A nice hotel with a poor check in experience for myself.
I was traveling for work and I am a state government employee. I've never had problems at any hotel securing the state government rate with my ID and even called ahead to ensure my particular ID would be fine, which the hotel said it would be.
Before arriving at the hotel, I was notified that I was being upgraded to a Studio room which was great because complimentary upgrades have been few and far between this year (screenshot provided of the upgrade).
The bad: I arrived at the hotel and the person who checked me in was very un-accommodating and was refusing to accept my ID. I explained that I called ahead to confirm with the hotel that my ID was sufficient and they said yes, and he still was not accepting it. Even his coworker who was helping someone else said it was acceptable but he was still being stubborn about it. I showed my approved travel request and my documents from my work and still wasn't enough. Then I was getting ready to call my travel office and he said to give him the number to call and confirm so I did. He gave me a room key and I went upstairs to call the travel office anyway to get this straightened out.
At some point, I was "downgraded" back to a standard room, which was incredibly disappointing as I opened the door. I called my travel office and they called the hotel directly and got it straightened out. So after all of that I lost my upgrade and had to deal with a stubborn employee making a difficult situation out of something that had always been a smooth experience in 4 years of business travel. I didn't really need an upgrade since I was traveling by myself, but it's still nice to get one. I asked why I had lost the upgrade and another front desk employee just told me there weren't any available, which I found hard to believe but I didn't bother with it at that point.
The ok: The location is on the east side of downtown Minneapolis. It's about a 10 minute walk to the nearest tram station. There are not a ton of restaurants nearby, and it's a bit car busy. Other than that the locations is fairly good.
The good: The rooms are nice and updated, and have all the amenities needed for a week long business trip. My rate included breakfast, but Platinum and above members get breakfast at the restaurant in lieu of no lounge. You get a choice of 3 items, and any coffee with your breakfast. There was an omelet of the day, a waffle, and a steel cut oats. I went with the omelet twice, which was very good. The waffle, however, was not. It was the equivalent of the waffles you make with the waffle maker at the complimentary breakfast at a Fairfield or Residence Inn, and then they drove it to this hotel. It wasn't hot, and it came with nothing else. The staff there were very welcoming and attentive. Overall most of my interactions with the staff were positive at this hotel aside from the check in experience.
I think the positives of the breakfast and the quality of the base room were good enough to outweigh the awful check in experience, but I think I will try some other Marriott's in the MSP area before coming back here.
Update after 2 weeks: this hotel never credited my stay. I had to contact Marriott and they manually...
Read moreThis is such a warm, inviting venue. From the moment you walk in and see the fireplace, great spots to work, network or hang out...to the comfort of the room. I was in town on business, and it was incredible how all of the services really made my getting out the door each morning easier. Little details in the room like the sitting nook, throw blanket and comfortable robe make coming back from a long day of work so enjoyable. I was very impressed with all of the individuals who provided me service and made certain that little things like a healthy "to-go" breakfast were easily accessible. Valet parking is quite convenient, and self parking is a little more difficult. However, there is street parking overnight, and access to a few parking lots on the surrounding streets. I happen to be staying at this hotel during a Vikings game, and found that the location is quite conveniently just out of the major pedestrian flow to and from the stadium. Although it is next door to a brewery, my room overlooked their back patio, there is absolutely no sound that made it to my room. The blackout shades and excellent construction truly make for a sound night of sleep. I was running just a little behind my first morning after arriving, and popped into the restaurant to see if I could get a small breakfast to go. For around $13 I quickly received a lovely yogurt parfait and tea, that almost instantly appeared after I ordered it. It was a perfect example of the way the hotel service surprises and delights you. Such a refreshing shift from what can be true at other properties, where your needs can even seem like a burden. It is not the fault of the property, but one of the main roads next to them is under construction. I did notice that even though the road was torn up and primarily gravel, it was very handy that a person could still drive on it and not have to take an extra detour around a block further away. It was also an easy 20 minute drive from the airport, and if one's primary business was int he downtown area, it would be very convenient to Uber or Lyft and walk to some of the key buildings in the Elliot Park area. This really is such a great property to stay at, I can't recommend it enough. It is not easy to combine modern simplicity with a hospitable warmth, and the Elliot Park Hotel has done just that. My only regret is that I didn't have one more day to pull out a book, order a glass of wine and sit by the fire which is so beautifully located in the...
Read moreI had a business trip that was hosted at this location. Looking at the hotel prior to the trip, I anticipated a quality hotel with a comfortable stay.
Unfortunately, this was not the case and continues to be an issue a month later. Upon check-in, they lost the authorization for my room and stated that I needed to pay a different amount than the original confirmation. After going back and forth about the authorization, the person at the counter finally said they would need a card for a deposit and would resolve the issue with the manager the following day.
The next day, they were able to locate the original authorization for my room and agreed to the original terms as stated in the confirmation.
Later in the day, I started to receive random transaction notices from my bank on the provided card for the deposit that the hotel could not explain. They then stated they had no reasoning for the charges and assured me that I would not be charged those amounts.
Upon checkout, they confirmed that no additional charges would be needed and that the room rate would be charged to the business card on record from my company.
Almost a month later, I am still receiving charges from the hotel. I attempted to contact the hotel for an explanation. Once again, they had no explanation for the attempted charges and stated they would need to contact their accounting department to look into the situation and call me back the following day before 10 AM. That time came and went. I called the hotel again around 11:30 AM. After being redirected multiple times, I was finally able to get through to someone. They then transferred me to the accounting department’s voicemail without asking for any information or details about the issue. It is now mid-afternoon, and I have received no contact. I have attempted to call multiple times and continue to receive only the automated system, with no ability to reach an actual person.
I will be processing an affidavit with my financial institution regarding the fraudulent charges attempted by the Elliot Park Hotel.
The only upside to the stay was that the front valet person was very nice and helped me...
