Last month (April 2022), I became the victim of domestic violence and decided to get my toddler son and I out of that situation. Needless to say, I was no way prepared and proceeded to throw random clothes and items for my son and I into the car and started driving from Los Angeles to family in Dallas, TX, and Louisiana. However, not far out of Los Angeles, my car started to get an Overheating warning, which was alarming as the car was almost new but my abuser had almost exclusively driven it (and not taken care of it, obviously). We found ourselves making very slow time on our journey and almost called it quits in Phoenix, Arizona. In a final push, we made it to a dealership in Tucson but were told it could take a day or two to address. We needed a hotel room in a safe around close by but had limited funds. Thankfully, Hotels.com suggested Varsity Clubs of America – Tucson. At first glance, it looked like it would be too expensive but I was surprised to see that they were actually cheaper and nicer than more nationally-branded hotels that would be further away from the dealership. We were able to check in early, the guy at the front desk was very nice and helpful. In the course of two days (we extended our stay from 1 day to 2), my son and I basically had a small apartment with a full fridge, dishwasher, garbage disposal, large capacity microwave, countertop burners, a large bed, premium TV channels (including NOGGIN for my son), and a heavenly large soak bath. We never felt the heat of the desert because the AC units blew super cold. We were also able to both order room service (a contracted kitchen that delivers right to your door) and food/supply deliveries from Target and a local restaurant. Although my son was having some adjustment issues (a tantrum here and there), we were never treated like a nuisance and even the other hotel customers were friendly and talkative. I never told the staff about the domestic violence escape across the U.S. and they very kindly ignored our weird state of dress to make sure we felt valued and respected nonetheless. I had never heard of these hotels, had never been to Tucson in my life, but I can say that this hotel and its employees gave me a positive imprint of the great people of that city. We were able to get our car out of the dealership because of kind donations of friends and family and we finally made it to our destination a few days later. But we would never have been able to do so without Varsity Clubs of America – Tucson. My son and I are currently in the process of starting over from scratch but I will forever pledge to find a Varsity Clubs of America hotel anywhere I stay in the U.S. once I get back on my feet and back to traveling (for fun this time). From the bottom of my heart (and my son’s), thank...
Read moreI cannot believe that I slept on this place for years! Walking in, you're met with a large lobby decorated with sports themed paintings, a wide sitting area, and big screens playing the sports channel (this, along with the room number signs and sports memorabilia in the hallways, plays into the "Varsity" theme of the hotel). The lobby has a nostalgic old hotel smell (not bad at all, just distinctive), but the rooms themselves smell fresh.
Speaking of the rooms, you are magically transported to a small apartment the moment you walk in. Every room is a suite, with a full-sized fridge, sink, microwave, two burners, coffee maker, and dishwasher! You also get a small table with three chairs and a sizeable sitting area with a couch, chair, TV, and two ottomans. The bathroom is large and spacious, with a large tub and an absolutely glorious showerhead. The power of the stream is strong. The separate sink is nice, with a huge mirror and more towels of all sizes than what you'll know what to do with! There's also a small closet with safe next to the bathroom. The bedroom is a tiny bit cramped, but with so much space elsewhere, I cannot complain. The mattress is a bit stiffer than my preference, but I rested well.
All of the front desk staff during our visit was extremely friendly and helpful. They really made us feel like welcome customers. There are complaints of homelessness in reviews of the businesses in the area, but I never once felt unsafe or uncomfortable, even walking across the street to McDonald's at night. (You can mitigate the no breakfast situation by walking across the way and using the McD app to get a breakfast sandwich on the cheap. Egg McMuffin and large hot coffee for less than $4! But I digress......)
There are a few downsides to the place, the age shows in the wear of the furniture in the living space. There's also the hefty daily $15 resort fee. However, I feel that the price that a room can be had for plus the fee is still absolutely reasonable for Tucson and the amount of space you get. (Protips: Look under kitchen sink and bath sink counters for trash cans! I went mad for a few minutes thinking there were no trash cans. There is also an adorable tiny bottle of dish soap, a sponge, a couple of dishwasher tablets, and a packet of laundry detergent powder under the kitchen sink. Washers and dryers...
Read moreFirst trip to Tucson. Stayed at the Varsity Club which is a time share resort. We had an L shaped studio room that was very spacious on the third floor in the corner. We learned the one bedrooms were the same size but had a wall and seemed much smaller. Had to share a king size bed as there was no sofa bed despite having been told prior to making the reservation that there was one. A roll away was offered but would have taken up too much room. The only downside to the room was the super hard mattress. It was even more uncomfortable than the bed on the train I was on the night before to get to Tucson. Enjoyed the quiet of the room. Unfortunately it overlooked the parking lot so not much of a view. It rained the entire time we were there as it's monsoon season. The pool and jacuzzi were very nice as was the little putting green adjacent. Great lobby with fun games. Nice compact gym that we never quite made it to. Very appreciative for the laundry facilities. Good location. Wish they had a restaurant or provided some sort of coffee service but they don't. There are in room kitchenettes with full size refrigerators. Wi-Fi signal was slow with lots of buffering when we wanted to watch streamed movies.
Really helpful staff. Sherry and Carla were great about answering questions and providing information about things to do in the area since we couldn't do the outdoor activities we'd planned. David recommended a local live theater, The Gaslight, a fun. family friendly dinner theater. We got the last two seats to the Saturday night performance of Ghost Blasters a parody of GhostBusters. Had a great time.. Wish there were more of these theaters. This has been the local theater for 44 years. Attached to it was a '50s diner that provides the menu for the shows and a collection of...
