TLDR: Bed bugs. 0/10 I’ve stayed at many hostels and know what to expect. You pay less than you would for a hotel because it’s no frills and you usually share a bathroom if not the room itself. However this place did not meet those basic standards. Day 1: Slept fine, maintenance was being done on laundry room making it unusable, one of the bathrooms shut down as a result. Not a big deal and wouldn’t have rated poorly based on this. Day 2: Woken up by girlfriend at midnight telling me she found a bed bug. Search pillowcase and mattress to find more bed bugs and blood stains typical of bed bugs. Immediately call front office and ask for refund because we now have to leave in the middle of the night which is extremely inconvenient. Told that we can only be refunded one night because we stayed the night before. Manager unsympathetic and acts as if we’re overreacting for wanting to leave. Total BS. Definitely not recommended.

I stayed in the dorm for one night and cannot say I would recommend this place. The entire upstairs (including the men’s dorm) reeked of cigarette smoke. As other reviews have mentioned, the dorm has these useless transparent curtains (pictured) that do nothing to block out the streetlights. If you have a good sleep mask this might not be a problem, but is it really too much to ask to put some damn curtains on the windows? Men’s bathroom only had one functioning shower while I was there. On the plus side, they have a nice living room/common area, and the beds are comfortable. For this price I wasn’t expecting luxury, or even cleanliness really, but I was expecting the bare necessities, which this place didn’t provide. I would’ve been better off camping.

It's cheap and close to enough to downtown and the beds are decent. Parking is nice too. That's about the only good thingI can say about this place. The reviews bashing this place are 100% true even years afterwards. The upstairs bathroom has a shared prison style shower and curtain toilets. The rest of the building is rough like that too. It's not something I'd recommend for the faint of heart. As others have said it has a "halfway house" vibe. Most of the people that stay there are locals or drifters looking for jobs. Not exactly a bad thing in itself but this is not a typical hostel. It's basically a shared motel. If you're a woman I recommend you do not stay here.

I rarely write reviews, but I'm taking the time to do it for these SCUM!

I made a reservation through Expedia with these people. I needed a bed for one person for the following evening, but Expedia defaults to two people . for a date three days out. I saw the date and fixed it, but I missed the number of persons until I was about to book the bed. I did see it though and went "Back" in my browser and changed the number of persons to "1" I didn't notice though, that the date was reset to three days hence. I went ahead and made my reservation, and when I received the emailed confirmation I saw that the date was wrong. I called Avenues Hostel. All I wanted to do is switch the date, and they in fact had the availability on the night I needed. They said I had to call Expedia which I did. Expedia said THEY couldn't change the reservation on their own; they had to send an email to the Hostel to get authorization to "waive the penalty", which they did. I called Avenues back and the "manager" said he couldn't authorize the waiver - the owner had to do it, and he lives in China. THE MANAGER CAN'T CHANGE A RESERVATION DATE! SERIOUSLY!!! Here's what Expedia told me after we tried to get them to change the date:

We wanted to follow up after our last conversation, where you asked us to reach out to your property to see if changing your reservation was possible.

"We've contacted Avenues Hostel to see if they could make an exception and grant a refund.

Unfortunately, after multiple tries, we weren't able to obtain approval from the property manager to waive the cancellation fee. This means the current rules and restrictions for your booking apply and a refund can't be granted.

We're really sorry about this; we always try to contact suppliers and advocate for our travelers in these situations. Properties often have strict policies around refunds, and there's nothing more we can do in this case.

Again, we're sorry that a refund wasn't possible. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to us."

ALL I WANTED TO DO IS CHANGE MY RESERVATION TO THE CORRECT DATE. THEY HAD AN AVAILABLE BED, BUT THEY WOULD NOT HELP ME BY SWITCHING IT. TRAVELER BEWARE!!!!! THESE GUYS ARE...

It's a mix. I spent a 5 nights there in a semi-private room (at least I had it to myself the whole time) but for $50 a night I'd consider it over-priced especially if you ended up sharing. There were two bunk beds, a small desk and plastic chair and a night stand plus a closet. Nothing else. Group bathroom/showers down the hall. Nice old neighborhood and only a mile from the temple and family history library (my reason for being there). The walk to the temple area was really nice ((I like older neighborhood with lots of trees). People who workrk there are nice and helpful but it's a bit quircky. I guess you have to ask to get the room cleaned because mine never was. No big deal for me since I was seldom there. The place is clean but starting to be frayed around the edges. Some to be expected from an older, well-used building (squeaky doors, floors and stairs with soft spots) but upkeep doesn't seem to be a priority. If the local econolodge had a better rep , you'd get a much better set-up for the same money during the week (minus the much better breakfast) and it's the same distance from temple square, etc. The group rooms (up to 4 people I think), look to be a much better deal since they're basically like the room I was in (I think though I didn't go into any of them), but depending on timing and luck, for abt $30 a night, you might only have one roomie or up to 3 roomies. For me and my needs that wouldn't work well but for many others it's just fine. They do have private rooms with a bathroom but they go quickly. Mattresses on the bunks are very good, not the thin ones you might think would be used. Smokers are sometimes a problem (as an ex-smoker, I really dislike being around it), since there was a tendency for them to be around the entrances (especially the back) instead of the area set aside for them at times. Not a big problem and never inside like at an econolodge I stayed at in another state but still irritating. Overall okay especially if you're on a tight budget and can do the group rooms but the semi-private does not seem to be a very good value. It may be the only option though as there's almost no other options in the lower price range...

when i first arrived to salt lake city, i stay at another hostel not to far from this one. it was my first time staying a hostel and i really like my experience there but after a couple of nights i was sick of paying for fee after fee after fee and ended up costing me just as much as a hotel from one night. i decided to look around and i found this place on google and decided to check it out. right when i walk in the door i started meeting people from all over the world. people have been beyond nice and really out going.you can pay cash versus the other place where you are charge fee for basically everything including early check in or paying cash. everything is really well maintained and very clean. you can either be in a private room or in a dorm room for 18 dollars a night! you get a really aweome breakfast which is free. its in a very nice area and the clientel here makes the place incredibly fun to stay at. you have a full cable service in every room which the other place had limited channels. you have a giant tv in the living room with many places to sit and a great kitchen with plenty of sitting down places. one thing i liked alot was the staff here is 24 hours a day and the other place was beyond complicated because if you needed something you would have to call someone. this place is great and you aren't cramped as the other place. you cant beat the price anywhere around town and its defentaly worth every penny. you have a supermarket 2 blocks north from this location. easy to grab traxs or any bus. right next to downtown and really convienant from every thing. i am defently staying here when i come back to salt lake city. i thought the cammlot inn was going to get more of my business when i come back to visit family/friends but i prefree this place any day of the week. honestly this place is outstanding i give it 98%. i highly recommend it and i hope your stay will be as pleasant as mine has been.
