After staying in the AC Ballantyne at the Ballantyne Village in NC location, we figured we would try a location closer to home while traveling this time. After becoming Bon Voy Marroitt members.
Needless to say, we were bummed. After first getting to the SpringHill Suites in Sumter, we were excited.
The front desk took a moment as they were busy elsewhere in the hotel, so check-in took about 10-20 minutes. We arrived at 9ish pm due to traveling for vacation heading home. While waiting for the front office staff to return to the front desk, I looked around the lobby while my family was waiting in the car. The lobby has a bar and dining area, which was very nice. There is also the drink and snack area by the front desk. There is bottled beer and wine available until midnight. You can see the pool, 3ft to 5ft and hot tub, 3ft. Pool hours were 7am to 10pm. The guest computer area, which was not very private. A 24-hour workout room. There is a nice outside patio area out front. We did notice a stack of tile, carpet, and other remodeling items by the front main window.
After check-in, we took our bags up to the room. The elevators were questionable. We did not feel safe. There are only 4 floors in this hotel. Our room was on the third floor. Once getting off the elevator, you smell old musky warm air. In the hallway, there were trashcans outside the room across from ours with trash in them, along with trash on the floor and a door that was left cracked open.
We sat our bags in the room and checked the room out. The air was off, so the room was warm and musky. The controls for the air are on the wall by the door. The lights were odd, happy hunting for light switches. The switches by the front door, which turn on nothing. The showers were okay, they have good water pressure. Flushing the toilets was so so, you have to hold the handle down and wait a few moments. The toilet area is separate from the shower area, two different rooms. There is a large storage closet, extra pillow/blankets for the pullout couch, ironing board/iron, and shelves. There were a few cushions on the couch with stains on them. Desk area with rolling chair. TV, which once turned on it had no signal. Good luck with the TV. There is also a mini fridge/coffee bar area. The room is big enough to accommodate wheelchairs, however small enough that you may not be able to turn your wheelchair around if you were in front of the beds. Also, if you pull out the couch bed, you can no longer use the desk area. There are two small tables in front of the couch that are able to be moved around the room. After checking out the room, which we were not impressed by, we left for dinner.
There are several places close to the hotel for both dinner and breakfast. We walked to the Wild Wings, which was right next to the hotel.
After dinner on the way back to our room, we notified the front desk that our TV stated no signal. They moved us to another room instead. We checked the room out before we started moving our bags. Once again, the air was off in the room and had the old musky smell. The TV cable was unplugged on this TV and had two remotes. We were able to figure out the TV. We did check the TV in our room before moving rooms. The cable line was connected. However, it was still not working properly.
After moving into the new room, we were unable to get the door to close back on the other room. We pulled, and we tried everything, but the door was not closing. Also, the other room was still cracked next door to that room. We head downstairs to give the keycard to the old room and let the staff know the door to the room is not closing at all, and the room next door has been cracked since we arrived. The staff told us that is a room they are remodeling.
Breakfast the next morning was so so. There was a lot to choose from milk, juice, coffee, bagels, cereal, fruit, grits, oatmeal, eggs, sausage, breakfast potatoes, and a few other things.
Needless to say, this hotel was okay. I think they were in the process of remodeling this whole hotel from...
Read moreLong Term Stay. Staff is friendly but the hotel is dirty and in dire need of a deep clean and updated repairs. Security needed.
Housekeeping cleans, but their cleaning supplies is lacking. It feels like the hotel is cutting corners on their cleaning supplies and housekeeping is doing the best they can with what they have. I used to be in the hospitality industry (10+ years). To make up for it, I purchased my own basic cleaning supplies and deep cleaned my room once a week.
The floors and carpets haven't been deep cleaned in who knows how long. And often the floors are more sticky/dirty after getting mopped. Which I would have to use a wet towel or buy wipes and hand mop my flooring myself. Took several days of asking to have housekeeping vacuum the floors - especially under the bed (leftover food/wrappers/confetti from previous guests).
Several rooms need to be overhauled - maintenance in the shower and adequate carpet repairs. Some of the rooms the shower barely works. Not enough water pressure to adequately wash my hair, so I'd have to shower elsewhere. Same as the cleaning above, showers are in need of a deep clean and grouting redone. Each of the rooms I stayed in had chunks of carpet that were peeling away or had chunks missing and were poorly patched.
My AC didn't work in one of my rooms during the summer and it took several days to get it repaired. I had to stay elsewhere because it was too hot and the nature of my job (aviation) mandates a minimum required amount of sleep each night or else I can't fly. The shades in the room were not enough to block out the bright lights in the parking.
Some of the long term stay rooms had an extra fridge in them. Most of my rooms were good, but I had one that didn't work. The fridge would randomly dump water all over the main area (not freezer) which made it impossible to store fruit/vegetables or other items (with the exception of drinks) in.
Half of the card readers on the doors from the parking lot work/don't work. Laundry facility was good and extremely accommodating.
Security is lacking. During my stay here there was a couple of break ins into vehicles. The worst was one night, in the back lot by the trees, about 80% of the vehicles (full lot) had their windows shattered and stuff stolen.
The staff overall was pretty friendly. The bartender was awesome. I'm not sure if I'd stay here long term again. I love Marriott, but this hotel doesn't live up to Marriott reputation and standards that keeps me loyal...
Read moreI wanted to complement the staff and owner of the Spring Hill Suites, Sumter, SC. During a recent stay (February 23-25 2015) I lost my headphones. I was sure they were in my room but since the hotel was full that night I had to change rooms in order to extend my stay. (Ice storm coming).. so I asked the front desk and they were very sweet but no luck..I was sure they were in the room that I had left.
Finally later that day I decided to ask again and the owner of the hotel was there. He overheard the situation while I told the front desk what had happened and the front desk assured me that they would make it right. A little while later, I went to the gym at the hotel and was working out and the owner walked in with a BRAND NEW set of headphones for me! How amazing! What incredible service! I absolutely felt like a queen... I hope he (Raj Patel) and Kayla Foster and all of the staff (including the sweet front desk gal who was new with blonde hair) and the other one who had long brown hair and a very sweet smile) know how much I sincerely appreciate being treated so kindly! Oh and the breakfast gal was terribly sweet too. She made me special turkey sausage every morning I was there because I dont eat pork. At every turn the staff was over accommodating which is so sadly rare to see.. however..
May I say that I used to be a LOYAL and devoted Hilton guest. Since I have been having so many amazing experiences with Marriott properties recently I am a convert! I love the products, the people and the pledge! So refreshing! :) Thank you again Raj and Sumter Springhill Suites for a wonderful stay and a job WELL...
