Update: I went back on a whim and had a more pleasant experience than my original experience. I ordered a deluxe dinner box. The seats now have cushions, which is a plus. The service was much better on my second trip. I've updated my rating accordingly.
Original Review: I live in the area so I wanted to try this place in case I ever have guests. Food was okay. Really the same as you would get just about anywhere. But below what you would expect for the price. But I didn't dock this as, tbh, I understand when food inflation is high and you don't want to be in a spot just a year down the road where you have to raise prices.
I ordered a dinner Box. The dynamite roll was sliced really well thinly, which to me shows some skill. But the size of the circumference of the roll was insanely huge. It is outdated -- no one wants it to be that large. We aren't living in the 2000s. You are better off just giving more pieces and rolling it smaller. The huge size full of imitation crab throws off the taste as well. Things need to have balance.
The ingredients were okay. Plain sunomono doesn't fit here -- you would expect something like ebi sunomono. I liked the sauce with the teriyaki -- I'm not a teriyaki fan but it was done well. Overall, if not for the teriyaki, I would probably give the food 3 stars.
The lemon slice was too thin with the sashimi -- it makes it hard to squeeze.
It took me forever to get the bill after I asked for it. Another server had to get it for me and also get me my miso soup as my waitress seemed to have completely forgotten. I also got sat down haphazardly with a mess of napkins and two pairs of chopsticks when I said I was dining alone. The whole feeling just seemed chaotic and impersonal.
The tea they served was bland and came in a literal coffee mug. I don't think I have experienced that in a sushi restaurant before. Really put me off before the food even came.
I liked the idea of a tray but the shape of the plates + the sizes made it a mess to dine in and move things around. The chairs were also uncomfortable. None of it was pragmatic or comfortable. I appreciate the effort in decor but details like this matter when it is this out of sorts.
Overall, I was disappointed. I hope the restaurant takes feedback and makes adjustments. It's in a great location for me. I don't like writing disappointing reviews.
Most people like me will not say anything, be polite, and simply vote with our feet. I can't see myself bringing people here but I might order takeout in the future out of convenience. Some people in the area must be fans though as there are more people inside than before the...

This restaurant opened some time ago but we only got around to trying it in the last month. There is no shortage of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver and it’s hard to find one that stands out in a vast sea of mediocre ones. Since we discovered it, we have been here 3 times in the last month. The big draw for us? Taste and value. They offer 10 percent off for take out - BONUS! The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous. The 3 or 4 item combo is spot on but last time we ordered a la carte. Very impressed with our meals and portion sizes. The tuna tataki salad is a winner. Fair size, nice char on the tuna and accompanied with a very yummy dressing. I need the recipe.
Their rolls have the perfect rice/filling ratio and a good amount of avocado. Nothing worse than when Japanese restaurants overload on rice and then cheap out on avo.
We have found our new go to Japanese restaurants!
Keep in mind that you may not be able to find parking in the small lot out front. We always opt for street parking instead which is perfectly fine...
Read moreOne of the best in this neighbourhood, Sushi Moon serves complex interpretations of British Columbian style fusion sushi at reasonable prices. My wife works around here and the staff recognise her as a regular and joke that she’s been here too often.
Together, we’ve visited a few times and even had lunch with visiting friends from overseas to give them an experience that Vancouverites are privileged to call ‘normal’.
How was the food? To start, they all look amazing with their dazzling colours and peculiar shapes. The garnishes, sauces and fried bits all add different tastes and textures to each bite. Yet somehow everything works in harmony: the sweetness, mild spiciness, crunchiness and seafood umami all explode in the mouth in a way that is pleasantly addictive.
Part of the fun is to work your way around their comically large menu and incredible selection of innovative rolls. For us who visit regularly, I am sure we will take pride once we have one day ordered every dish...
