Last night on Tuesday, I checked in late after a function as part of the major tech conference happening in downtown SLC. When I arrived, the person at the front desk wasn't there for at least 15 minutes. Finally, he checked me in room # 130.
The room I was staying in was visibly clean. However, I learned the hard way that the furnace connected to the room's thermostat wasn't working at all. Also there was no hot water. The toilet flushed like it was made in the 70s or something. Yes, the slow swirl. I wouldn't be comfortable with having a bowel movement on it. I also learned that the window was broken when I was closing the curtains.
Woke up to no improvement after I've shared this complaint to the (385) XXX-XXXX text number before I went to sleep as they were checking in on me to see if I've enjoyed my stay so far. I was too exhausted from the travels and the events to be pissed enough to switch hotels late at night.
This morning I decided to check out and requested not to be charged for the remaining duration of my stay. The same person that checked me in last night said he'll be able to comply with my request. The thing is that I didn't check in on the first night (Monday night) as I missed my flights on Monday. So I only managed to stay on Tuesday night, but I'd be okay with being charged for only two nights.
I asked the person for a physical copy of a receipt to confirm that I've checked out. He explained that it'll be emailed to me. I stood there frantically refreshing my email inbox, not seeing any email coming from Choice Hotels as I booked directly in advance on July 7th. He then explained that it'll be emailed later at 11 in the morning.
At that point, I'm not convinced they're being honest with me. I have no choice but to protect myself and post this review ASAP in case I need to dispute the charges. To take this point even further, I called the car rental place and the hotel on Monday about my missed flights, and explained that I'd not be able to check in on time. I've booked my car rental weeks in advance, and they were able to accommodate me, adjusted the rate for a 5-day reservation to 4 days and refunded me the difference. However, understandably the hotel didn't budge as I wasn't insisting that they should re-adjust accordingly as my primary concern was to avoid losing the reservation and not having a place to stay. Even other recent reviews, which I just read this morning, shared the exact same thing I experienced. A part of me wished they mentioned the room number they were staying in as that'd strongly support the justification of this review.
Honestly, I'd give them no star, but I'll give them 1 star as they did provide somewhat a clean bed that I can comfortably sleep in as I was more worried about bed bugs, which I haven't encountered in my case.
UPDATE: After posting the review, I went back to the hotel at the “promised” time as I still haven’t gotten an email by then. This time I dealt with a different individual who was able to provide me with a copy of the receipt along with an email copy. He acknowledged how upset I was. It was almost as if the other individual that I had was quite incompetent. Not to mention… disingenuous. I was quite grateful for the person that handled my situation as I was so close to escalating this to the headquarter or a local authority.
As much as I want to change the rating solely on the fact that my request was finally fulfilled, it’d be dishonest for me to do so, and the initial interaction that I received should’ve never happened in the first place. No person should experience that as I’d not wish that on my enemies.
I didn’t realize how outdated the building was until I finally saw the back of the building in broad daylight the next day, which would’ve been a hint. In my opinion, they need to temporarily close the business to do some renovations if they’re pretty serious about staying in business, not wanting to deal with angry customers and processing...
Read moreWe arrived on 5-20-2024. The room that was given to us had a bedroom up a set of stairs, my wife does not see, and we are both old climbing up and down the stairs was impossible. The room was reserved for us by a Choice hotels reservation clerk. Not a problem we asked to change rooms.
After explaining the situation, we were given a new room # 113. The room was cold I turned the thermostat up and the unit was blowing both hot and cold air, very uncomfortable. Let the desk clerk know the next morning on the way out. The stated they would have maintenance look at it.
5-21-24 arrived at hotel at 8pm. The room was still very cold. Went to the front desk. Was told to turn the unit to 85 degrees and turn the fan on low. Wait 30 minutes and determine the air to the room. Since the room was so cold we waited in the lobby for 30 minutes. Went back after 30 minutes and being frustrated by now I mistakenly open room 117 by mistake with the key card to my room 113. It was full of Asian people, should not have been able to open their room. I was placed in a dangerous position and could have been shot.
The room was still very cold. Went back to the desk and after talking to the desk clerk he reluctantly changed us to room 114. The new key card would not open the door. Went back to the desk clerk he did not believe me, he went and tried to get in the room and failed. Gave us another room 135, I think it was. It was just as cold as the room we left. Went back to the desk and again recently he gave us another room #235. Went to that room it was cold but was able to get heat out of the air unit. Finally got to bed at 11pm that night.
5-22-24 Wednesday. Stopped at the desk on the way out and went over the above with desk person. Was told that it was an old hotel, and they could only have heat or cooling not both and it was turned to cooling mode at this time. Said he would get maintenance to look at the room. When we arrived back that evening, they had turned on a gas fireplace that was in the room the thermostat was still on 90 degrees where I had left it that morning. The room was warm and satisfactory the rest of our stay. I was able to adjust the thermostat, so the room was comfortable.
5-24-24 We checked out this morning.
At no time did anyone really apologize or reduce the room charges that were charged. This is not the first time we have stayed at this hotel all the past stays were very satisfactory. In the future we will have to evaluate whether we stay at this...
Read moreThis was the worst hotel experience I have ever had. Delta booked me here after canceling my flight. Multiple panes of the window were broken (not just cracked) and taped back together. The condition of the tape indicated the window has been like this for awhile. There was mold growing on the window and had spread to the back side of the curtains. There were stains on the comforter and 2 of the pillow cases. There isn't a mini fridge. There is a gap under the door that lets in a lot of light from the hallway. The walls are paper thin. You can hear absolutely everything from the neighboring rooms, as well as the roar of planes overhead every few minutes. All that isn't even the worst of it though.||It was late and I was very tired by the time I got checked in. I went to get ice, located at the opposite end of the hall. On the way back to my room I wasn't paying attention and accidentally stopped at the room two doors down from mine. I pressed my key card against the sensor. The green light came on and the lock clicked open. I started to push the door open and was met with the terrified screams of the woman inside. MY KEY OPENED A ROOM THAT WASN'T MINE! It was extremely unsettling. The following morning upon leaving my room to check out, I saw a couple exit a room further down the hall with their luggage. Seeing they had vacated their room and still in somewhat disbelief that my key had opened another room the night before, when I passed that room I tried my key and IT UNLOCKED THAT ROOM TOO! I apparently had a master key to every room and for all I know, all of the other guests did too. This is pure incompetence on the part of the front desk staff and totally unacceptable. I carry my own travel lock for hotel doors and use the deadbolt and door locks whenever I am in the room. But until this experience, it never occurred to me that someone besides hotel staff may be able to enter my room when I'm not there. Now I feel like every time I return to a hotel room, I need to check and make sure no one is hiding in there. ||I'll end with the one positive thing I can say about this hotel. The shuttle service was great. Unlike the room, the vans were clean and in good repair. The drivers were courteous and the shuttle...
