I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Paragon Boi Bai Hotel, and I must say it exceeded my expectations in several ways. Great hotel just 900m from the airport with the added bonus of a rooftop pool, where you can actually watch the planes take off and land on the runway.

Despite this, the hotel rooms are very quiet. We had a balcony room on the 5th floor. The bed was super comfy, the room was very clean and modern and the shower had great pressure and endless hot water! 🙌

All of this alone rates highly in my opinion but its the service and the lady at check in who really needs to be commended on her outstanding service.

We arrived at 8am having dropped our son at the airport who was returning to Australia and we were leaving the next day for Hong Kong.

Long story short, but our taxi driver was trying to scam us and was holding our luggage hostage in his locked boot. We agreed on a price of 43,000 at the airport (Grab was 32,000) but when we got to the hotel (just 900m from the airport) he demanded 434,000, so 10 x the agreed fair.

I went to reception and my husband stayed with the taxi. I explained to the receptionist and she advised it was a common scam they tried on tourists. I asked if we should call the police and she said they wouldn't respond. I asked what to do and she said the only way out was to try and negotiate a lower fair than the 434,000. She said she couldn't get involved, but we should try paying between 100,000 to 250,000.

I appreciate that she couldn't get involved and I went back out to negotiate. By this time the driver was now shouting at my husband as if we were trying to take advantage of him.

We were getting nowhere and the receptionist came out 5 mins later and negotiated with the taxi driver terrorist and we paid 100,000.

She was so kind and we went up onto the rooftop deck to wait for checkin. She checked us in early at midday.

The next morning when we checked out, we ordered a grab and without even asking, she came out to speak to our driver to make sure we were not scammed again.

Her kindness and caring attitude is something that will stay with us as we left Vietnam this morning and not the taxi driver who tried to scam us.

Kindly note that Paragon Hotel & Pool is in the same building as Paragon Hotel & Residence and is of 5 minutes walk away from the main road. It is advisable to travel by hotel car to the hotel and back to the airport as the airport transfer passes through highway toll. Arrangements to pick me up from the airport to the hotel are quick but must be done in advance. The staff can communicate in English very well through WhatsApp. There is no deposit to pay upfront. The room is clean but the bathtub is not separate from the toilet bowl by a wall. So, when showering, the water is scattered onto the floor despite rolling the bathtub curtain. The accessible rooftop allows me to view the beautiful countryside of Hanoi and the aircraft flying towards the runway and airport of Hanoi and I like the rooftop area. The breakfast contain fruits and salad, which are better than hotels in Thailand. It is a great improvement from previous reviews that did not praise the breakfast served. The rooftop pool is clean and families appear to jump into the pool at night. I stay here solely for aircraft-spotting and I will stay here again for aircraft-spotting purpose if I visit...
