We took this tour last Sunday, June 26 at 5:15PM. This is a relatively small boat (6 people plus the captain). We expected a tour that was going out to the Bay of Fundy (like the ones that depart from Campobello island, CA). Yet, we did stay inside the bay that is between Maine and Campobello, from the Lubec port to St. Georges lighthouse. We did not see any whales during the 2 hours that lasted the tour. The tour is more to "explore" attractions inside the area of the bay of Campobello, Eastport and Lubec than a whale watching tour like the ones that you can take in Campobello or in other ports in Maine (like the one located in Bar Harbor that we did before). The captain will show you interesting places along the coast and you may see seals and many gulls but the probabilities of finding whales would be limited by the range of this tour. It is true that whales are easier to find in late July and August than in June, but to find whales you must go out to open sea (like many other whale watching tours that we had done before, in NY, NJ, Maine and in our return back to NY, we did stop in NH (Rye) and we took a serious whale watching tour. We saw 2 Humpback whales and 1 Findback whale, many dolphins and other sea mammals (for more or less the same price we did pay in Lubec). Anyway, I would not recommend this tour since it focus is more about "exploring" the Lubec bay and the coast than looking for whales. If you are in Lubec and want to see whales, cross the bridge to Campobello and take one of the whale watching tours that go out to the...
Read moreToday started at 6:00 am to catch a 7:45 am boat departure with plan to see whales, seals, dolphins, Bald Eagles, the lighthouse area we walked yesterday-the walking area to get to it is submerged in water at high tide today; ride through it and experience The Old Sows Pen (huge whirlpools where ingoing and outgoing tides intersect. Amazing 2 hour trip aboard The Lorna Dione Small boat with 6 passengers and our Captain Ralph.
Man did Captain Ralph deliver !!! We saw 3 species of whales up close, heard their blow and got great pictures. Riding through the cut at lighthouse (we walked yesterday) was amazing and the whirlpools were thrilling. Captain Ralph made sure we got the whirlpool experience, including turning off motors and us going around...
Read moreWe went out with Captain Ralph yesterday evening, and the trip was great! Carol was helpful and responsive during booking and confirmation, and she called us the day of the trip ahead of time to let us know the weather looked good for us to head out. She also gave our dog, Dewey, a bone before we got on the boat with Captain Ralph! Once out on the water, Captain Ralph shared really interesting information - about the history of the area as well as facts about the tides and the natural surroundings. He pointed out lots of wildlife (bald eagles and their nests, porpoises and whales!) and was really fun to talk to during the trip. We would definitely recommend Downeast Charter Boat Tours to anyone looking for an...
