The garden full of flowers and birds was lovely. The location is very easy to find and a stone's throw from local restaurants, a ferry to Eastport, and the International bridge to Campobello Island, which we will visit when we return.
As a final note relevant to traveling during 2020, we were particularly grateful to the care and effort that MaryBeth and Jim extended to provide such a nice experience. We stayed at another B&B in Maine earlier this summer that involved staying in our room exclusively when we were at the inn (breakfast left outside the door , and eaten with plastic utensils on a TV tray in our room). In contrast, with appropriate face coverings and distance, The Peacock House experience included chatting with the owners and other guests along with a delicious full breakfast served to each pair of guests at well spaced tables in the first floor...
Read moreEven though we live in a quaint fishing village on the coast of Maine, we wanted to see more of our state and decided to visit Lubec. The Peacock House popped up on the blog of a woman who has traveled the world and her review was extremely favorable, so we settled on that for our B&B and are so happy that we did! Pulling up in front of the Peacock House, even in the shoulder season when the gardens were just starting to show their form, it was clear that we had found a gem. We were justified in that first impression when we walked through the door into a most lovely entryway with fresh tulips and spacious, common rooms fanning out in front of us. Marybeth and Jim, the gracious innkeepers, greeted us at the door with welcoming smiles. The common areas were beautifully and comfortably appointed, decorated with detailed attention to artwork and decor. The books and CDs in the library held something for everyone, the sun room and patio were delightful places to sit and relax with a cup of tea. We stayed in the Summer Room with its cozy bed and soft linens. It was a small room in which, each morning, we woke up to a view of the front garden and fountain, an expansive vista of the Bay of Fundy and the promising outline of the bridge to Campobello International Park. The view was not the only thing to which we looked forward each morning, as we discovered that breakfast was an elegant treat not to be missed. The first morning’s breakfast began with warmed, sliced bananas bathed in a syrup of honey and butter and garnished with MaryBeth and Jim’s homemade granola. The popovers and homemade lemon curd the next day did not disappoint either! Our hosts were attentive but not intrusive and we hope to make this an annual trip to Lubec and the lovely and sumptuous...
Read moreUnder new ownership, the Peacock continues to please guests and is a perfect choice for this scenic area of Maine. Enjoy unique and extremely comfortable well appointed rooms, plus an outstanding breakfast each morning to start your day. Campobello Island is right across the bridge in Canada and is worth a trip to FDR's family summer home. In addition to the house tour, we loved the extraordinary storytellers who host "Tea with Eleanor" in Hubbard Cottage next door, tickets are first come first serve at the visitors center. All of this is free as per the charter of the only international park in the world (U.S. and Canada run jointly). Take the time to drive around the island (it's only 3 x 9 miles in area) for scenic stops and local delicious food. Return to the Peacock, for warm oven-baked cookies and a drink on the outdoor or indoor porch, just perfect for chatting with guests and Mary Beth, inn keeper extraordinaire. She can recommend interesting and varied restaurants in Lubec, where local delicious seafood choices abound! Spacious living room and library plus all amenities offer plenty of room to rest, relax and unwind. We loved our stay and...
