It's always a memorable experience to play at The Australian. I've been lucky enough to have played the course a dozen times and I'm always wowed by the layout and upkeep.
When we're not going through the worst rain event in 50 years, the groundstaff consistently keep the putting surfaces in immaculate condition creating very fast but very true greens. While this requires more thinking in picking spots to approach flags from: most of the greens having ridges, mounds, tiers etc.
The course itself is always in tip-top shape. Clearly defined fairway / rough / pinestraw areas etc. The bunkers are the envy of Sydney golfs. The sand quality is irreproachable and the traps designed in such a way that you will more often than not get a flat smooth lie.
Finally the layout itself: I can't really fault it. It doesn have any average holes, all 18 are strong holes for different reasons. From reachable par 5's, to long par 4's to the very tricky stretch that is 7-8-9, the photo worthy 3rd and 4th: it has something for everyone.
I always feel like the course is "scorable", and yet it always finds a way to throw me off, to coax me into a play I'll ultimately regret. While I'm still waiting for that one good score here I'll keep coming back and enjoying every single minute of...
Read moreWas supposed to play 2 day tournament at the The Australian but Thurs the 8.3.12 was washed out. Turned up Friday. The bunkers were worst hit, all of them were compulsory GUR. The rest of the course there was no hint that it had rained, not a puddle anywhere. I know this couse is one of the better courses in Sydney, but I thought it was average and over rated. NSW and The Lakes I thought are much nicer and more interesting. The greens staff do a fantastic job immaculate fairways and greens. If you come to the course in jeans you will be asked to leave and that means even if you are a visitor watching someone play. What annoyed me the most was the fact that the men had their own entrance into the club and a tiny door way that says 'ASSOCIATES ENTRANCE' how chauvinistic, not a place I would like to be a member at. Don't think I would like to play there again, there are nicer courses to play where the people are less snobby especially the ladies on...
Read morelove this golf course. After a huge dump of rain the night before but it was not even evident when we played the day after. The staff is super-friendly. Oh, and the men's locker room! Full disclosure I did not play but went to see the Aussie open. The course was in fantastic condition given the lack of rain over the past few months. I would recommend a game if you can get on! The least impressive is a constant noise you will need to cope for the duration of the entire round, from the adjoining highway. Have a game there to check out, but don't rush - there are much better...
