I read the mixed reviews before coming and decided to take a gamble. For a three-start hotel that was only $60/night, it was worth it. Is it dated? Yes, but the price reflects that—even if you pay more. Overall, it was a clean place to stay for a very reasonable rate. We did have to pay an additional $10/day for a pack-and-play crib (the first time I’ve had to pay in 10 years), but again, given the rate received, it wasn’t that big a deal. However, it was the first of many “signs” that management struggles with being in the hospitality industry.
Next, they immediately make you sign a bunch of things attesting you won’t have any guests or visitors at the hotel. As our home base, this felt quite restrictive, even though we had no plans of visitors. They have pickle ball and basketball courts, swimming pool, and pool and fooseball tables, yet the message is you can only play these multi-player attractions with people who came with you. I hated that message, which is, “you can stay here, but don’t bring your friends.” I get that they want to reserve the amenities for people staying at the hotel, but it meant that most of the time the amenities were largely unused. We played in the evening but it got too dark—despite there being flood lighting in the courts, they never bothered to turn them on so we had to quit early (maybe you have to ask them to turn on the lights???)
Then they give you breakfast tickets, which is fine, but again overly formal and gives an inhospitable message, again. The two days we were there, nobody was really monitoring the tickets anyway (you just drop them in a little container), which begs the question of whether or not the whole dog and pony ticket show is even worth it. There’s a big line for the waffles, so I didn’t even bother waiting. Eggs, hash-browns, and sausages, plus yogurt and mini muffins. The lighting in the breakfast area is that terrible fluorescent white, so not cozy or inviting at all. It was hard to get a table both mornings we were there (there was what looks like an additional seating area that was closed off—it wasn’t clear if it was for renovations or safety).
And don’t get me started on the signage. There are signs EVERYWHERE. EV. ER. Y. WHERE! There were 30 signs in the pool area alone. Again, very unwelcoming. We swam the day we left, but the water was noticeably cloudy in the main pool, and they closed down the hot tub for maintenance (various rumors as to why), which was a little disappointing. We even lost a pool toy because we literally couldn’t see the bottom of the pool because of the cloudiness.
The room was very clean, which is obviously the main thing (and the main reason this gets four stars). We loved that we could back the car right up to the door. The room is a bit dated, but comfortable and felt safe, so four stars based on that plus the price is a fair assessment.
Overall, would I stay here again? It was cheap and clean, so probably yes, but given the unwelcoming messages, if I could find a similar option I’d probably give something else a try. If you just need a place to crash for the night that’s clean and safe and don’t really care about taking advantage of any of the amenities, this is a good option. If you’re coming FOR the amenities, temper your...
Read moreI have loved staying at the Red Lion in St. George MANY times over the last couple years. It has been our go-to place for our many visits. Our last stay here was extremely different. I would not be changing my review from a 5 star to a 1 star based on just one poor experience, but our treatment throughout has been so horrible, especially to guests who stay here so often.
We booked one of our usual 2 day visits. We ended up with a toilet that would not flush. We didn't clog it, luckily. We called the front desk and they sent someone into our room to plunge the toilet. The problem persisted so we went to the front desk to let them know. They changed our rooms 7 doors down, both on the bottom floor. We soon found out we had the same problem in this room, so we assumed it was an issue with the whole bottom floor. We did not want to go through changing rooms again. Not to mention it was Thanksgiving weekend and we weren't sure there were even very many rooms available. So we walked outside and into the lobby to use the restroom. When we checked out, we informed the front desk of the problem and let them know it was probably the entire bottom floor plumbing since we had the exact same issue 7 doors down. They apologized and said they would have a manager call us when one was available, which wasn't for a couple of days. A manager called and spoke to my partner, telling him they let out the room again after we informed them it was probably the whole floor, and they had experienced the same issue. My partner was then offered what he thought was a 50% discount. The credit came back to our account as much, much smaller. My partner called to ask why and was told he misunderstood and it was only a 15% around $35. We then received a SECOND call from Red Lion, and called back. The call had no purpose except seemingly to just berate my partner for the mistake. Insisting it was just a 15% and that the whole inconvenience was our fault for using the lobby restroom and not going back to the front desk again, after we had tried to get the problem resolved 3 times already. She was incredibly rude and kept insisting we should've solved the problem on property. We TRIED. We didn't have time to deal with this on this trip. What we didnt expect was for a place we frequent so often to treat us SO poorly and make sure to call us JUST to let us know this was all our fault. It saddens me our family will no longer be staying at our...
Read moreIf this was a Motel 6 or Days Inn I would have given it 3 stars. This place is like a cheap motel with a nice-looking pool and kid-friendly activities attached to it.
We came here on a holiday weekend, so most other places were crazy-priced or booked up. I just wish I had known this was more like an old motel, not a 3-star hotel, so I had more accurate expectations (and probably would have gone somewhere else).
The plus points about this place are they had eggs for breakfast and the bed was comfortable.
However, the first room we were put in looked clean enough though old and a bit run down. Unfortunately, it had a strong fragrance smell that was too overwhelming. At that point, my husband and I were no longer interested in staying here so tried to go back and ask for a refund. We didn't make reservations ahead of time, we just walked in and booked a room not 10 minutes earlier. However, the person at the front desk insisted we would have to pay a $50 cancelation fee. When asking to speak to a manager, there wasn't one there. Instead, they offered to change us to another room.
The second room was similar except there wasn't a strong smell. Though the neighbors, who looked to be there long-term, were smoking right outside the non-smoking rooms. So there was a faint cigarette smell in our room. This room also had a fold-out bed, and when we went to pull it out there were crumbs all over the couch under the cushions. It had not been vacuumed in a while. The shower looked clean enough except there was mold and hair on the bottom of the shower curtain (pictured). So, we were going to just keep the shower curtain on the outside of the tub, except the tub was slow to drain. If we showered the water would have started to pool and I was already dubious about how clean it was, I didn't want to stand in backed-up water. Sadly we didn't even get a nice shower out of the deal. And the room rates were over $200 at the time. We should have just spent the extra $100 and stayed at...
