Blatantly Discriminatory Experience at Courtyard Marriott West Orange
I’ve stayed at this hotel before and expected a professional experience—but what happened during our most recent visit was completely unacceptable and honestly traumatic. My husband and I booked two adjoining rooms to accommodate our family and a few guests. We are Bonvoy members and repeat customers, but this time we were treated as if we didn’t belong there.
Our children were in the pool for less than 15 minutes when Sebastian Alexandra, the Assistant General Manager, abruptly told them all to get out. When asked why, his only explanation was, “You need wristbands.” This was the first time we were hearing about this policy. It wasn’t shared during booking, check-in, or anywhere on the Marriott website.
My husband and I went down to the pool to ensure everyone had left, and while there, we briefly greeted someone we recognized—who was not even with our group. Sebastian saw a few kids still near the pool (only about three, and not with us) and immediately ran to call the police without saying a word to us. He assumed they were with our party and escalated the situation in a way that was completely unnecessary and clearly biased.
When we questioned him further, he gave inconsistent information, and handed us a random sheet of paper about the rules that we had never seen, agreed to, or signed. One of our guests even asked, “Did we see or sign this?” And the answer was no.
To make things worse, when looking at our booking, Sebastian commented that we “booked through Expedia”—in a condescending tone, as if we didn’t deserve the same level of respect because we didn’t book direct. Completely uncalled for.
All children were under responsible adult supervision and well-behaved. Yet instead of addressing any concern with professionalism, he chose to call the police on a group of Black children, some of whom were not even staying with us. If this was truly about policy, then why weren’t we ever asked to leave?
This wasn’t policy enforcement—this was targeted, discriminatory treatment.
Update: I contacted Expedia to request a refund. They reached out to the hotel, and Sebastian refused, claiming the situation occurred because “the children were causing a commotion.” This is completely false. It’s disappointing that instead of taking accountability, he doubled down on false accusations to avoid issuing a refund.
This entire experience was humiliating and hurtful. We will never return, and I urge Marriott to investigate and take...
Read moreAfter a very long day of driving down from MA and helping out my parents with cleaning out their house we looked forward to the comfortable beds at Marriott. As this was just one night, we opted for the more cost efficient Courtyard. The hotel is strategically located and for healthy foodies like us, we love that it is right down the street from a huge Whole Foods. We came in late and had some take out from Whole Foods while we watched a movie. It would have been a restful night despite trying to get the heat in the room balanced, if not for some guests who were running up and down the halls, banging on doors saying that there was a fire. My boyfriend knew they were pulling pranks and was about to alert the front desk when they set off the fire alarms. This was 2 am folks and people were pouring out of rooms, pulling on clothing and heading towards the stairwells. We stood on on balcony, because we knew it was false. The piercing sound of the alarms and strobe like lights were stressful to say the least. Fire department apparently needed quite some time to reset the system after thoroughly checking the premises just in case. This was annoying and many of us opted to go out into our freezing cars and sit with the engine running to escape the noise. The staff tried to explain the situation, but how can you really with all the noise and folks huddled in the lobby with their fingers in their ears.I did suggest later that perhaps earplugs should be provided in every room and boxes of them on hand to give out for just this type of event. I luckily had some with me. The next morning we were assured that they did know who did it and they were being prosecuted. The manager called me on my cell later in the day to apologize and explain. He spoke to everyone personally. We didn't take advantage of the free breakfast given, but that was a nice gesture. This was a rough night for all, but under the circumstances I thought the staff handled everything as...
Read moreI'm a longtime Platinum Elite Marriot member, and I had stayed at this hotel once before. I got an upgrade to a king suite (although they gave me a hard time getting the upgrade when I arrived, even though the room was open). That room is great - has a couch, t.v., and a refrigerator in both the bedroom and living room. Lots of room to hang out. Bathroom sink outside the bathroom. Great location - near the movie theater and all the stores/restaurants in Essex Green shopping plaza. It's about 10 minutes from Turtle Back Zoo. When we checked in, the front desk woman wasn't friendly at first (she looked like she didn't want to be bothered with us), but then she became much friendlier and told us where to go to eat. ||The restaurant that all the Courtyard Marriotts have in the lobby only serves food for breakfast here, (I've never seen that before) instead of breakfast and dinner. The hotel was nicely decorated for the holidays. The t.v. remotes in both rooms were really slow, and we couldn't watch Neflix. After we logged in, it would just spin and spin. But the thing that really bothered me, is that we had a "do not disturb" sign on the door. As Platinum Elite members, we requested a 1 p.m. checkout. We were about to leave at 12 p.m., when housekeeping knocked on the door (with the don't disturb sign) and then immediately tried to enter without waiting 5 seconds. I opened the door, and seriously, the woman was glaring at us. So unbelievably unfriendly. I stated that we would be leaving in two minutes, and she just gave us an angry look and walked away. To us, it seemed like the hotel has unhappy employees. We usually find Marriott employees to be so friendly. (I had called before I arrived, and the two people I spoke to also weren't too friendly.) I don't know if I would come back -it's conveniently located, priced well, and clean, and the suite is really spacious, but just didn't feel...
