Nice, vintage hotel. The room was a good size. Bathroom was small but that is expected with a building built in 1915 and it was totally adequate. The room was clean and well taken care of. The upkeep on the building and rooms was great. The various staff at the reception area we encountered were very friendly and helpful. The only thing we didn't like was the huge window in the room was slightly scary because it felt like one of us could fall out of it if we tripped near it. It was so big and very low. I would not recommend staying there with kids. I would be terrified the whole time my kids would fall out because kids are so careless and worry free. Another slight issue was the room ran a little warm for some reason even though it was cold outside in Jan. We left the windows open and the thin sheet and blanket was good. A little warning of some possible paranormal activity though. We had the bathroom and bedroom windows open when we went to sleep and when we woke up both were closed and neither of us closed them while we were sleeping. The crazy thing was one window opened horizontal and the other opened verical so it didn't just slowly close from the weight of the window. Not sure how that happened but I thought I would mention it in case someone was interested in seeking that out or avoiding our room. We stayed in room 410.

*update*: we were fine with no ac, but the heater randomly turned on in the middle of the night and the room felt like it was burning hot. There was no way to turn it off either. Well, overall I'd give this place a 6/10. Not so great first impressions, but it got better through my stay. Overall I'd say I'm willing to come back again in future. First thing first: the room was not very spacious at all, with a small double bed, musky odor, and a tiny bathroom/shower that almost resembles what they got in Europe. None of the staff was wearing a mask so I tried to air out the room as much as possible while wearing the mask myself to stay safe. What made me feel uncomfortable the most was the fact that there were hairs inside the sheets that you sleep in. I called front desk and they sent in the housekeepers for some new blankets, the sheets still seem a bit old but they were at least clean this time. I called the front desk later in the evening to help me fix the TV, and the guy came up right away and fixed it immediately. Moreover, can't complain about the location and the price. So although not everything was prepared 100%, they were willing to fix things in an efficient manner. Afterall, if one's here for a budget business trip, would only need the room to get some rest anyway.

My husband booked this through the hotels website for our recent stay in SF and made the mistake of not actually reading any of these google reviews first. The website isn’t an accurate representation of what you get while staying at the Union Square Plaza Hotel. Knowing that it is an older hotel, our expectations were already low, but after our very late evening check in to our room, I felt unsafe, creeped out and disgusted. The wall behind the bed had multiple holes in it, the ceiling had a large crack from what looked to be water damage and the floor was noticeably dirty. Upon closer inspection we found several long hairs, as well as a boot print on the white sheets. I could look past the bizarre decor choices in the room, but a filthy bed, that’s a no from me. With this said, the front desk personnel was very accommodating when we asked to switch to a different room, even at the late hour of 11pm. Our new room was seemingly at least clean. All this aside, I noticed someone else mentioning the unsafe elevator in a review from 5 months ago, and this issue has still not been addressed. The elevator has not been inspected since 2019. I don’t plan on returning to this hotel, but I hope this issue gets addressed for future hotel guests safety.

I typically book my hotels with Hotwire due to their “hot deals”. This was the hotel that was picked through that deal. I needed a pet friendly hotel and one room for two adults. We checked in and got into our room, 706. It was a small double bed. This bed absolutely does NOT accommodate two adults, unless both adults are petite females, which for context it was my self and my almost 6 foot tall husband. We can back down, and I talked to front desk. They said I’d have to pay extra to upgrade to queen. I told her I booked a room for 2 adults, that bed does not comply with what I booked. She apologized to me and said the best she could do was give us a queen and we’d have to pay the difference. Fine, I said. We were then given room 710. We go back up the elevator to the 7th floor. I see room 710 and there is a ‘do not disturb sign’ on the door. So I knock just in case there’s someone in there. Nothing. I knocked again and nothing. So I open the door. And the room is dirty. The bed is disheveled as if recently used, the counters are dirty, the window is open, and the trash was not removed. So back downstairs we go. Front desk apologizes again and personally goes to check our now third room. She returns and hands us a key to room 609 and states she personally checked it herself. At this point I am just turned off by this hotel. We decide to stay because we already parked out car in a locked garage that already closed for the night and at this point we are exhausted. In future trips to San Francisco, I will not stay here again. Staff was courteous and friendly which was great. But overall just turned off with the hotel esthetics, the amount of noise, the neighborhood did not feel very safe and the fact that the hotel has the audacity to state two adults fit comfortably in a double size bed they have. No they do not. This is false advertising in my opinion, that bed is not even wide enough to hold two average size males comfortably. And honestly that’s what bothered me so much about this hotel. The fact that they were not able to accommodate two adults...
