A few times each year, I go online and find somewhere with a relatively cheap hotel room for what it is, and go there. I didn't go with the cheapest this time, as it was fairly reasonable at this hotel and I wasn't going to pass up going to the coast instead of somewhere in the valley. My expectations were definitely exceeded staying here. It wasn't perfect, but the view and location just about are. I wouldn't have expected a hotel that is across the street from the beach to have this great of a view, but it does. The lighthouse on the cape is the crowning jewel of an already spectacular view.
The hotel itself is very nicely remodeled, and you can tell the staff mostly cares here. There were a few things that could have been improved - the sheet on top of the blanket was very ratty, the shower isn't great, and the walls are super thin - but most everything was great. It was laid out nicely, the way the parking area was integrated was smart. The location is great - I especially appreciated that I didn't have to get on 101 to get all the way to Yaquina Bay, and it's right on the state park, which makes for easy access to the beach. Oh, the internet was overloaded a couple times during my stay, and was kicking me off; that could definitely be improved. My biggest issue was losing a few hours of sleep to the neighbors (yelling, hitting things, slamming the door, barking dog, screaming baby, they had it all); the walls are very thin, as mentioned. I thought they were checking out after my second night here, but I wanted to be sure so I went and asked at the front desk. She acted like no one has ever had an issue with noise, and it was the most bizarre question ever asked to find out if the next room was checking out that day. I could have demanded a different room or something, but instead I was trying to not cause any problems and just make sure it was taken care of. Not sure where I went wrong there to get that kind of response.
I also got three different times for check-out. One said 11am PST, which we aren't in, so I assume they meant 11am PDT, and then the door in the room said 12pm (I guess that's two times, since it would be the same as 11am PST if I'm thinking correctly). Not sure which is correct, but it got me moving a little faster.
Anyway, again, this is a great location with a great view and nice rooms, and I'll...
Read moreFirst and foremost, every staff experience we had was warm and friendly. At the very least, we were made to feel welcome, and the staff were ready to accommodate.
Overall, the experience was fine, but I can't say that I wasn't a bit disappointed. The top floor ocean view was a nice touch, but the “balcony“ wasn't large enough to place a chair. The King Bed was comfy and the sheets were great. The carpets and bathtub needed updating and the living room ceiling had a big black splotch from water damage or something. Too easy to paint over to exist at a BW Plus, so this lost them a whole star alone. They didn't have proper drinking glasses either, which I thought was odd. We could get them via room service, though.
We ordered room service twice and they messed up both times, but were very apologetic and did their best to make it right. We left our dishes out in front of our door at 8/9 and they were still there at 10 the next morning when we got breakfast, which means they don't have people walking the halls very regularly. Take that for what it's worth. Low staffing, probably.
The food was pretty good, except the crispy duck fat potatoes are apparently "not supposed to be crispy", so temper your expectations. As a chef, I find this absolutely ridiculous. You can prepare a poached potato, roasted potato, braised, baked or fried...regardless, if you call a potato "crispy" [Webster's def: appealingly crunchy] on the menu, it should be as advertised.
Halibut fish and chips were meaty, juicy, and crunchy and the house made tartar sauce was excellent. Dungeness Louie salad was also delicious. Big chunks of crab and a creamy, addictive dressing.
Breakfast potatoes (medallions) were delightful and the ham + green chilli omelette was good. Chx apple Sausage was good. Bacon tasted great, but was cold. The fruit bowl was laughable. For $8 we got a small bowl of unripe melon (cantaloupe + honeydew) and some sour grapes. Lesson learned there. At that price, we should've seen a fresh strawberry, blueberries and kiwi fruit.
Do yourself a favor and order coffee with room service, or go out for it. The room coffee is bad, especially combined with the notorious Oregon Coast tap water.
Not bad, but better places for less dough. I expect more from BW Plus. Unless they make some changes, I won't be back to this...
Read moreI’ll start out with the positive first, upon arrival the front desk staff was amazing, I am a best western employee myself and the lady was very kind. We got a room with a beach view. The room was very clean and the view was amazing! However, I originally booked my stay for 19-21, but we decided to see if we could switch check in to the 18th instead. I called the front desk and the lady who answered the phone was very nice however, I got transferred to whom I believe was the GM. Immediately when he answered the phone he was annoyed and said” well did you check online. That should’ve been your first move” very rudely. I then informed him I wanted to make sure my Employee discount was on the added night that is why I didn’t look online I wanted to speak with an employee. He proceeded to act as if what I was asking with my reservation was an inconvenience to him. He claimed he didn’t see my reservation even though the front desk employee already had pulled it up and confirmed it. Basically dismissing my reservation because I asked to extend a day. Instead of giving up I gave him my confirmation number and then he “finally” found it. Once he added the day instead of telling me the additional charge he said “ okay done” and hung up. I then had to call the 1800 best western number to double check my reservation and get the new total. Since I work at a best western myself I was completely shocked by how I was treated as a guest. My advice would be, to not treat your guests as an inconvenience because you have to press a couple buttons on a reservation screen. and to anyone who wants to call and ask any questions I guess you need to do it online so you don’t inconvenience the staff. Kind of ironic that in the room he has a paper saying if your stay wasn’t a 10/10 he’ll fix it. But he was the reason our stay wasn’t a 10/10 due to the customer service I received by him I would give him a 0/10 I hope no was has the same experience I did moving...
