The hotel structure itself is a nice escape from Midland/Odessa. Its location is a grand juxtaposition from its surroundings. Driving to the hotel is the part where you wish you could blindfold your guests. You drive through an industrial and decrepit part of town with its fair share of abandoned buildings and suspect motels. Depressing. Thankfully, the surrounding area is not an indicator of the design of the hotel. The depressing mood changed pretty quickly as we entered the gorgeous, modern hotel. The front desk staff was excellent. The hotel is very clean with a cool, spacious bar in the lobby. We (wife and I) were lucky to have a competent bartender who knew how to sling drinks. Rooms are great, décor is modern and cool. The M club is great and is typical of a Marriot club, with espresso machine, snacks, etc. The downfall of our experience was the service at the Barrel & Derrick restaurant. The awkwardness starts with the name and continues from there. We were seated at our table and the hostess remarked, “surely they won’t forget about you here,” as we were seated right next to the bar and near a waiter station. That odd statement was not a good sign. Yes, we were forgotten about. We were literally about to get up and leave when the waitress showed up. So we stayed, and ordered a couple of drinks and apps. The drinks were like fruit juice. We asked for more alcohol in the drinks. The waitress relayed this to the restaurant bartender to which she replied “they will get more juice.” I guess she didn’t know we were seated right next to the bar. Won’t bore you too much with anymore except to say my burger was like a hockey puck. Rest of the food ranged from OK to excellent (Brussel sprouts were awesome, enough for three people). That’s the problem with service, such a luck of the draw on who is actually serving you. Overall, the service was subpar at the restaurant. We had a similar experience the next morning at the same restaurant where it took 40 minutes to get a horrible egg sandwich. Anyhow, overall, we love the hotel and it has potential to be a great weekend getaway for locals. Honestly, we feel lucky that we have such a nice hotel in the area. If it weren't for the two restaurant experiences, we would have given this an...
Read moreI recently stayed at the Odessa Marriott and was left underwhelmed by several aspects of my visit. I had checked in using the Marriott app and requested a mobile key, as I’ve done at other Marriott properties. However, when I contacted the front desk, I was told I still needed to go in person to provide my ID and credit card — defeating the purpose of mobile check-in. This has never been the case at other Marriott locations.
Upon arrival, check-in was quick, but the front desk agent didn’t mention any hotel amenities or even where the elevators were — I had to ask. It seems like a small thing, but when combined with the confusing parking garage setup, it added to the overall frustration. The garage connects directly to the hotel’s second floor if you park on the third level, which isn’t intuitive. I wasn’t the only one confused — I saw other guests wandering around trying to find their way to the elevators. Better signage and clearer instructions from the staff would go a long way here.
Parking is self-park only — no valet. The hotel advertises Tesla charging stations, but the two in the garage weren’t working, and the three out front were constantly blocked by non-electric vehicles. It’s frustrating that no effort is made to reserve these spots for EVs.
As for the room, it was pretty standard, with nothing particularly memorable — unless you count the issues. Several lights didn’t work, the room needed more thorough cleaning, and the shower had mildew on the floor and heavy scale buildup on the showerhead. Most concerning was the condition of the door — the area around the lock was visibly damaged, as if someone had previously tried to force it open. The secondary security latch was also loose. It’s unacceptable that a room in that condition is still being rented out.
Overall, this stay didn’t meet the standards I’ve come to expect from Marriott. There are some easy fixes that could dramatically improve the guest experience — but unfortunately, they’re currently...
Read moreThe rooms look physically nice and we were excited to finally stay here, however the bed is as hard as a rock and it physically hurt me to lay in it for more than 5 minutes. Literally pain was shooting from my shoulders because of how hard the bed was. There was even a mattress “topper” on it but it was completely flat and kept popping off the edge of the mattress the whole night so I never could sleep because I had wrinkles and bunches under me from the topper being loose.
To top it all off, the smoke alarm flashes a strobe light every 10 seconds, something on the desk flashed BRIGHT every 2-3 minutes, and the air conditioner sounded like a slamming door every single time it kicked on. The thermostat also illuminated the entire room and there is no way to turn the light off, so we had to hang a jacket over it so we could actually darken the room somewhat. The air conditioner also let the room vary between 10-15 degrees at a time before it would kick on/kick off (and it was doing this long before we put the jacket on top FYI) so I was constantly freezing or physically sweating while trying to rest. It’s so bad that at 3:30 am while I am completely exhausted, I am packing up my stuff and leaving because I’d rather sleep in my bed at home where I can actually sleep. No amount of money is worth trying to sleep here-especially the hefty amount we paid to stay here. Keep your money and don’t stay here. Worst bed I’ve laid down on in the last decade-and that’s saying something.
Also, when I reported this, I had a young man at the front desk give me a snobby “mmhmmm” and ask me if I wanted my receipt printed or emailed. He never even offered to try to help or correct anything. Then there were no luggage carts anywhere to be found anywhere in the hotel-security even looked on cameras. So, at 4 am, we were hauling all our stuff out by hand to get out of this awful place. I will NEVER...
