Richmond Hill Deli - who knew what treasures lay within? While in the neighbourhood one Saturday morning, my curiosity was piqued by the outdoor pictures of culinary delights, outlined in red, declaring: "Healthy and Tasty", "Homemade with Love". Once inside, I was greeted with a panorama of products from Eastern Europe and Central Asia - including my favourites:
• Plov (Uzbek-style rice pilaf), • Samsa (Uzbek samosas with beef/lamb filling), • Khachapuri (Georgian cheese-filled "pizza"), • Pelmeni (Russian meat dumplings of various fillings - I like the turkey and lamb pelmeni), • Lülə Kebabs (minced meat kebabs from South Kavkaz), • Kefir/Ryazhenka (similar to yougurts), • various Mineral Waters, ... and the list goes on.
I had the good fortune to meet the owner, Alik, who welcomed me to his store as if to his own table. The staff at the hot food counter were warm and hospitable. To experience the world of Eastern European and Central Asian delicacies, this is the place to come to.
The only thing missing was my most favourite item of all - Chebureki (deep-fried turnovers of Crimean Tatar origin), ideally the lamb-filled variety, but the spinach/cheese ones are okay too. If Richmond Hill Deli could stock these, my joy would be complete.
As the can of Uzbek Plov said on its label: "Вкусно - нет слов" ("Tasty - no words".)

Read moreWaste of money. If you prepared to spend $200 for leftovers that smell like gone bad food that has been warmed up and refrigerated a few times ...then go for it. My family does not deserve this low quality...and I am back in the kitchen tomorrow morning. I was hoping to have a few days off from the kitchen ....but I'd rather cook myself than feed my kids and husband with undercooked fish kotlets that have expired couple of days ago, or hard as stone beef or pretty much anything from what we bought for $200. And we did buy a lot.. Very unfortunate to see this store turn into a dirty hole with smelly foods...cannot believe people are still eating that...grose. There are much more reputable deli stores and supermarkets that watch their foods' quality. Don't waste your hard earned money and do not get your families poisoned by this waste. Will not recommend...to anyone. And service...it is like nowhere else...it's like you owe them something...not a single thank you...not a smile..ohh...
Read moreHorrible treatment! I purchased a cake, the Raffaello, for my husband's birthday. The cake was absolutely appalling. My both daughters gagged when having one bite. I returned to the store to give it back and warn them that the quality of the product they sell is very low for its price. I DIDN'T even want my money back. But I was greeted by the manager with such hostility, I never expected that. He kept claiming the cake is fine and delicious WITHOUT even trying it or even looking at it. He kept trying to send me away with such disgust as if I was the one who sold him the cake. He kept insisting that I do not leave the cake here and "Take that away from here." I was never treated with so little respect anywhere. I came to talk, not to get in an argument, and I ended up trying to convince them of the obvious. Horrible customer service and products' qualities. The bread that I also bought was molded, but I didn't want to be insulted anymore, so I didn't...
