We visited Caye Caulker during a birthday trip to San Pedro, Belize, and decided to try Bettyâs Go Slow Grill based on local recommendations. Unfortunately, our experience was far from what we expected.
We ordered two servings of large snapper and waited an hour, only to receive the wrong orderâa smaller fish with incorrect sides. The staff did not communicate that they had run out of large snapper, and instead of informing us, they simply brought the smaller fish without explanation. When one of our group members decided not to accept the incorrect order, the situation escalated.
The staff began making inappropriate and offensive comments about us in patois, seemingly unaware that we, too, are Caribbean. Some of these remarks were racially charged, including one employee stating that she "does not like serving Black people," while another made derogatory comments about Black travelers. This was extremely disappointing, especially given that we were supporting a local Black-owned business.
What made the situation even worse was the staffâs aggressive behavior. They became verbally hostile, got into the faces of two women in our group, and one even picked up a glass bottle in a threatening manner. This altercation forced us to leave, completely disrupting our time on the island. Shockingly, after their aggression, they called the police on us as we were heading back to the dock, wasting even more of our limited time on the island.
Overall, this was an unacceptable experience. We had an incredible time supporting local businesses throughout San Pedro and Caye Caulker, but this was the only place where we faced such hostility and poor service. If I could rate this place -100 stars, I would.
To anyone considering Bettyâs Go Slow Grillâbe mindful of where you spend your money. There are plenty of other vendors on the island who provide great food and even...

We arrived with good intentions, selected our fish directly from the grill, and patiently waited over an hour for it to be prepared. What was eventually served to us was half the size of the fish we chose, with no explanation provided. When we questioned the discrepancy, we were told our original selection was given to someone else who had been "waiting longer"âleaving us with whatever was left.
Instead of acknowledging the issue or offering a resolution, the staffâs response escalated to a deeply offensive and aggressive level. We were verbally insulted, belittled, and subjected to shockingly racist and classist remarksâfrom other Black individuals no lessâwho accused us of being "just another group of Black people looking to complain" and made derogatory comments implying we couldnât afford the food. This was not only unacceptable but profoundly disheartening.
When we refused to accept the subpar service, the situation escalated toward physical aggression. Members of the staff appeared ready to assault us, and the tension only diffused when others nearby intervened. Several neighboring vendors even warned us that this kind of behavior from the grillâs staff was not unusual and that they had a long-standing reputation for being combative and disrespectful to customers.
What was meant to be a simple, enjoyable dining experience turned into an emotionally jarring encounter. This was not just bad serviceâit was hostile, unsafe, and discriminatory.
I strongly discourage anyone from spending their time, money, or emotional energy at Bettyâs Go Slow Grill. No business should be allowed to operate with such blatant disregard for customer dignity, safety,...
Read moreOk, this place is really good. I had the shrimp kabobs with rice and beans, and plantains. I am knocking off a star for the following reasons: They didnât open until 11, despite google showing 9:00. Donât trust the hours. Basically all of the street side food places open at 11. The food took a long time, even though I was the first and only person eating. I canât imagine the wait when itâs busy. The veggies on the kabob were undercooked, some even slightly raw. The worker told me only beans and rice were available for sides. Then I asked about plantains and she said they do have them.
The plantains are a MUST! The shrimp was very good, especially with the little sweet sauce side. Iâd come by and try something else if I...
