This is a lovely, quiet place to stay. I spoke with Lorraine on the phone before booking the Luigi Filippo room, asking about the location, places to eat, etc., and she could not have been more gracious. I chose the Luigi Filippo room, which is on the second floor, looking out onto the back garden.||I arrived late in the afternoon on an unseasonably hot June day, and the rich terra-cotta walls and thick silk window shades made it feel like a sun-warmed Italian villa. The dresser is an antique from Giancarlo's family home in Italy (as are many of the furnishings), but the drawers opened smoothly, and were spacious and clean. It also had a large closet with two white-cotton bathrobes and plenty of hangers, and the bathroom was modernized and spotless.||There was not a lot of counter space, but there were a couple of small shelves and a little table. I chose to keep most of my toiletries in my travel kit and hung it from a hook on the door, so that was fine. The shampoo and liquid soap were in dispensers on the wall, but I had brought my own travel sizes.||I stayed during the week and there was only one other couple, who were in the adjacent room. When I arrived, I was told that the two rooms share a thermostat, which was in the other guests' room, but they asked if the temperature setting would be okay with me. If you need to control this yourself, you might want to select a different room, but it was not a problem. The bedside table lamps are very pretty and cozy, but just a little bit dim for reading in bed, if that's something you enjoy. There was no TV in the room, but I didn't want one.||I needed to be up and out of the house earlier than the other guests, but Giancarlo asked me what time I would like breakfast (7:30). The first morning, he prepared a starter of plain yogurt and strawberries with a dab of ricotta, followed by an open-face egg sandwich with tomato and cheese. The next morning was fresh fruit, an omelet with fresh spinach, and whole-grain toast. ||There are two housecats who are clever about opening the closed door between the dining room and the kitchen, but they were quiet and unobtrusive--a perfect adornment to a country house. I only mention this for anyone who might be allergic.||The house itself is situated along the main artery leading to Millbrook, Sharon Turnpike (Route 44), and some other reviews mentioned traffic noise; however, the house is tucked back a little from the road, and I didn't find the noise noticeable. It is a short drive into Millbrook itself, and Lorraine told me that there is a back road that is walkable, but I chose to drive into town for dinner at Barbaro (which was delicious), because I was by myself and would be returning from dinner after dark. Another wonderful restaurant, Serevan, is in Amenia, about 20 minutes away.||In summary, the Millbrook Country House is a charming, low-key place to stay. If you are looking for designer toiletries, a high-definition TV, and an in-room coffee maker, this is not the place for you, but I recommend it and will...
Read moreWe made our way home from a magical overnight stay at the Millbrook Country House counting ourselves as beyond lucky to have found it, with a spur of the moment, quickly planned and unexpected opportunity for the short getaway. The choice would have been fortuitous if only for the chance to meet the extraordinary couple who own and run MCH, Lorraine and Giancarlo. They were not only extremely gracious, kind and generous in a multitude of ways, but they were each tremendously interesting, gifted individuals. We have not before had the experience of finding B&B proprietors themselves so delightful and such a great privilege to meet. Not altogether surprisingly, the beauty of their spirits and vision was everywhere evident at Millbrook Country House – in the distinctive, lovely antique Italian furnishings and décor, in the gorgeous and thoughtful renovation work to the historic home, their delicious, perfect breakfasts, and most exultantly, across the expanses of their magnificent, joyous gardens. Apart from the deep pleasure of conversation with each of them, and our bright, gorgeous room, our trip was made so powerfully wonderful and memorable by key recommendations made by email by Lorraine, incredibly taking time to very personally respond in detail to our message with description of hoped for activities, and thoughts about our planning, prioritization and preparation process. We sought a hike, and were directed to the trails of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies five minutes down the road. We found the great and varied natural beauty we’d hoped to be immersed in right there, and on the holiday weekend, without a single other person ever in sight or in hearing. Most especially, the nearby Innisfree Garden will remain a lifelong cherished memory, and we’re committed to getting back there and to the MCH whenever it could next...
Read moreTook my boyfriend here for his 40th birthday as he said he just wanted something relaxing. Thankfully the weather cooperated and we found ourselves enjoying the sun on their outdoor patio furniture near the outdoor gardens on a blissful, sunny Sept weekend. ||||The owners are super super friendly - I enjoyed chatting with them very much. They were also happy to make suggestions for what to do and where to eat. There were a few other people staying there, while we were there and they were super friendly. I felt very safe & secure the whole time. ||||It was very lovely sitting out by the garden and enjoying a bottle of wine before we went to the vineyard (8 min drive). We also checked out the cute little down (10 min drive), which has a few shops and restaurants. ||||The room where we slept was really nice, very historic, but whew that bed was tough to sleep in! It's an older bed with an older mattress & we should have asked for more pillows! ||||For breakfast we had some ricotta with cooked apples and some toast with an egg over easy. It was okay, I did think they might give us a bit more, but fine for what it was. The coffee wasn't great, but my tea was very good. It sort of felt like I was staying at my grandparents house - which was kinda cute. Very historic. I should also mention, they do have two cats, who are very friendly, but could be problematic if you are allergic! ||||Overall we did very much enjoy our time and I would happily recommend this place, just a few minor tweaks I...
