This was the absolute worst treatment by management I’ve ever experienced while camping. Full disclosure, I did make a small mistake but their escalation and the way they handled the mistake was ridiculous. My wife and I decided to camp in Charleston for her 50th birthday for a week. We’ve stayed here multiple times with no issues. My wife makes all of our reservations for our camping trips so I don’t receive the emails with park rules, etc. I decided I would surprise my wife by asking her family to come to town to surprise her for her 50th. Several of her family members camp as well, some don’t. For this particular occasion, there were 2 other groups of people camping with us (3 total sites if you include ours). I planned for the 13 people (including the 6 people camping there) to meet up at the campground so we can do a quick surprise and then head to dinner. People came from Florida, Pennsylvania, and the Greenville area. Everyone met in front of the office (including the ones who paid to camp there) and walked over to our site for the surprise. We left immediately after the surprise for dinner. On the way to dinner, the manager, Jackie, decided she would call my wife and immediately escalate the situation. She didn’t ask if we were aware of the policy for paying for extra guests, she just decided to basically yell at my wife. Keep in mind that my wife had no idea any of this was going to happen and I personally was not aware of the guest policy. That’s my fault, but Jackie decided it was appropriate to yell at my my wife. Even after it was explained, she continued with her poor attitude.
Oh, but wait, it gets better. That was Friday. We kind of laughed it off and had a few laughs at Jackie’s expense due to the way she handled that. Saturday night, my brother in law just happened to check their credit card statement and he had an extra charge for almost $200. Long story short, Jackie decided that it was appropriate to charge my brother in law for 22 additional people. There was no call to say she was going to charge his account for anything extra - it was just charged. When my brother in law confronted the guy in the office, Jeff, he had the most ridiculous smug attitude about it. I understand if Jeff couldn’t do anything to fix the situation, but his poor attitude about it caused it to escalate. He refused to give us contact information for Jackie or their owner. Keep in mind when reading this that we had 13 people at our site for about 15 minutes, 6 of which were paying guests. Jackie eventually called my brother in law and when asked how they came up with 22 people, her comment was “Well, it looked like 22 people so that’s what we charged your card”. That is absolutely ridiculous customer service. The money was eventually refunded after they spoke, but that should have never been charged in the first place without a quick conversation. They have a responsibility with peoples credit cards and should take the at responsibility serious.
After this, my wife and I stayed for several more days and not once did anyone on their management team call or stop by to apologize to us for their actions. We did however, pay for additional guests the days following. Originally they told my wife it was $25/car, the next day it was around $9/person, and the third day they said there was no charge. So, what is the policy?
The way Jackie and Jeff decided to handle this situation was 100% ridiculous and could have been handled a little better. I understand if they called my wife to simply remind us of the policy or to ask how many guests we had so they can charge the card. That would have been no problem at all. But to call my wife and yell at her and then to turn around and charge my brother in law $200 for some random made up number of people is not ok.
In addition, they refused to give us the owners name and number. I would still like to speak with the owner about this situation. Never again will I step foot on this property. The management is poor and Jackie’s lack of leadership shows with her office...
