Banana Grove Market And Deli — Local services in Vancouver

I went to this market for the first time, today. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was how disgusting the shop smelled (like rotting food). The second thing was how dirty it was. It looks like they never clean, which kept me away from their deli. I decide fruit would be a safe bet, so I searched through their rotting fruit selection, and after 10 minutes found a single plum, and an orange to purchase. It was a real waste of time. I went to pay with my debit card, and was told there is a minimum purchase amount of $5.00 to pay with debit. I couldn’t find $5.00 worth of good fruit to buy, even if I spent an hour there. The cashier was rude to me after I told her I wasn’t buying anything.

I don’t recommend this market, on cleanliness alone. Take into account the rudeness, and disgusting environment, and decide for yourself....

Lovely little market that makes up for any dearth of selection with their wonderful staff. They know everyone, and are a true neighbourhood grocery catering to an multicultural area with both Chinese/Canadian clientele (nice selection of Chinese condiments, always fresh tofu, great deli counter, fresh Kale at a good price..) as well as the area's Italian roots (great prices on olives, imported cheese, pasta..) There are often some nice surprises in the produce section and I have often come upon lesser known items like chicory, persimmons, japanese cucumbers, rapini. The only area of improvement that I cold mention would be finding organic produce from time to time, and a better 'treat' section- i.e. better quality varieties of chips, ice cream etc. But the staff truly make this place special, always polite...

As a kid, it used to be Red & White. I remember how they would have these special prices on items when you collected 6 stamps or more to complete a card. A filled card would allow you to buy some said item for X cents.

The couple retired and a whole new family took over. There are quite a few changes in the store, but it still serves the local neighbourhood. A small deli is at the back as well.
