I STRONGLY ADVISE DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL (CARPENTER STREET HOTEL)!!!!!! Our experience was AWFUL!!! When we initially checked in with Vicky, the gm/owner told us that we had to pay an extra $150 for being Illinois residents. This is a lie and nowhere on their website says this. She made it all up to get extra money. We disputed it and she "waived" the $150 fee. First red flag.
The room we were put in was on the 3rd floor. It was dirty and the shower curtain was moldy. The sheets looked already slept in. Vicky the owner put us in it (which was most likely unbeknownst to her), a secret hang out room of her head housekeeper (Brittney), used for ducking out during shifts, opioids, having friends hang out or staying nights for free, ect.. We were staying for at least a few weeks. Brittney was angry over this and conspired to make our stay as uncomfortable and inconvenient as possible. We began to notice abnormally loud and purposeful slamming of doors next to us over and over again. Banging noises on purpose in the room next door even at night. There were laundry machines on the other end of our room and Brittney ran them for 8 hours straight to create noise. Those machines are for guest use. We witnessed her and another housekeeper laughing and finding humor in running the machines for that long on purpose. Main employees involved: Willie, who works front desk/housekeeping, a middle aged male housekeeper and whoever else Brittney can influence to follow her schemes. So we decided to change to the first floor, but this did not defuse the situation.
The same nuisances continued. They would go in a room directly above ours and purposely stomp on the floor day or night. Brittney has access to all rooms and will always know which room we're in. We changed our room one more time on the 3rd floor but a different one from the previous. BE WARNED......... THIS STAFF WILL GO INTO GUESTS' ROOMS to search what they can steal. This can also be potentially UNSAFE!!! There are many unsuspecting guest who have no clue. They tried it with our room. A housekeeper sent by Brittney came to our door because they thought we were gone and she sneakily tried to open our door. Brittney was not far behind her. It was a set up. They didn't realize we were watching everything through the peep hole. I held the door handle then she realized we were there so she lied on the spot and said she wanted to collect sheets. I told her I didn't request anything and she hurried away out of sight. Willie would use profanity through the hallways being extra loud, f-bombs and all, not caring if guest hear him. His disrespectful attitude definitely match the morale of this hotel.
Brittney is the head housekeeper. THIS IS VERY BAD!!! She's very sneaky and conniving and cannot be trusted. What was done to us was not the first time. Vicky, THE GM/OWNER IS AWFUL!!!!!! She told us at the last minute that she had no more rooms available, but at that point we didn't want to stay anymore. They were trying to gas-light us and wanted to provoke us. When you experience what we had there is no one to resolve anything. There is no corporate to contact because the carpenter is a privately owned business. I do not want this to happen to anyone else. DO NOT SPEND A DIME HERE!!!!! This establishment does not deserve your money. They do not appreciate quiet and respectful paying guest.
THESE PEOPLE ARE TOXIC AND THEIVES!!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR...
Read moreFront desk staff (the gentleman) lied about construction. When I got to me room within minutes it was very clear that there was construction going on in the room above me. At 9.30 at night. I called down to the front desk to ask if there was construction going on, and the man said he did not hear anything. My room was on the opposite end of the building, I am not surprised he did not hear anything, but there was clearly construction going on. He said there was no construction going on. He said he would call the room and tell the people to keep it down. The construction noise continued on for another two hours, so I had a rough night. The next morning, my room had a strong smell of cigarette smoke. Stronger than the night before I called the front desk and asked if I could move.
The lady told me she could move me to the room across the hall from mine. I advised her that I wanted to be upstairs because of the construction going on above me. She said once a room on an upper floor was cleaned she would move me- and she did.
When the housekeeper came to my door, I told her I was going to be leaving the room because of the construction and moving to another room and she confirmed that there was construction going on in the room above me, and that it was loud. So, the guy lied to me. Either way, I did get moved to another room. It was better, it was directly above the room with the construction, but I did not hear any noise. The shower curtain rod in the bathroom is crooked, so the shower curtain does not stay closed. There is no showerhead, just a spigot, so the bathroom floods when you take a shower. They do offer free breakfast, the coffee was actually pretty good. The breakfast, three out of the four mornings I was there was biscuits and gravy, and it wasn’t very good. They had a waffle maker where you could make your own waffle, and that was decent. The bread was stale and the muffins were awful. The facility is very close to the historic places in downtown, parking is free, and you can walk all around with ease and convenience.
Even though I am giving a negative review, I will probably stay there again in the future because the price is pretty good and the location is great. I know for next time to ask for extra towels for the flooding bathroom, and to ask to stay on the third floor. Being on the first floor, especially close to the doors allows all the cigarette smoke to come in. I had to take all of my clothes to a laundromat because the smell was so strong.
All of this said, it is reasonably clean, the bed was comfortable, some of the front desk Staff are better than others, and the location was really good for what I needed. Bad review, and all, I will probably stay...
Read moreBased on existing reviews I definitely expected more. Upon entering the building there were several staff members sitting on a bench close to the entrance smoking. As it turns out this happens daily. The glass doors were dirty and as I walked in an old crumpled, torn, stained note was hanging from a box on the wall. I made the reservations for myself and two co-workers. I was embarrassed for my co-workers to see the state of the entrance so I pulled off the layers of old tape and removed the tattered, hanging note. There is one person, short dishwater blond hair, that treats you like you are an inconvenience. I walked up to the desk to check out. She was on the phone. After standing there for several minutes she paused her conversation and ask me in a rude, frumpy voice, "What do you want?" Oh yes, she is just who you want working your front desk. The plastic door cards you are given to enter your room are troublesome. I had to go down to the desk three different times because I couldn't get into my room. And here is the best part. In checking out I realized we were charged for an extra day. The manager promptly corrected it but when I asked for both the over charge receipt and the corrected receipt Ms. Frumpy refused to give the receipt showing the overcharge. I told her since the charge had already gone through I wanted it along with the receipt showing we received a credit. She still would not give it to me and acted insulted that I would want it. I kept asking until she went into the managers office to ask if I could have it! I must say, the nicest person I met was the man cleaning the rooms. Each day I encountered him he was kind, smiled, didn't hesitate to empty my trash when asked, and greeted me with a 'Good morning!' That was the best thing to come out of my experience at the Carpenter Street Hotel! And guess what, I am a customer...
