Clean and a good value. Very close to two St. Charles trolley line stops.
Breakfast: Decent but not great, but the second morning the oatmeal was cold and the mixed berries still frozen. Consists of the usual pastry mix, a waffle station, some type of hot eggs, some type of hot breakfast potato, yogurt, cereal, juice, tea, and coffee. Better than average selection of toppings for cereal/yogurt/oatmeal. The juices are often warm because they're only placed in the fridge that morning instead of the night before.
Room: ours was in pretty good shape. Nothing noticeably worn out. The bed is memory form and only a touch less comfortable then ours at home. Mini fridge, a second vanity sink separate from the bathroom, Keurig coffee maker. We drove so I brought hydrogen peroxide with us (my go-to cleaner/disinfectant) and sprayed down the sink, tub, phone, light switches, door handles, and TV remote. Nothing bubbled up which is a good sign that they weren't teeming with bacteria, so they do a good job of cleaning.
Noise: There are only 40 rooms on 2 floors so it's a cozy place. It's an older building so solid construction. The walls seem fairly thick but there are a lot of floor squeaks from overhead. The door is well sealed so you don't hear conversations in the hallway (or our fellow guests were just very quiet). We did hear a small dog barking but yappy voices are piercing to begin with and it wasn't that loud. The A/C unit, on a scale from 1-10 (ducted A/C to airport runway), is about a 3.5.
The bulk of the noise comes from outside the hotel. The windows are poorly insulated against sound. You'll hear the streetcars go by every few minutes (10 minutes in between but going in both directions) which is a combination of a whine and a grinding sound, that lasts for 2-3 seconds, 24 hours a day. It's not really loud but if you're a light sleeper it may wake you. The usual sirens in a busy city. The restaurant next door, if you're on that side of the building, can really get rocking and it's clearly audible. Ear plugs are your best friend when traveling (or always, if your spouse snores).
Parking: included in the rate which makes this hotel an absolute bargain. The vast majority of hotels in NOLA charge anywhere from $30-$60/day for parking and, in some, valet is your only option. This hotel has a small lot in back with about 15 spaces. If you score a spot in the lot, you get a clicker for access to the secured lot. Except that it's only secured against car access. It's actually ridiculously easy to walk into the lot, so of course, don't leave valuables in your vehicle.
All things considered, I'd stay here again. It's a nice, safe, quiet (compared to the Quarter) neighborhood and convenient to local...
Read moreHotel staff was very rude and condescending.
Editing to add, I checked out recently. When I wrote the original review I was still at the hotel and I didn’t want to leave any details out. When we got to the hotel, the front desk person was rude and condescending. She constantly repeated things and spoke so slowly, as if we couldn’t understand simple instructions. She even made me confirm I know which way left is. The rest of the trip she gave us nasty looks and stared us down every time we walked through the lobby.
When we got up to our floor, a member in my party read the room number wrong and tried to open the wrong room. The door opened (even though it was the wrong room!!) luckily the inside lock was on and that clued us into the fact it was the wrong room.
We got to our room and it smelled like alcohol. There was a wet red stain, and a cork leftover under the dresser. Also the sink and counter inside the bathroom was covered in water.
The first day of our stay we had the breakfast, which was pretty good. However I told the staff their yogurt was expired by a day. They cleaned out the expired yogurt, but the next day they put in more expired yogurt, as well as moldy cheese in the food selection.
We were told when we called in that they would validate our parking for two cars. When we checked into the hotel, the clerk argued with us on that for a while before they agreed to honor their word. When she did validate it I told her the time for the ticket wasn’t right, that it wasn’t enough time for my parking. She argued with me and wouldn’t hear me out at all. I had to pay for my parking even though she told me I wouldn’t.
The staff was rude to other guests. I will not return. When I checked out, I looked at my receipt and saw I was charged $2.37 multiple times for a “Tourism Fee” which was not posted anywhere. I assume this was for asking for suggestions on local restaurants. It looks like it could be a lovely hotel...
Read moreThe staff were the thing that stood out the most for me, but it wasn’t the only reason we enjoyed our stay. We came back to the inn one evening with leftovers, but forgot that we’d need a fork, so we stopped and asked the front desk person, who kindly went and grabbed a couple for us. On the last night of our stay, we needed some change to purchase a couple bottled waters at 10:00 at night, and instead of changing our $5 bill, the wonderful staff member gave us a couple waters. Every time we came in or out of the front door, we were greeted so warmly, and when we had questions (silly tourist kind), they went out of their way to help us. I just hope the management there knows how wonderful their staff is. Our room was clean and comfy, and our beds were too, which is not always the case, and we never heard any noise, ever (and we stayed 3 nights). Most of the time when I stay in a room, I have to use ear plugs because I am so sensitive to noise. It was just remarkable how quiet the inn was. You can see the city trolley pick up (RTA) from the front of the inn, and it only costs $1.50 for a ride, or $3 for 24 hours (pro tip: go to the website and you can purchase your fair in advance and just hop right on, otherwise you’ll need exact change). But do know that the trolley can get packed, like standing room only, at times. Also, we took a guided city tour and learned that the garden district (where the st. Charles is) is a favorite district for the celebs, it’s amazing how many own homes there. Plus, if you’ve never been, you’ll find the garden district to be quite lovely, very lush in beautiful plant life, and lots of trees line the streets. So yah, if you’re looking for a great place to stay, in a great part of NOLA, stay at the...
