During a recent trip through East Texas, we spent a night in Winnsboro and stayed at The Clark House Bed and Breakfast. What we anticipated to be the highlight of our "Winnsboro Stay" turned out to be very disappointing. ||||From the outside, the Clark House is very attractive and an impressive-looking building. It is not a historic structure, but very majestic and surrounded by attractive grounds that would be most enjoyable for guests staying there during the spring or summer. This Bed and Breakfast has an "absentee owner," but is capably managed by Sandy S., who graciously welcomed us to the Clark House, gave us a quick tour of the property, and took us to our room. Unfortunately, after our initial meeting we Sandy, we did not see her again during our stay at the Clark House. ||||Our one-night stay at the Clark House was in The Regency Room, a room with two double beds. We found the room to be very plain and much more sparsely furnished than other bed and breakfasts we have stayed at. Also, the bathroom was extremely small with no counter top space for our bathroom items. A towel bar was missing and found on the floor in the closet and the hand bar in the shower was so loose that it came out when I reached for it. ||||One enters the property through an extremely small kitchen area that is not capable of preparing quality breakfasts for the large number of potential guests staying at the Clark House. As a TripAdvisor "Foodie" and a frequent guest at Bed and Breakfasts, I was disappointed to learn that a "Bacon and Eggs Breakfast" with orange juice was the only breakfast available. Most Bed and Breakfasts proudly serve a "Signature Breakfast Dish." According to Sandy, this was not the case at the Clark House and they had no "Signature Breakfast Dish."||||The reason I selected the Clark House Bed and Breakfast was because it was the highest rated bed and breakfast in Winnsboro. After staying there and paying $155.00 for a small, plainly furnished room, I was surprised at this rating. ||||The next time I visit Winnsboro, I will stay at a different bed and breakfast. I do not recommend the Clark House Bed and Breakfast to TripAdvisor Travelers. Unfortunately, because I have not stayed at other bed and breakfasts in this community, I cannot recommend any of them. I look forward to a return visit to Winnsboro and having a better guest experience at anther of the community's bed...
Read moreThe Clark House is the newest and nicest of the hotels & B&Bs in the city. Completely renovated about a year ago, this B&B used to be part of "Oklea Manor". The property has been renovated from top to bottom and is now modern and fresh without losing the charm of an older property. ||||The rooms are all very well-appointed with flat-screen TVs, WiFi, and new plumbing (lots of hot water!) but retain the elegance of the original building - nice views of the property, hardwood floors, and luxurious appointments.||||There's a full kitchen, balconies, sitting room (with even larger TV) outdoor seating, gas fireplace, BBQ grill, and jacuzzi. The fish/frog pond with waterfall adds to the experience with soft, tranquil sounds of moving water and the occasional sound of a frog jumping into the water. ||||We had a very pleasant weekend here even though we live just a few miles away - a "stay-cation" of sorts while attending a concert at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts. (The entertainer for the evening - Peter Yarrow - of "Peter Paul and Mary" was staying at the Clark House as well!) ||||The B&B is close to downtown, just a few blocks away, so dining, antiquing, and activities of Winnsboro are just minutes away without even needing your car. We opted to relax and stay on the property all day Sunday and cook for ourselves on the gas grill, then relax with friends watching a movie on TV and enjoying some wine.||||If you're going to be staying in Winnsboro - or are looking for a place to put up someone who is traveling on business - THIS is the best place to do it hands-down. The "Hostess" Sandy is very easy to work with and will accommodate whatever level of service you desire. We opted for the "do it yourself" approach and took care of ourselves. We pretty much had the run of the...
Read moreClark House is a traditional bed and breakfast with privacy. The owner does not live on the property, but the manager, Sandy, is close by if you need anything. The rooms have private bathrooms and televisions. Our room was on the first floor and there is a large covered porch at the back of the house. Another couple was also staying on the first floor, but we only saw them once and there was never a problem with noise. The grounds are beautiful and there is a large gas fireplace outside with comfortable furniture to relax on while you watch the fire. The property is set back off of the main road, so traffic noise is not an issue. Downtown Winnsboro is cute, with shops and some good local restaurants. Some of the places are byob, so check first if you want an adult beverage. Note that the convenience stores/gas stations close before midnight, so if you need something don't wait until the last minute.||||Sandy was an incredible host and made the most delicious banana bread. If we pass through Winnsboro again, we will...