Read moreYou arrive with normal vacay excitement and hopes of having fun seeing the beautiful lake with water bicycles, paddle boards, kayaks and what looks like will be a fun vacation! BUT THEN.... you meet the staff. You know you're paying a good price for your stay there so SURELY you are going to receive the amazing hospitality they advertise all over KOA Websites. NOT AT THIS ONE...incredibly rude staff that are essentially untrained unprofessionals anxious to use the power they have being a privately owned property to constantly moniter all you are doing from swimming, paddle boarding and bedtime...which they refer to as "quiet time"...but you seriously might as well go to bed even though you're adults on vacation. If you happen to still be up after 10:00 PM....they will seek you out to shut down any fun you are having. Anything above a whisper or talking is loud noise to them and for goodness sakes...do not play music. We were told we were loud as f!%#! and to shut down f%#!ing Now!! We could not believe how rude this guy was. We were inside an RV by the way! So make sure you are in bed by 10pm little campers or you are in big trouble. But when you think okay...we will still make the best of this trip...this guy chases down my daughter in his golf cart when she arrived to pick up her two pre-schoolers that were with us for a few hours. She had no idea what was going on when the guy blocked her with his golf cart, went to her car and abruptly OPENED HER CAR DOOR and yelled at her to leave the Park. She told him to get away from her car and she was picking up her children. He actually told her no and to get back in her car and leave immediately, which then my daughter called over to me to help her. He accused her of speeding to our cabin and instead of being professional and explaining anything, he made a horrible scene hastily yelling. So unnecessary. By the way...it's near impossible to speed through the camp with all the turns and camp sites. She was not speeding and did absolutely nothing wrong. But he wouldn't let things settle and called the unprofessional manager Jackie over who showed up in HER golf cart and proceeded to use profanity telling my daughter to get the f#!__ out, yet they had her blocked in. They seemed to enjoy fueling a situation making everyone angry. My daughter argued she was not speeding and the whole thing was a lie and ridiculous and that she was trying to leave but they were blocking her. The 3rd guy in one of the golf carts hastily moves his cart while yelling at her and came inches away from running over another person in our group as he was too busy yelling at us and wasn't paying attention to where he was going. So we load up the crying pre-schoolers they scared and my daughter leaves. But that wasn't enough folks...it gets better... they called the police who stopped my daughter at the entrance gate and were told by the lovely KOA manager Jackie to give her a trespassing notice stating she is never allowed back at that KOA ever again. LOLOL This really happens at this place. The reviews that mention this are not kidding. They do not care how they make you feel. They do not care if you stay or go or ever come back again. Sure...it's a beautiful campground...Just be prepared and know they are no joke, they have very strict rules and it feels like your parents sent you to kids camp! Beware of the yellow shirts driving...
Read moreCampground offers RV, cabin, and tent sites. As soon as you arrive to check-in, you are given a handbook with all the info and escorted (hospitality!) to your site. The convenient store has everything you can possibly need during your camping trip and prices are reasonable (not over priced). They have daily activities you can participate in if you’d like to. During our stay they had waterslide, movie night, coke floats, wagon ride to see the plantation and hear the history of it, water balloon toss, and more. KOA has a swimming pool and a man-made lake for fishing (catch and release), kayaking, paddle boating, and etc. You can rent all this there for reasonable-good price. I’m glad they don’t overcharge! We rented the paddle boats (seats 4 people) for $10 per hour. They have clean and well-maintained restrooms and showers. There is an outlet near the shower if you need to charge your cell phone. There is also a 1 mile hiking path. Just across the street from the campground, they have KOA Fun Park which has arcade games, race car, and miniature golf (2 free golfing with every site purchase). KOA will text you with info and also text you before they close to see if you need anything (which they will bring to your campsite for you. Service is free.) If you need anything or have questions, you can text them and they reply promptly. The stay is minimum 2 nights. Every site has a picnic table, grill, and fire pit. We loved this place and had so much fun! Highly recommend this place especially for families with children.
Stores and restaurants are all conveniently nearby. Isle of Palms Charleston Beach is only 15 minutes away. Recommend trying the Dole ice cream if you go there. They cut out the pineapple and pour pineapple yogurt inside. Yum!
There are KOA campgrounds at several locations and we have only been to this one at Mt. Pleasant/Charleston. Highly recommend this place for camping! Kids and the whole family had so much fun!
(I read some of the negative reviews and thought I can comment from experience. There are employees driving around in golf carts incase any one needs anything and to pick up your trash if you’d like. I was warned not to go into the lake because there are alligators but we didn’t see any. As for employees… yea they aren’t really friendly. They do their work but not as personable. If you are a hard-core camper wanting just nature experience, this place is probably not the place. But this campground is fun for...
