This recreational center has a bunch of cool stuff. It's not massive, but it's in a convenient spot near the Newton Bus Exchange. The Arena & Community Center, in a separate building, has an ice rink for skating lessons, public skating, and ice hockey. Separate room for karate, jumba, and other fitness classes. You can rent skating gear, and it's not pricey. There's also a daycare for toddlers. The main center has a gym, a separate weight room, a big wave pool, two water slides, kiddy pools, sauna, hot tubs, and an upstairs area for wrestling and other sports. They offer swimming lessons all year, with different schedules for summer and winter, and they even have drop-in sessions. Changing rooms are split for guys, gals, and families, and they've got lockers, too. On the main level, there are also spots for badminton, basketball, and indoor soccer practices and lessons. The staff is friendly and helpful. The downside is that it can be tough to get a spot for lessons, whether it's swimming, skating, soccer, or basketball. The City of Surrey's rule is a bummer – they open registration for three months at a time, and classes run for about a month, and they fill up really very fast. You have to book for three months without knowing if your child will pass the current level. Canceling is an option, but then you can't sign up for the next level because the next level is full. Some classes have waiting lists, but it's not guaranteed you'll get in. This messes up the whole point of taking lessons. Surrey, being a fast-growing city in Canada, should offer more classes for its people. It would just make more sense if they opened registration at the start of each month, with courses lasting a month. That way, everyone gets a fair shot. On the bright side, there are three parking lots. The first, between the rec center and the arena, gets pretty full during busy times. The second is on the west side, across the bus loop, and the third is on the east side of the Arena. There's also lots of free parking around the place and on the street behind the Arena.

I recently brought my kids here to swim and they thought the waves were great. It was pretty clean and the staff were great. Definitely, lock your belongings in the lockers on the pool deck, as there is a lot of theft here - one person had their locker broken into while we were there, resulting in their car also being stolen. My kids really enjoyed the water slides and play features.

Nice place to go to the gym and basketball court. It has also a nice hot tub and steam sauna. But, the pool is small and not fun. However, one of the staff at the front desk is not friendly at all. She suspects everyone even for no reason. Kind of discrimination.

Update oct 27, my girlfriend had just come from the community family washroom inside the rec center here and had said how much garbage was on the floor and urine all over the toilet seats so she told the staff who got cleaning staff all we saw was a middle-aged East Indian cleaning lady come with a dry mop no cleaner solution of any kind and that was the extent of the cleaning

Labor Day weekend a nice sunny day last long weekend in a while I picked up my girlfriend both in our 50s and we spent the afternoon on the little grassy spot outside the rec center entrance we had been enjoying ourselves just laying on the grass on a blanket just listening to some soft music at a low level We were not intertwined not doing nothing vulgar but just cuddling up and giving each other the odd Kiss now and then we were told by staff that we had to leave that it was inappropriate for us to be on the grass and to to be displaying affection of any kind. as someone that's been overseas twice with military I value democracy and our ability and our rights to express ourselves I found it very disrespectful of the staff to come out and tell us what they did especially by people that have very little life experience, young blond woman at the counter ,,, in a world that's plagued by violence and bad news and wars you would think that two people cuddling with the odd kiss would be something that's nice to see or acceptable in our society that we call a democracy what a sad testament to free speech and expression it was and disrespectful by the staff at Newton rec center, both of us are homeless at this time and don't have homes like most people that might be reading this.

Hi,

Today - 09/28/2023, Me and my brother were harassed and racially discriminated at the Newton recreational centre (Surrey) by the facility supervisor named Ms EMILY of the pool department, she racially discrimated us and behaved rudely. Me, and my brother have been coming here for the past 6-months but have never encountered such a behaviour from any of the staff members. The supervisor told us to get out of the pool, although, I was wearing a proper swimwear. She told me and my brother to leave the pool- for which we complied, afterwards we decided to take a hot sauna steam and informed the lifeguard on duty. This supervisor approached us aggressively in the sauna, even though we were about to leave . In the sauna, she started talking inappropriately and harassed us by saying that "you people abrupt the environment" and "I want you guys to get out of here" she also threatened us to call the police to get us trespassed, which is unbeleivable!!! for a senior staff member to say that. I feel so ashamed that we were judged just because of our skin color and appearance. Please it's my very humble request to Newton Recreation Centre that i need justice and want the centre to take strict action against such employee, who has harassed us. We went to the front desk and made a complaint, and one of the staff member (whom we don't want to disclose name) told us that she has an intense behaviour.

We will be updating all the information on here too - google reviews. We were told by the other staff member that we will be called for a meeting with the coordinator of the Newton Recreation Centre on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, . I am so concerned about other visible minorities, who come here with friends/family & and kids and how they are going to be treated.

This is so shameful!!!!.

We are waiting to discuss this matter with the appropriate higher...
